Betsy: Is your Dragon Tree the Dracaena Marginata? There are a few listed in Plant Files with growing information and phtoto's:

Did the leaves turn yellowish in color before turning brown and dying? Usually the cause of brown leaf tips is lack of humidity. Try misting your plant daily to raise the humidity and see if that helps.

The best way to test to see if your plant needs water is to stick your finger down an inch or two into the soil to check for moisture. If it is dry, add a bit of water. Never let it sit in a lot of water or you will get root and cane rot.

Sometimes leaves turn brown for various reasons. I also though the tips turned brown from the impurities in the water you use. I have one Dracaena Marginata tree, and one smaller cutting and I have a tri-colour one as a cutting as well. They all get brown tips on them and some of the leaves do turn yellow and drop off. It's fine so long as they don't ALL do it.
