Show Us Your Hummingbird Feeders, Vol. 1

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks GP for the moat info. And yes the pic helped the old blond brain!! I'll check them out at Wally then WBU.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

that last thing looks like it might be prone to leaking to me...Garden Guy

Hi Nanny
Thanks, I thought so too.
I found little info on them but here is a link. I guess it works on a vacuum type effect. You must fill the container completely before you place the feeder into the container. I'm not good at understanding the Law of Physics LOL

Does anyone have the shade umbrellas for your feeders?

I just ordered one for my Oriole feeder.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I look at those every year and think about getting one. But for the price not sure it is really worth it.

I don't need one for my Hummingbird feeder but the Oriole one is in full sun so...

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

GardenGuy.....is that netting going to be strong enough to hold a filled water bottle? doesn't seem like it would hold it.

hey.....anyone.....what is the formula for making hummingbird water? 1 part sugar, 4 parts water? ive got a new one too.

leaky brain syndrome =)

Marlton, NJ

Hi nannie, Yes that's correct but I go a little stronger during both migrations. 1-3

Hi nannie, As you can see the netting is holding as snug as a bug in a rug! LOL
It's working great. Will need to wait and see if it does so during the Summer months. The heat may make it more pliable

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

I don't think walmart has the ant moats this year. At least mine doesn't. Down here in the heat the built-in ones dry up in about two hours. The ants seem to just sit there and watch for it get dry. My Chickadees drink from my moats also. I was lucky to get them a couple of years ago when walmart still carried them. I thought about including a pic of a hummer with an ant on his beak here but I remembered that my computer crashed and I would have to look through a lot of DVDs to find the pic. Of the three types of feeders I have the hummers are only using walmart's cheapest.

I can't seem to get Picasa to work correctly so I'll have to fix it later. Here is the uncropped shot

of my Oriole feeder.

Marlton, NJ

I have to reload mine, I didn't do it right the first time. Maybe it's the same for you.

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

No ant moats here either. I looked at the local Co-op too.
I can't find fish emulsion either!

I'm not a WalMart fan.

Norman, OK

You can order ant moats for $5 through whatbird.com . Check their e-store.

As I have mentioned I have a little OCD problem. Now a few weeks back my DH accused me of hoarding Humming Bird feeders....the ones from Walmart that we all like. Now I plead guilty to that one...you always need a spare, right!

Anyway...picked these up today! 4 Black & Blue Salvia plants....and a red visor. Couldn't find a red cowboy hat Rose! LOL

LOL Nanny! Well glad you have plants for sale now. Just getting some here, but still too early for some of them. I put my hammock out over the weekend and thought that I should have purchased a red one!! Alas, it is only blue and purple.

Marlton, NJ

Where did you find them nanny?

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Thats really nice of you ,I now have a much better camera, with optical zoom not digital zoom, another lesson well learned!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

We have a fantastic place in a nearby town nearby called Old Farm Market....it is part market & part nursery and they sell fantastic plants. Last year I got the last 2 they had in the little 3 inch pots. I wanted to get first crack at some this year!

DH thought $20 a little much for 4 annuals, but I told him these were out of the entertainment budget, not landscaping/gardening... :0)

Places around here are just beginning to get stuff in.

Huggergirl, you just stick to your guns! Any special occasions coming ????

Cute pic Hugger!! I also learned the hard way about digital zoom!!

Nanny...I am very proud of you!! You did great and those Salvia plants are gonna give you lots of photo ops of the little Hummers!!

I went by our local garden center and they had lots of plants...unfortunately the prices were way too high for me. I will probably be getting the little 6 packs to save some money so I can buy more bird seed and feeders!!

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

No pictures, but I wanted to tell what happened to me earlier this week.

I've been transplanting all the wintersowing I did this year and was walking around the back yard watering flowers with a water can where the water hose doesn't reach. A hummingbird got right next to the water coming out of the spout and just hovered there for a minute or so. It was amazing...I couldn't see the wings, but I could clearly see the colors of it's chest and its body. I didn't move thinking it might get close enough to get a drink, but it just flew away. that was my 2nd one to see so far this year.

maybe it will come back to those flowers later when they've got blooms.

Marlton, NJ

That's great nanniepb! I have no doubt he'll be back for you!

Marlton, NJ

WalMart finally got their First Nature feeders back in so I bought the first one for me.

awesome! so easy to clean!

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

Ant moats can be made from measureing cup lids like the ones found on liquid laundry soap bottles and an eye bolt. I have not made one yet but I have put a lot of thought into it. It would require three nuts and two rubber washers(to keek the moat from leaking) for the eyebolt. After drilling a hole in the lid use one nut and washer inside the lid and a nut and washer on the other side. Then some kind of hook(maybe a bent wire) and another nut to secure it. Those type bottles come with different color measuring cup lids depending on the brand. I guess a hole could be drilled through the bottom of the eyebolt.

For those of you who want to purchase moats. I noticed that there still are some of the red umbrella ones on ebay that someone told about on this thread.

Pelle both sizes of those first nature feeders have really been selling good this year. We put the 16ounce one on an endcap two and a half months ago and have had to restock it everyday. They come eight to a case. I have had to restock two cases everyday and some days eight cases.

Nice one Burd!

Hi Frank, That's a good idea. I might have been the one to tell about the red umbrella ant moat since I have one.

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

Home made ant moat. Eye bolt with hole drilled in the end, laundry detergent bottle top with hole drilled dead center, 2 nuts, 2 steel washers and two washers made from seal wrap repair tape.

Good job Frank!

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Like your idea Frank. Reusable, recyclable, and pretty. Thanks for the idea.

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

A red one would have been better.
