I live in southern california. I got 10 Australian Brush Cherry shrubs in one gallon containers. They were nice and healthy and some even had flowers on them. About three days after having them we had a few weeks of bad weather with frost and rain. Slowly the Brush Cherry shrubs started turning brown and dropping their leaves. They look dead but the inside of the stems are still green. I thought it might be from the cold weather we were having but from all I've read these shrubs don't respond to cold by dropping leaves. Out of the 10 shrubs only 2 did not drop leaves and seem to be doing well right now. I have no clue what happened to them to make them drop their leaves. Does anyone know what it might be and do you think these shrubs are still viable? Salvageable?
Bush Cherries dropping leaves
My bush cherries also lost leaves with this last cold snap. They have done it before, they will come back. Probably the few that did not lose leaves were in some way more protected. But they are hardy, just got shocked. Lovely plants, I just love mine. The ones in pots did suffer more from the cold that the ones in the ground for me, as I have both. I would try and get them in a place with a little protection if you expect more cold weather. If they are sopping wet, put them in a place where they can dry out a bit. Sometimes the roots will rot with too much water when they are in containers.
