Chocolate Basil? Still searching...

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

There are only 3 things money cannot buy--True love, True friends and-------
Chocolate Basil

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

HA ! I live in an "obscure" little town, on 11 acres that back up to "Tiger Bay Wildlife" Management area. Lots of Deer, Turkey( I think one of them is named "Vort" ;-) ....anyway, I'm used to "wildlife" and "Bigfoot" the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy ( who holds a revereded spot in my garden, don't sceer me. ( I 'm one tough girl) ...and I WILL be in Mississipi in March, shooting Arrows from Horseback In March, and I WILL be on the hunt for Chocolate Basil. And Bigfoot and his co-horts don't scare me or my horse or my ole beat up Dodge truck. DODGE TRUCKS EAT BIG FOOT FOR DINNER !
But are very kind to Chocolate Basil ........knowing how much I want to find the elusive herb.
Alas, the ultimate goal is to find the Chocolate Basil and spread it's wonderful aroma to all in the land.....I intend to share.

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Just jumping her to ask. " What in the world would you do with Chocolate Basil"? Just the glory of having it? Just wondering? Youz now have me on the hunt also. But why?

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Geeeze--mjs has stooped to the level of naming a Turkey after me. If I were as sensitive as my buddies I would be upset.

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Big Foot just recovered and I tried my best to restrain him--but he ate a horse and an old Dodge pick up before he calmed down.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

OH me OH my! You did'nt see any traces of a florida person left around. Did you? This might be serious!!! There might even be a piece of pink flamingo on the ground somewhere.
Dillensnana, Chocolate basil is like UFO,s and Intellegent life in the universe. There are sightings and rumours and wonder and hope but every clue seems to evaporate in an illusion of imaginary yearning of a perfect herb with a delicate taste of a melting chocolate bar fused with the mildly astringent taste of a juicy tender basil leaf.

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

LOL--not even a pink Flamingo survived his wrath

Hemet, CA(Zone 9b)

Youz guys got me hooked on the search for the illusive Choc. Basil. I hope to be the winner and send it to our dear Jill. She so deserves it for being such a help and joy to all of us.

Sylvia

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Now Silvia, Jill is sweet but VORTREKER is such a bugger. A person after my own heart.Thats the way i gotta go.Anyway Texas is a lot closer to me than Florida in case i need time to run from anyone.
Silvia, You do realize that you and Jill are on either end of the continent and we are in the middle close together.LOL

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Anyone heard from poor mjsponies since Bigfoot ate her Dodge?------:)

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

If i were you VORTREKER, I'd put a special guard out in your basil patch. She's probably camped out there somewhere.

Seriously, I hope she's ok.

da dum, da dam, da dum, Leaving for Mississippi on the 13th, have to be there for a week. Striking distance....

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

We ain't scared------ :)

Carmel, IN(Zone 5b)

Has anyone seen the article in the March issue of The Herb Companion regarding chocolate basil? As it discusses the search for this elusive plant, it even mentions DG.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Ahhhh, but it put's us no closer. They aren't asking the right person, Course...Vort and Bigfoot, they are hiding it in Vort's Herb Garden, IN Tx, so, who's game for a raid? WE know he has it, he's just keeping it all for himself.....

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Hee-hee-hee

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

While sitting around last night nursing my knee, being bored..I was thinking...I love chocolate, I really like mint..mint julips, mint in my tea....but...I don't really care for them together...Like mint chocolate chip cookies..or those mint chocolate candies..
What if we do find Chocolate Basil, and it doesn't taste GOOD together ! GASP !!!!!!!!

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

No worry mates.
It taste great-I'll vouch for it

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

course you won't have any left before long...........

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Big foot is catching up on his sleep-I told him your knee is bunged up and the patch is safe for now--I'll keep an eye out for cando1 for him

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

while Big Foot is sleeping, I'm scheming....and the knee is is doing better.....

Central, VA(Zone 7b)

Ahhh, Can spring be far behind now that the annual chocolate basil fantasy has gotten into full swing. Don't you think it will be like tulipmania all over again. DG'ers will be mortgaging their homes to purchase a single plant. Let me know when you find it, will you! Mjsponies, I didn't hear about the bigfoot incident, but I'm glad your knee is mending.

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Pam--how much is your house worth?
We just might make a deal.
I'm also working on a chocolate flavored Tulip.
Pay no attention to the squinty eyes, twisting of the mustache and the evil grin.
Those are just family traits of mine.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

I don't care how much Chocolate basil is worth,I'm not giving up my house on the mountain. But on second thought Where better to hide a crop of chocolate basil as long as it does'nt look like marijunna. Sherriff does frequent fly-bys looking for the #1 crop in the Ozarks.
Dear vortreker-Tulips are highly poisonous. How about chocolate daylillies?
I have lots of daylillies. They'd blend right in.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

on that note, I just ordered Nicotiana "Chocolate Smoke" and Salvia discolor, which has deep purple almost black blooms ( I have a hopeless Salvia addiction, if you look at my Garden Journal)
Now...if we could just pry that Chocolate Basil from................

