Container vegetable gardening reliable companies to buy from

Olean, NY

Does anyone have a reliable company to purchase container vegetable plants from? I have a large front porch, but no yard and would really like to grow some vegetable this year. I have seen ads for tomato trees and such and wondered if any of them actually are good? I purchased from a company last year 3 giant blueberry plants and not one of them grew. I know nothing about growing and am just starting so if you have any tips, that would be well appreciated!

Your best bet before ordering anything is to check out the Garden Watchdog here at Dave's Garden.

For ordering tomato plants online, http://www.selectedplants.com/ is great.

As for gardening advice, there are a million books. Some other folks probably have better recommendations on that.

Hi barkatt ~~ Here is a handy website with some basic info on container gardening..... page two of the site gives container sizes for most vegetable plants. There is a wealth of info out there but this is one good place to start.

Good luck!

Last year I was late getting started and got lazy about preparing my garden area so I grew a bunch of stuff in containers. Generally most stuff will grow in a container, though typically smaller and less productive than in they would in the garden. You can look for seeds (or plants) suited for container growing... they usually specify "does well in containers". I managed to grow corn, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, various herbs, and even managed to get 4 melons off a trellised sugar baby plant grown in a five gallon bucket.

That's encouraging!
