amaryllis no bloom

Batavia, OH(Zone 6a)

I planted the bulb the first of January. The leaves are now 24 inches tall but no bloom stalk in sight. Will I get a bloom on this plant.

hmm ... your Amaryllis is growing leaves, which usually happen after the bloom stalk. You could try forcing it to bloom by removing all the leaves and place the pot in a window that gets lots of sun! Water sparingly. In five or six weeks you should see the beginnings of the bloom stalk.

I have a few with foliage that I haven't cut back and one that I did cut back has a bloom stalk about to open. My plants out on the pool deck are all covered because we are having a few real cold nights but I was able to hunt and find a couple to pull out to show you.

How much light does it typically get? The way it's shown in your picture makes me suspect it's probably too dark and that's probably why it didn't send up a bloom stalk before the leaves. I'm not sure you should cut the leaves off at this point though--the way bulbs work is that they grow foliage and the foliage does photosynthesis and sends energy back to the bulb. Once the bulb has all the energy it needs, then the foliage dies back (at which point it is fine to remove it). But since your foliage most likely hasn't been there for very long, it probably hasn't given the bulb enough energy yet, so if you cut off the leaves now that could be problematic. But I've never grown these, so maybe they work differently than other bulbs and cutting the foliage off doesn't matter.

The one of mine that was in bud, I brought inside the house a few days ago to keep a watch on it. It began opening yesterday, this morning a bit more, and now it's almost completely opened. This is Amaryllis 'Aphrodite'.

Amalie, you are welcome. Amaryllis are wonderful plants. I gave my sister a few at Christmas and she and her family fell in love with the beautiful blooms! Check your local Wal-Mart garden centers, usually when they begin getting spring seeds and bulbs in, they have Amaryllis bulbs. They usually run @$4-$5 per package.