Central, VA(Zone 7b)

VORTRECKER, My house was worth more last year before the real estate market flopped, so you'd have been making a better deal then. Chocolate tulips sound yummy. I don't have a single tulip because of the crazy deer. I looked out my back window the other day and there were seven of them. They were so close to the house we startled one another. We need a dog!

mjsponies, I've never seen chocolate smoke nicotiana. Is the scent simply fabulous? I'd love to have the big tall white nicotiana, or any for that matter, in my garden. Maybe this will be the year. Salvia, I just love it, especially since it is such a hummingbird magnet. The other thing that did well for me was agastaches and I ordered some from High Country Gardens around Christmas. I've forgotten what I ordered...lol.

cando, A mountain garden sounds so lovely. Do you have different levels?

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Pamgarden,
This will be the first time I've grown the " Chocolate Smoke" Nicotinia- supposed to be much better than "Hot Chocolate"..I'm going to mix with the White. I grow alot of Agastache too, you brush the foliage and most smell wonderfull! Makes weeding a bit more pleasant task. Yes, Salvia's are Hummer magnet's. I have lots of different "Tropical Sages" especially near my back and front porch. I can sit and have my coffee and watch for Hummers early in the morning. They are so entertaining. The Knee is doing better, and practice went well, so it's off and running.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

I'm on top of the mountain. Our house and garden is on flat ground but it gets steep the back part of our land. I've made small terraces for my flower beds but have changed to containers recently so my beds are growing up.
The deer never bother my tulips but get into my daylillys every now and then.Thats when i invite everyone i know up to go fall deer hunting.
I love the Salvias too. A friend gave me a Pineapple sage last year and i forgot about it. I came home one day and saw this beautiful red flower blooming and could'nt imagine what or where.LOL
Good luck on your archery.

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Dear Diary,

Today about noon Spring officially started. About 5pm it started snowing for the 7th time this year. All of my relatives, and one is 88 y/o, state this has never happened in this area in their lifetime. Oh well--
Al Gore tells me this is because of global warming. I am really confused. Wish I could ask Forest Gump to explain this to me.
Bigfoot ran off into the woods to warm up and abandoned his post leaving me to guard the Chocolate Basil by myself.
Not sure I can fend off mjs, cando, pam and other evil beings by myself.
Moral------never ever-ever count on a Sasquatch.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Snowing here too. Since sasquatch is gone. I'll fight my way thru the blizzard for some good ole CB. See ya in a couple of hours.
Never fear! I'll leave you a sprig or two.

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Sasquatch just ran up to me and excitedly grunted something. Sounded a bit like "cando alert"

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

LOL!!!!!

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Cando ! I think I just missed you .....make a dash down to Tx, from Mississippi, ran over a tall hairy thing that looked like Bigfoot while rummaging thru Vort's garden looking for the Chocolate Basil, nothing but alot of suspicious footprints and empty spots in the garden. Their were plant markers, that had "top secret" on them.....but no plants !

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Did that tall hairy thing have an evil smirk on his face?

Ok Bigfoot--you can bring the CB back from your hiding place. We survived another raid by the evil beings.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Vortreker, Yes indeedy, I raided your field to put the chocolate basil in protective custudy. My spies told me mjs was planning a raid and decided the CB was safer on a steep cliffsided mountain in the Ozarks.
Big Foot did'nt have a big lopsided evil smirk. That was ME!!! However Big Foot says he loves the ozark mountains and is already making advances to the local sleepy lady bear. They may have the chocolate basil stashed in her cave till warm weather.

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

LOL--Never trust a Sasquatch

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Dear Doc,
I am patiently waiting in the Ozarks now and I don't see no lady bear yet (: I think cando might be less trustworthy than I am.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Pleease don't worry about Big Foot. He's pulling your leg.He and lady bear were spotted by the sherrif in a near by marijuana patch.
He will probably return to you in awhile with a very special batch of CB.(This you can have) I'm getting plain CB.
BTW He will be followed by lady bear and a bunch of little bear foots.
Another BTW He's a handsome dude. HUH?

Middleburgh, NY

Herb Companion had a letter to the editor responding to Jim Long's article that there was no chocolate basil. She said she got some from a nursery in Ohio. I have sent an email...

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

herbalbetty is hereby declared the Betsy Ross of the CB search.
Here is her flag:
