2 Newbie Vegetable Grower Questions

Tampa, FL

I'm a new gardener. So far most of my vegetables seem to be doing fine except my eggplant and squash. (1) The eggplants are large and have dozens of flowers but none will bear fruit. Is it because I have no bees? (2) Can anyone tell me why my squash stems all seem to be splitting. I have zucchini, crookneck and Seminole pumpkin and they are all splitting. Some are in the ground and some in containers and they both are doing the same thing so I don't think it is pests. Could it be over-watering? Is the weather too cold still? I am in West Central FL. Thank you.

Eggplant is self pollinating, so bees or the absence therof would not be the problem. Probably just need more time. daylight and maybe warmer temps. Don't know warm Tampa is this time of year. No idea on squash vine spliting. Are these longitudinal splits? Any chance that you have SVB? It is not unusual to have a split or two where a plant is blown by wind, but it should be rare.

Yes. they are longitudinal splits.
SVB-squash vine borer? It is hard for me to believe the one in the container would have been attacked but maybe. I have been treating them with my organic anti-caterpillar stuff. Is there something else I should be using?
