Ranunculus tubers: Which way is up?

Victoria, Canada

I've heard conflicting opinions on how to plant Ranunculus tubers. Some sites insist that they go claw side down, while others maintain the opposite. I have tried both ways, but so far have not seen any results. I did soak them first as instructed. Some of those that failed to sprout may not have had enough sun, but since I tried them in various locations in my garden, that can't be the case for all of them.

I think the last bunch I put in ended up sort of sideways, in a last ditch attempt to get something to happen. I'm not quite ready to give up, so any suggestions would be welcome.

FYI - I live in Zone 8, and have a fairly shady garden.

The legs should point up. I'd withhold water unless the soil gets very dry. The tubers rot easily if overly wet.

PS. Planting them sideways shouldn't be a problem, although it takes them a little longer because they have to figure out which way is toward gravity and which is away from gravity.

Hmmmm. Interesting subject. Last year was the first year I tried them. Didn't know what I was doing but studied the little mass of tuber. It appeared to me that the growth bud was on the more flat surface, and so I planted pointed ends down, which would probably be legs side down. They did great. I was gonna post some blooms but couldn't find the photos. Because I'm in zone 5, I had to lift to store the tubers. As I dug them, they were still pointed side down and they had increased nicely. Also, I planted pretty shallow and a couple weeks before our last frost day because somehow I was thinking they needed a cool period to get started. I planted mine direct to their garden location.

i've always planted mine with the legs down they do alright. But what about anemones. those things are impossible!

Well thanks, all. I'll let you know what happens, although I think it'll be at least a couple more months until I know if they've worked.

As for anemones, I can barely pronounce the name, let alone grow them successfully. I have put quite a few in, but very few actually came up. Maybe they'll multiply?

He he. I planted mine upside down, then. But they have done great, multiplied and come back for the past 2 years.

Anemones who the heck could tell? I just pop the little sucker in a hole and let it figure out which way is up.
