So...I just discovered this forum, and saw the thread, Chocolate Basil! OMG, where has chocolate basil been, all of my gardening life? Then I read. I have coffee. And laugh, and laugh.

Nada. I think I will just take a regular basil leaf and paint it with melted chocolate and call it good.

Ok...so if someone managed to cross a mint to get "chocolate mint' can it not be done with Basil? ( this from a person who doesn't touch hybridizing with a 20 ft. Q-tip.)

I think you could flavor chocolate with basil essential oil, but that'd be basil chocolate.

The other CB lovers on this thread will go into mourning and start a political party called the Basil Savers Party or the BS Party.A movement that will take over the world, All plants will be destroyed and only chocolate basil will be allowed to grow. After they genetically transform a cocoa plant and a basil plant into chocolate basil.

When it comes to Chocolate Basil, well, yes we are.....and since we are loyal followers of the Quest to find the "Holy Grail of Basil's", anyone who get's in our way is in serious trouble.!!!!

I was watching Iron Chef America a couple of days ago and the secret ingredient was Basil. I was busy on the computer and I heard the host say that one of the chefs was using chocolate basil. I almost got whip lash turning to the TV, but they had gone to commercial and even though I paid attention for the rest of the show, I did not hear them say it again.

ooh, ooh, what day? Maybe could email them and find out more info, but it would help to have more specifics.

I'll have to check into seeing if I can email them about it. I know the basil I saw just as they went to commercial was dark colored. I'll do some checking.

Hate to be a nay Sayer but chocolate and Basil combos are really popular in chef circles these days but unfortunately it refers to a combination of the two and not Chocolate Basil per se.
I'll ask Bigfoot if he will allow me to send them the real thing.

The nursery mentioned in the Herb Companion letter to the editor wrote to me saying that last year they received chocolate basil "by accident". They are hoping to get more this year. They will let me know if they do get it. The bidding starts now!

Now, the nursery is saying chocolate basil is an herbal (unrban) myth! Dang it! And I was looking forward to Vickie's quilts.

I saw this thread last year, have been wondering what the outcome was since the thread picked up again. LOL!! Curiosity killed the cat, literally and figuratively speaking.

It seems that it is a chef's misquote, which was translated by gardeners, to mean it was a special basil cultivar. I never saw a mention of it anywhere before until this thread. I am a past subscriber of The Herb Companion.

I have soooo given up on the CB obsession. However I lurk in from time to time to see what's up and it gets me on the CB bandwagon again. Hopes are dashed. Just make a very big announcement when it really really arrives at a spot we can purchase it. I'm going to try very hard to put it waaay in the back of my mind!
