Need help with queen palm plantings

Phoenix, AZ

My husband dug a hole yesterday somewhat bigger than the root ball and then threw the soil in and when I watered them a hole appeared at the top of the soil! I know having air in the root area is bad, right? What do I do now? I filled in the holes as best I could and tamped them down but is that enough? Will they need to be pulled out and re-planted?

I wouldn't tamp down too much as these guys have fairly shallow roots as far as I know. Just deep water again and add more soil where it settles (make sure you don't bury any of the trunk!).

when i planted my palms and including my sago palm that take a year to sprout, i knew one day i was going to raise the pond garden up more like 6 inches or maybe 8 i kept them raised but well covered with soil around about 3 ft out from the trunk...but the air pocket most likely came from UNDER the rootball. we have lots of red orange and grey clay where we live so we make sure to prepare our soil well and deep and large..i pick out the clay junks and leave some of the softer more pliable clay and mix it with organic humus and mulch from walmart of course lol....i add some sand for drainage and water rentention...i learned here in bay st louis mississippi it is CRITICAL to prepare the soil...well enough already nice posting to you
