please help with Ebbinge's Silverberry 'Gilt Edge'

Shelton, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi....I am new here and am looking for some help.

I am hoping to buy some Silverberry shrubs 'Gilt Edge', latin name Elaeagnus x ebbingei, and noticed in the plant files that the plant may be invasive. I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with this plant, and if this is true, how I might keep it contained. It is a beautiful shrub, and I would like to keep it as a manicured shrub in my garden. Do I just need to keep it from setting seed?

This is a great site and I am having a great time looking at everyone's gardens. Thank you for any help.

Most Elaeagnus species grow extremely fast and produce fruits which can make seedlings throughout your yard. I had a Gilt Edge in my last yard and it never produced any seedlings but it did grow constantly which made it impossible to keep up with the pruning.

If you want a manicured look I'd suggest trying Golden Euonymus instead (Euonymus japonicus 'Aureo-marginatus) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/72345/ The leaf color gives you almost the same effect as a Gilt Edge would. (In full sun it tends to look more like CaptMicha's and Magwar's pictures than the others)

Thank you very much plantfreak!!! That shrub looks perfect! I was mainly going for the beautiful variegated look of the silverberry, and this plant looks just like it. Thank you, thank you.

I will warn you to watch closely for an insect this shrub can often have trouble with called Euonymus scale. Just make sure to carefully check the plants you're going to purchase for little white marks like these: http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/images/Pests/Pest310.jpg or these http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/entomology/ornamentals/1-34.jpeg
They are treatable but they can be a pain in the butt if you let them get out of hand.

Thank you for the info....now I just have to find a place to get this shrub.....

Down here they are commonly sold at Home Depot, Lowe's, Wal Mart and various nurseries. I don't think you'll have any trouble finding them. They are pretty.

Booooo HomeDepot, Lowes and Wal-mart! Try to find a local, privately owned nursery in your area and patronize them instead :) You're more likely to get well-cared-for, insect free plants there.
