I just checked mine and one has a 1/4 in sprout and the other 3 look like they MIGHT be sprouting! I am excited! Can you use them as cut flowers?
March 2009 in the garden.
Yardquenn, I bought my BOP about four years from Target in a one gallon pot. No blooms the first year, one bloom the second, two the third, and now 4 in the fourth. I hope to get 16 next year if it progesses exponentially. LoL.
I have never started one from seed, nor known of anyone who did, so sorry, can't help you with your question. And yes, they do make great cut flowers.
Cissy - Guess I must have looked up the zone classifications at one time to determine what I should be, but I too, have long forgotten. My memories are full of holes these days.
Soil, you can always google for the zone of your zip code, I believe :)
Soils,
I just read the instructions that the trader sent with the seeds (I forgot about them since I have had the seeds a couple of years) and she said 2 to 3 years till bloom. I guess that is when I will have 1. Maybe they will increase exponentially like yours do! LOL I am really excited that the sprouted since I had them a while before I planted them. But I did soak them 3 days. I had germination instructions from a website I use for almost all of my germination instructions. It is a great one. here is a link

Hi everyone!
Lovely flowers Dianne, this is the question!!!! will you be cutting the Birds of Paradise for an arrangement??? Love the colour of the Azealas!
Thanks for the link Yardqueen, has it sprouted?
I have at least one casualty due to the 'snow week' we had here! My rosemary has croaked, see it in front of the forsythia? It's been in for years. I will be getting a new one, they are great plants to add to arrangements for some fragrance.
Terri,
One has sprouted quite nicely and the other 3 look like something is starting to pop out!
That will be gareat to have 4 of them. I can give a couple of them away! I love 100% germination!
Congrats Yardqueen! Queen of Yards, we expect no less than 100% from you!!!
Hey Cissy, whats happening your way?
Dianne, 75 degrees?, I'll be right over LoL!
Hi, all!
Well, I did myself in today... Felt enough better to go outside... It was so pretty out! I was just going to sit on the new "patio" DH is making and well, you know. I wound up potting rooted brugs and taking lids off of the seedlings on the winter sowing pad. Wore myelf out completely. Now besides the sore ribs from coughing, I have a very sore back! But I WILL have flowers!
Terri, got sunshine for last 2 weeks, but rather cool in the low 60's. Garden looking better but not yet ready for spring! How about you?
Terri - I was wrong. It is 77 degrees as I am typing. I am definitely overdressed with a long sleeved sweater. As for the bird of paradise, I am going to wait until a few more of the blossoms open up first before cutting. I did not realize it before, but there are several buds within each stalk, and they bloom in succession.
Yardqueen - those plants better appreciate all that you are doing for them LoL.
Cissy - we are expecting a cold spell this weekend. You guys too? But tomorrow should still be on the warmish side.
Hello!
Take it easy Yardqueen ,don't over do things yet, we have a long way to go! Hope you are feeling better today.
Cissy, my garden is a mess LoL! I haven't had time to do anything out there. We have had temps in the 50's all week. Have you planted all your new plants in yet?
Dianne, stop rubbing it in LoL! I can't wait to get some heat from the sunshine, it's been a long winter!
Sally, what else is flowering in your garden?
Soils, our temp will be cool, but not too bad.
Terri, yep, all my sun bushes are planted. I still need to spruce up the shade garden...well, actually a LOT of sprucing up! LOL.
Mornin' all! And Happy First Day Of Spring!
Terri, I am better today since I had the day off yesterday. Pretty bad when a retired person needs the day off! I just went to a movie with dear SIL and to WM and and to the BS (lol Beauty shop) to get my hair trimmed...
Sis_E, I am so jealous of anyone who can plant out now! We have had warm temps day and night for a while now, but we can have a frost up to April 15th.
I think DH and I just now decided to go ahead and risk it! We won't take everything out, but we will take out the patio stuff and the hanging baskets! And the stuff for around the pond! Yea! we can cover this stuff if we do get a cold spell.
My yard looks so nice. Our warm winter makes spring even faster. My sister and her family were here yesterday from College Station for Spring Break. They came over for the morning. My sis and her daughter were in the back with me and we smelled lots of flowers and herbs! Nasturtium, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, basil, mint, sage, stock etc.
They loved my Strawflowers, how they are all dry even when you pick them. Need to get more photos, but I have been ill with kidney stones, infection from that, migraines for four days....FUN, ha.
Here today, gone tomorrow. That is exactly what happened to the apricot blossoms. We had a windy night last night, and when I went out to the driveway this morning, I was greeted by the following sight. Almsot looks like snow, there was so many petals on the ground!
