I didn't realize R is giving away ae aes and trips to HI. I was running an errand in the Houston Galleria, just inside the loop and caught these payayas happily growing by an office building. I am looking for a dwarf payaya w/ good edible fruit. Anybody have one and/or a source to get one?

Those look like nice trees...
I just picked 2 papayas off the tree today...
Do you want dwarf? Do all of the dwarfs produce? or are they male & female?

p.s....no the varigated gardenia has not bloomed yet

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I know nothing about dwarf papaya, but I know I don't want to climb way up high for get my fruit. I read somewhere that you can top off your regular payaya but I haven't done serious research on it.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL, I don't think you'll have to worry about Hawaiin height on our Papaya trees...they'll never make it that long. Most of mine are my height, the oldest one though is pretty tall.

how old is your oldest? so about 6 ft tall? That I can handle. How thick is the trunk

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Super article Randy. I wrapped and mulched mine ever so carefully. Trunk froze anyway.
Now I have 5-6 little stems poking up from the bottom. I had already cut it off but left about 9 or so inches and it has sealed itself. Just went and looked. Crossing my fingers.

Christi

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

The oldest about 12 feet tall, 6 years old. probably 6 inch trunk....

It went through a freeze, and it grew a few tops more than it started with.

These are the trees I picked fruit off of today..about 5 and 4 feet...I never planted these trees.. Hurricane Rita did a few years ago. it was a banner year for papaya fruit, so I just let them fall to the ground...this little row grew on it's own.

Yeah Christi, they don't like cold at all..I would have put it in the house during freezes!

phughes, thanks for the new thread, I will never get enough of those powder puff flowers. I have a few new blooms on my plant today. It is amazing how early they begin to bloom , the one I have came from Zone 9 already with blooms on it about 2-3 ft. tall.
How long did it take your plant to get that big?
The electricity was off this morning so I was out in the GH posing my blooms.

Rj, That is the biggest pink magnolia tree that I have seen. That is a sure sign of Spring.
It is cloudy and dreary here today too. I want all of those Hibiscus plants, Misbehavin is at the top of the list.

it says it's seedless. Forget Hawaii, it'll be Melbourne now Jerry!. Looks like that's where we'll have to go to pick up that papaya tree. I think the only way you will get a tree, is picking it up at the nursery. I don't think any nursery on line or other will ship them..they do not tolerate shipping at all! Vossner ..you want us to be on the look out for dwarfs next weekend when we're shopping? Buchanans might have some.

Red Oak, TX

Rj, I am already so excited from just reading your blog. We are finally going to do it. I am also excited about meeting Patty and LouC as well. Last year we planned a trip to Florida that fizzled out, but I think that this is really going to happen.
I am sad to say that there is going to be one eye-roller in the bunch, my DH. He is my navigator, lifter of heavy pots, packer etc. My buddy TrueTropical is on a mission trip in Haiti. dh will sit in the vehicle and read, he is a bookworm.

Planter56, I did not find a dwarf papaya at Logee's, but I did find a dwarf June plum that I was looking for. thanks

Rita I think it took a couple of years; I believe I bought a 5 gallon plant to begin with. It is just now beginning to bloom. I have some african violet plant food that a friend brought me and I usually use it on some my blooming shrubs and it works wonderfully. It's about time to get that out again. I haven't used it all winter.

That is a pretty hibiscus Rita. I have one on my list. RJ has a picture of it so when you get a chance, post the pink lemonade hibiscus will ya. It is a pretty one.

Nice blog Randy! I get excited just thinking about the trip. Looking forward to meeting everybody--Christi, Jerry, Rita--you just can't beat the hospitality at Jungle Heights either. The countdown has begun--11 days until plant shopping heaven!!!! Woo Hoo
