Mulching with Pine Needles

Symsonia, KY(Zone 6b)

i have a good amount of pine needles, would it be ok to use them around certain plants/flowers? i'm thinking that pine is acidic and i could use this to balance the pH of my slightly alkaline soil?
thanks for any suggestions- Vicki

I use pine straw to mulch my flowerbeds and it actually holds down weeds better than the chipped wood mulch you can buy (and the pine straw is free!) My cats don't like it quite as well as the bark chips either. I haven't noticed any problems with my shrubs and flowers--they are all very healthy and bloom profusely.

We use pine needles as a winter mulch on iris beds. Remove it with a leaf blower in early April

I guess y'all wouldn't need mulch up there in the summertime. I especially need it then to try to keep all my flowers from getting too dry. Without mulch, I'd have to water every day!

Pine needles are not heavy however. You want to avoid heavy mulch which would cause rhizomes to rot.

thank you for your replies, ladies:) like Nature Lover, i do mulch during the summer, our summers are usually hot and dry. i used the pine straw around my azaleas and a few perennials. was a lovely day to be outside, never hurts to get a jump on the gardening!
