Mint patch

Ann Arbor, MI

I am a novice gardener with a huge mint patch that I'd like to encourage. I know that's rare, but I'm also a florist and I use it in my arrangements. It's been hardy, deep green and tall for the last 5 years, but this past summer it's gone weak and leggy. Any fertilizer or other suggestions?

I wonder if it needs to be thinned out???

if its leggy you need to thin it out most types of mint if you let it go will get leggy trim it like you would with basil or any other type of herb and it should regain its fullness and you could use mirical grow but becareful as mint tends to go every where when encouraged

I would whack it back, and it will grow back full. Like DancingRabbit says - don't encourage it too much!

My mint gets that scraggly look when it hasn't gotten much rain. I actually watered it a lot last year as I needed to dry a huge amount of the leaves for tea. If it is well watered you can cut it to the ground several times and it will grow back bushy pretty quick.

JuneyBug makes a very good point: mint likes lots of water.

Wow! This is the first I'm hearing of someone wanting to encourage a mint patch! It took me forever to uproot the invader from the rest of my garden. Of course, there's nothing like trying to eradicate it to encourage new growth. Mine was in nearly full shade, near a downspout. For me, mint is a container plant forever more.
