My neibour gave me seedlings from her peach trees last year. I planted one on either side of my front garden. One went wiled and grew about 3 foot. the other is at 1 1/2-2 foot. It seems to have stoped there. Who knows what it will do this year but I wonderd if maybe there is some difrence in the placements that is causeing the difrence in growth. I know what everyone says you cant start fruit trees from the seed. Well im actually a bit unsure about that. you cant tell me peaches and apples and pears dident spread befor we came along. They certaintly dident graf them selves. My neaibous has several started from the first and they all give yummy peaches. Are many trees you buy at the markets a hybred of some sort? Is that why they say you cannot start from seed?
peach trees.
You can start fruit trees from seed, trouble is most of the things you buy at the grocery store are hybrids so the fruit from your baby trees might not taste as good as the parent. Sometimes they might, so it never hurts to try as long as you won't be upset if they end up not being as tasty. If you want a sure thing, it's best to buy a plant from the nursery.
As far as why your two trees are different sizes, it could be something in the genetics of the two plants that one is going to be smaller and the other larger, or it could be the conditions but we'd need to know more about the conditions they're each in before it would be possible to speculate what might be going on.
They both came from the same tree. Would the genetics be difrent? I dont know what information would be needed. The smaller tree is on slightly lower ground. It probably gets more water. They are both planted on the east side of my yard. they are about 40 feet away from each other. Neither are in the shade of the house. I would post a picture but the yard is coverd in snow again. :( Every time it warms up I get all hopefull. Thanks for the help.
Yes, the genetics will be different even if they came from the same tree, that's what happens with seeds from a hybrid. Sometimes some of the babies will end up looking similar to each other or to the parents, but not necessarily. The amount of water could make a difference--if it's so much wetter that the tree is getting too much water then that could cause it to not grow as well, but if they're getting the same amount of sun, fertilizer, etc and both look equally healthy (no insect/disease issues) it's also very possible that the trees are just going to be different sizes.
ok. Thank you for the help. :)
