Oh, my gosh! I don't know how I missed this thread until today! Oh, great, great photos!

March Hoyas
Carol, beautiful flowers & photos.
Well, I have nothing exciting to share, but my H. lacunosa finally opened its flowers last night for a first blooming for me.....I LOVE it....As promised by everyone here, the scent is absolutely fabulous---I get the carnations/hyacinth mentioned by other DG'rs, but also detect a distinct undertone of night blooming jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum).....yummmmmm....I actually brought the blooming pot into the living room with me while I watched TV and sniffed it during commercials....Also, my H. nummulariodes is in bud again---for some reason I thought it only bloomed in the fall, but mine has been going on and off all winter....also love the looks and scent on that one, plus the leaves are so nice to pet :) These are officially two of my favorite hoyas....until something else blooms and becomes my new favorite :D.....
I have no camera and very few computer skills, but I LOVE the photos on these threads, so please keep photos of your blooming hoyas coming...
Shelley
Congratulations Shelley! Getting lacunosa to bloom in a dry environment is not the easiest thing to do.
Doug
Thanks Doug---It actually budded and blasted twice over the winter--grrrrrr---but somehow plants seem to "know" when it's Spring....even when they're inside behind a closed window....it can't be just longer daylength....I dunno...it's a mystery...now we'll see if my bella will participate in the mystery :)....it's budded up (again) but hasn't produced any flowers since its big Fall display....
SR
Congrats and good luck!! (I hate when they blast!)
Y'all, we need to start a thread for "My favorite Hoyas".
I loved Shelley telling how she loves hers that are budding
and blooming right now.
Very cute! I don't think they open much more than that but I may be wrong. I'm really liking these hoya cousins!
Which one is that Eileen? That foliage is nice ... and I see a little peduncle with buds, so looks like you will have blooms soon!
same one, Lin. Discidia ovata.
Well, duh ... my blonde is showing again! ^_^
And, I agree ... it's a lovely plant, even without flowers!
I'm liking the dischidias more and more! Great pictures, Eileen!
I agree! Nice picture Eileen.
Doug
Wow! Great photo's Kelly, especially the close up of buotii ... really nice!
Boojum...Great photo and don't you think it's a really wonderful hoya!!!! I feel so badly for folks who have no luck with it...I just love it!!!!
OMG, people have bad luck with it? It's one of the few consistent hoyas for me.
Boojum: That's a lovely lacunosa! Great close up of the blooms!
I have much better luck with the variegated one than I do the solid green for some reason. H. lacunosa is one of my favorite's for fragrance. I had four or more really pretty ones until I put them in too much sun and they fried, then one got left out on the deck, (under cover) and we had a couple of nights in the mid 20º range so it wasn't a happy hoya and is nearly dead. I still have hopes for it though, as well as the sun burned ones, they are tough little plants! Two of my hanging baskets are somewhat recuperating from the sun burn so only time will tell if they get back to their original beauty.
I sunburned a bunch in east light last year, too. Now I know better.
Kelly---your buotii and praetorii are both stunning....scent on either of them???
SR
Kelly, both the buotti and praetorii are georgeous. Have to get some.
boojum, your speckled lacunosa is so cute. I have one bloom on mine. It was out in the sun and the leaves got bleached. Now I've moved it to inside and it's starting to get darker green. I love the fragrance, but DH hates it. I have it dining room where he can't see it or smell it. So far, so good. ^_^
Carol, personally I think the best part of dischida is the leaves. I was a little disappointed in the flower of ovata. I didn't realize that they were so tiny. I almost missed them. They were hidden under a leaf.
Buotii smells a bit like hyacinths. Haven't decided about praetorii - will check again this evening as more blooms opened this morning!
I LOVE the buotii! The flowers are pretty big in comparison to any other hoya I've had bloom (which really isn't that many....)! Don't know what I think about praetorii. It's just okay.
Boojum- great picture! I love lacunosa - it's so reliable and fragrant and the flowers are dear!
Kelly
Funny, I love lacunosa's scent and my DBF hates it. He calls it "cloying." What is it about these guys?
HYACINTHS ????? That's it, I can't stand it...even if I actually get my cutting, and if it survives the trip from Australia, and if it roots for me....I'm still looking at several years to flowers....I think I may have to plunk down the $40 odd with Asiatica and just order a plant....
And my theory is that women have a more refined sense of smell (and a lot of other things) than men....men just had to visually locate an animal, whop it over the head, and drag it back to the cave...women had to clean it and cook it and along the way sniff it to decide if it had been out in the sun a few days too long and could possibly kill everyone...Hoya lacunosa smells WONDERFUL and couldn't possibly kill anyone :D...
SR
Christine---no, no, you misread my post....(or I wrote it unclearly, always possible)....I LOVE that it smells like hyacinths...what I can't stand is that I'll have to wait so long for flowers IF I get that cutting from DL....I love the way the bloom looks, and now I love the way it smells!!!! But I know everyone reacts differently to scents... my sister thinks hyacinths and paperwhite narcissis have a distinct undertone of cat pee and can't stand them....and I'm not a big fan of jasmine (except at a distance) and hated the very strong scent of my hoya cummingiana....other people were talking about what a wonderful spicey aroma it had, and all I could smell was 3 in 1 oil (really!) and dried carrots, with just a HINT of burning asphalt....yechhhh...
SR
Shelly, I also love lacunosa and hyacynth and lilac fragrance, but I have a H. australis that when it blooms I'd love to bring it in but the fragrance smells just like horse urine. Last year it was in bloom during a cold spell and I hung it in the guest bathroom from the shower rod afraid it would loose its blooms. I had to keep the door closed, the smell was so bad. ^_^
cv. Iris Marie also smells, to me, like lilacs....
Shelly, your comments have me rolling on the floor laughing! I'm also laughing at all of these"scent" descriptions. Isn't it funny how our noses smell differently? When my H. australis bloomed for the first time last summer I thought it was the most wonderful scent ever!
My Iris Marie hasn't bloomed yet and I really hope it smells like lilac's to my nose! I love lilacs but they don't grow in my zone. My cummingiana hasn't bloomed yet either ... I sure hope it doesn't smell like 3 in 1 oil, dried carrots and burning asphalt! Whoa ... what a combination! If I ever get blooms on either of those, I will definitely report back as to what my nose detects, LOL.
It would be a hoot to have a spreadsheet with lists of hoya's and everyone's description of how each smells to their nose! ^_^
I agree Lin...it is quite individual...sort of like color perception!!!
I have teased my DH for years about his perception of color. Anything, peach, apricot, or coral, to him, is Orange! Anything red, cranberry, burgundy, or maroon, is Red! Colors of lilac, lavender (or shades thereof) are all Purple to his eyes! ^_^
