March 2009 in the garden.

london England, United Kingdom

Hi Yardqueen, I had a look at your seedlings! Wow everything has come up and they all look really healthy. Have you planted any in the garden yet or is it too early?

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

I am struggling with that very thing! Right now it is almost like summer. But we always have a frost right before Easter after things have budded out. So I am debating whether to chance it or not!

london England, United Kingdom

Ummm!! I think I would be inclined to keep them in! It would be such a shame to lose them to frost after all your hard work. On the other hand, you do seem to have 100's of seedlings so maybe you could risk 30 or so!! Not much help am I ? LoL!

Now you know why I am struggling with this... It is hard because it is so warm now I just can't imagine a frost now. But most people say it is going to happen!

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Sally, Azaleas don't grow in my garden, so Thanks for sharing yours, pretty colour!
I love Straw flowers!! I must remember to sow some of those, lovely. It must be warm where you are?

Yardqueen, Have you been tempted yet? LoL
Soilsandup (Dianne) has gone to visit a friend for a few days! You will have to wait for the relpy on the Daphnes.

Yes Terri, I garden all year. We just had a cool front, but not that cool. WInter is pretty warm, favorite time of year. Summer is HOT.

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Terri,

It is a good thing I didn't! It was 37 last night and the night before! After having to put the air conditioning on ealier. I knew it was coming. Still don't kow if this is the last one! Bbbrrrr!

london England, United Kingdom

Hi Yardqueen!
Phew, better wait a bit longer then! It was quite nice here today 54, but I wouldn't risk putting anything tender out yet though!

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi yardqueen - I have never tried to root the Daphne, so can't answer you there. I do like the plant very much, and was almost tempted to buy another one a few weeks ago. One of these days, the plant will get big enough that I may take the chance and try rooting a branch and let you know.

Sallysbloom - how lucky you are to be able to grow orchids outside. The only ones that survive for me outdoors here are the cymbidiums.

We grow our orchids in our sunroom, and two hanging ones outside in trees.

london England, United Kingdom

Sally, Have you tried drying your straw flowers?

elle, I would like to live somewhere warmer too!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Well looks like everyone is springing out with a bang. NEver heard of strawflower, sure is one I'll try to find seed for around here as it really captured my fancy.
Yardqueen that is quite the GH you have there and bursting with color already.
Dianne that nectarine is gorgeous, I would love to have something like that here. Only tree blooms we have are the dogwoods. I have lots of quince buds but will be a bit before they show.
Terri you got daffs blooming already? That is fab.
Those hangin orchids are stunning. What a display of all these fine spring blooms.
Please allow me to introduce Mr. Harry Lauder, we don't get along when he gets his leaves but right now he is my favorite!

Terri, I need to keep the strawflowers. I have kept a few, but that is a good idea. I don't keep dry flowers usually, but these really do dry well. The Strawflower plants are growing bigger with lots of flowers.

london England, United Kingdom

Candee, your Harry Lauder is magnificent! What a beautiful sight. Glad you got in the garden to start taking your spring pictures! Will you be making an arrangement with it?

Cute Kid elle!
Hiya Cissy, been getting any dirt under your finger nails yet? LOL!

Sally, Those straw flowers are great dried and seem to keep their colours for a long time.

Sorry I haven't got into the garden yet, I'm enjoying all your garden pics. Thanks!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Elle look at all your kids, you sure have some busy goats on your farm. Perhaps you should put your bunnies in there with them so they get the idea!
Thanks Terri, yes it was nice to get out and take some pics.
Here are my helleborus, not quite bloomin yet.

Yes, Terri, I have! Another member here on the forum, Sunnyg, gave me some plants! She gave me two Bougainvillea trees, 1 HUGE Calla Lily plant, 2 huge ginger plants, a couple of bulbs and some impatient seedlings. Planted some bushes! That's it for now!

Cis

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Wow Cis sounds like you got a lot of prizes there! Can't wait for you to show them off, hint, hint.

Nice to see your Hellebore about to open there Candee, won't be long now! Lovely rich colour by the look of it. Thanks.

You are beating me to Spring there Terri, looks like you are really popping out with the blooms.

Don't get too excited, thats it!!! The first tiny forget me not!

I've got lots of clearing up to do, but it's great seeing the garden coming back.

Terri - that is one nice looking forsythia! Can't wait for mines to be that full. Snowdrops are another plant that I hope to start growing one of these days too.

Candee - that Harry Lauder must provide a lot of interesting branches for your arrangements. I had a curly willow that I had to cut down after two years because it got too big and I had no room for it. I only have about 2 branches left that I saved through the years.

Cissy - what kind of ginger plants did you get? That is a nice assortment of plants. I am not exactly sure what the difference between zone 9a (mines) and zone 9b (yours) is, but I imagine our growing environment are very similar.

Elle - those baby goats are the cutest. Are they a lot of work, or does the mommy goat takes care of them without any help?

Elle and Terri - you can come out to sunny California to visit any time. We are expecting 75 degrees this coming week!

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

It got a little cold this afternoon, but I did managed to get some yard work done, and took some photos. I have been waiting for a long time for the bird of paradise to bloom. And it finally did!!

Soils, I don't know the variety of Ginger. Guess I'll find out! LOL. As far as zone goes, I have no idea. Aren't I just a wealth of information? heehee

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Soils,

How old is your BOP? Did you start it from seed? I have planted some seeds and waiting for germination now... I just wondered if I would still be alive when it finally blooms... I am 60 now,,, LOL