Yardqueen - glad that you are feeling better.
Sally - sorry to hear about your recent health problems - your spring garden should do a good job lifting up your spirits.
We had a little bit of sprinkle this morning as I was driving by a local park that had a rose garden that is a popular wedding site - lo and behold, there was a wedding going on, and the few people that was out there were huddled under umbrellas. It is pretty risky planning an outdoor wedding even if spring has already sprung!
I had my wedding at my parents' home. It rained, but stopped just in time. That is good luck! That is the only place I would want to get married. In a lovely garden. I do go to church, but being outside with flowers is just perfect.
Hi everyone!
Sally, I've heard kidney stones are very painful, and you've had migranes too. Sorry sweetie, get well soon!
Nice you had your family to visit, I bet they love your garden! Great to see nasturtium so early on, it's lovely!
Yardqueen, LOL! glad you enjoyed your 'day off', good to have a bit of pampering with a new doo!
Good luck with the planting.... live dangerously!!!
Dianne, your apricot in bloom is absolutey STUNNING! oh no, here today gone tomorrow LOL!
Hiya Cis!
It's Haighr's Birthday today! We are having a Birthday party for her, everyone is invited to the cafe!
Oooohhhh Terri! I more than made up for it today! Worked so hard so long, but we got a lot done. DH and I are both pooped! backs hurting, legs hurting, even my hands hurt. And I can still smell potting soil even though I had a nice hot shower and went out for fish and shrimp for dinner. And we will continue this tomorrow after church. And this is just plants that are in pots that were in the greenhouse all winter. They all looked GREAT though! Had to do cleaning up on some but they still looked great. Repotted quite a few. We worked all day and this is just patio plants, around the pond plants, and hanging baskets...
This is not flowers for bouquets plants... A lot of them bloom, but not for bouquets. We haven't even started that yet! They are still out in the pad and in the greenhouse! Will it never end???
So that is where that confetti came from. Sorry they didn't last longer as that is a spectacular showing. Yardqueen would love to see more of your gardens, sounds like you really put a lot of work into it.
Yardqueen this is what you have been waiting for all winter, enjoy!! Take your time...
Well, what I said would happen is happening! We are going to have a freeze tonight! We had to put everything back and cover some other things... I am glad I did't yield to the temptation to plant my seedling out in the beds...
I hope it doesn't harm the new growth on mt hydrangeas.
Hi Yardqueen, Sounds like you with be busy taking things in and out LOL! Hope no real damage is done and you manage to protect all your babies.
Well, now they say it will be 34. Everthing is in or covered, unless they blow off. The wind is very strong today!
Hope you manage fine there yardqueen, wouldn't want to lose a single thing I have done that in the past and learned the hard way, now I start things inside and still tend to begin too early and now most of them are quite leggy now. Good luck with your temps.
Everything is fine. It only got to 38 and everthing was covered or inside. We started bringing it all out again today. Hope we don't have another one. But we are trying to get ready for a BD party in 2 weeks which will be in our "yard" ...
Yardqueen - hope you have some nice sunny days in the next two weeks so that the plants will be up and blooming for your party.
OK - Terri - Since you asked, I braved the wind today and went out and got some March garden photos before April sneaks up on us -
first up - cherry tree is blooming. Lots of places are having their cherry blossom festivals either now or very soon
Close up of the blossoms. This is one of the last of my non-citrus trees to bloom, but it is the first to have ripe fruits. We normally start picking cherries around mid-May. This is the Stella variety which is self-pollinating. My second garden goal is to have fresh fruit year around - I almost reached that goal (with some help from my mom's orange tree filling in the gap)
Those ranunculus are stunning. I bought some for 2 years in a row and they croaked w/n a few days in the house. And the birds of paradise are one of my favorites. I am just gonna have to move to the tropics!
Hi Dianne, Thanks for your garden pictures in March!
Your garden looks great. The cherry blossom looks lovely. I bet the cherries will be delicious too!
Rhodo's don't grow in my garden,it's nice to see yours, lovely colour.
The ranunculus look strong and healthy, what is that next to them, Peony?
Looking forward to your BOP'S arrangement... L
Yardqueen, who's Birthday? Nice to have a garden party to plan!
Terri,
My granddaughter. She will be 10.
Dianne,
Thanks for the well-wishes re the party and blooming flowers! It was cloudy all day today, though, and is supposed to rain tonight. Rain is a good thing! I am sure SOMETHING will be blooming. If not I will put fake flowers in my plants... LOL
