need some landscaping tips for a steep hill

Dolgeville, NY

I have this hill I live in town and the back part of my 2 acre lot sloaps 30 ft down into a flat area the flat area nis prolly 10 ft then there is a creek . the hill is eroding and causing sink holes in my yard it is not that bad yet i want to do something down there like gardening because it is too much land to waist i was thinking about terising the hill with large wooden beams is that a good idea and does any one have any tips?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I have some large hills in my yard--if you look at my blog/diary I've got some pictures of how I handled them http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/m/ecrane3/ The back yard I did terraces with pressure treated wood and in the front I left the hill as-is and planted it and mulched it (you'd be surprised how much just having mulch on there will help reduce erosion). I don't know how steep your hill is--if it's something where you could do a series of short retaining walls no more than a couple feet high then it's a pretty simple thing (although still hard work if you do it yourself), but if the hill is really steep and you have to make taller retaining walls for the terraces then it's a much more complex job. Out here if the walls are over 3 ft high you need to get permits to make sure that the wall is engineered right.
