I am new to gardening and have just planted some August Beauty Gardenias along a small flower bed in the front of my house. At the time of my purchase I wanted some form of flowering shrub to fill the space but had no idea how large they can get and am now quite concerned. I have planted three of them in an area about 8ft long and 3ft wide, underneath a bay window. My question is whether or not I will be able to contain these shrubs to a reasonable size in such a relatively small area (Id prefer them not to completely cover the window)?
Gardenias (Possible to keep them on the smaller side?)
Yes, you can prune them to contain them but it will be a constant and never-ending battle. Plus, the roots will begin to crowd each other out because they are planted too closely. You're better off moving them to a spot that can handle a six-by-six foot shrub and filling the space with a dwarf cultivar like 'Kleim's Hardy', 'Daisy', 'Frostproof' or a brand new cultivar called 'Crown Jewel' (and only plant 2 because they each need four feet of space to grow into).
