We came from February. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/948586/
My lacunosa has been in bloom so that woke me up and I'm back to the forum. This is an Exotic Angel plant from HD that's about 2 years old. It hasn't grown a ton but it's happy and blooms more than any other I have.
March Hoyas
Oh, and here is one for an ID. I found this at the HS I work at. It had about 5 more leaves but the greenhouse froze one night and the other leaves were toast and since it was trying to come back I thought I'd play doctor. Anyone recognize any possibilities?? It has been very heavily watered since the freeze. I thought I should let it dry out for a while. Any input on that?
Oh.......I just took a picture of the foliage for you but we won't need it now. I didn't even know that Angel Exotica grew the variegated one!
Boojum...really hard to tell with those leaves. Could be one of the NOID pubicalyx ones...HSI-037 which could be the original pubicalyx...very difficult to bloom. Or it could be one of about 6 that look similar. Patience....
None of the leaves had silver markings like my publicalyxes. Does the original have these marks? You could send me a list of the 6 possibles to limit my unruly imagination!
Hmmmm Now you are going to make me work... Could be one of the H. carnosas, H. meliflua, HSI 037, .... specifically that is all I can come up with without spending hours simply guessing. But a rooted cutting with 2 leaves could be just about anything.... Often leaves change with environment...I would not even venture a guess. Is the sap white or clear? That could narrow it down but not much. Sorry.
I don't think it is a meliflua at all..........mine is totally different in leaf size and shape........(LOL because I know very little)
thanks, that helps!!
Nothing helps with hoyas as far as id goes........it is hard! I even bought that book that the people from Sweden put out and I stay confused. (Plus it is always in a state of flux.....the naming that is)
Well, if all goes well they'll be a flower someday.... (fingers xed).
That is the fun! Waiting for blooms, combined with the foliage is the only time you maybe figure out what you have! I had one that bloomed these giant blooms......in dark red...........I couldn't believe it and then I found out I had a really good Hoya Imperialis. Now I use the first one to propagate and the second one to bloom......smiling.
The problem with leaves is that for me, a hoya might have leaves 2" x 3" and for my neighbour they might be 3" x 6"....or smaller...and it depends on their age, light, nurishment, temperature.... See what I mean.
Ah. Well the reason I grabbed this plant was because the leaves were longer and thinner than any I have...and it's rooted!
Is the sap milky or is it clear???
The answer to this question is not as idle as it sounds... If the sap is clear, it would link it to a group of hoyas: H. carnosa, pubicalyx...and all of their counsins with clear sap. This is not such a wide group...would narrow down the search for your id.
Where did yu get the cutting?...was there a name with it?
Your question isn't idle...it's sappy! Sorry, can't make it as funny as it is in my head. I got it from my high school landscape program. It has a tag that reads "hoya plant." It's a miracle it's alive since the heat went out in the greenhouse when it was about 10 degrees out. The alarm system didn't work. The baby pachysandras seemed to be fine in those temps but almost all the other plants died or almost died. BTW, I just tried cutting the stems but they are bone dry to those leaves. There are 2 tiny leaves sprouting. The leaves are similar to my flavascens but not as long.
Sorry...I seem to be wordy these days... why don't you start another thread re: March blooms as I have hogged this one with questions.
I think we can move on, on this thread. We've both hit a dead end on my ID. (never too many quests!)
Beeeuutiful Paula!
Oooh, Paula ... your house is gonna smell so good!
Congratulations Paula, the color is beautiful-- mine blooms all yellow, I guess has to do with the amount of light.
Yes...the more light the redder the leaves and pinker the flowers...
The leaves haved turned a dark burgundy on this H obscura - my question is, will it continue to get even darker or will it eventually burn at this level of light ? It gets direct morning sun for a couple of hours, I think. I don't want it to get damaged...
Paula
They shouldn't burn to a crisp with just morning light...but they will get very red where the light hits them....and if you don't like it...you can move it and the new growth won't burn...
Ok good, I'm glad it'll be fine where it is. I was concerned about burning it.
I don't want to move it - I love the red and I love love how it changes the
color of the flowers...
Thanks !
Thanks...what a beautiful photo....!!!!!
Thanks. My thread on avs and gesneriads [just another rainy monday morning] explains it. Cheryl
