Coffee Break # 5 - Spring is not too far off!

I am itching to start my Oriental Poppies.
DD says too early they will get spindly, so I will clean the garden instead.

Wow, Jo Ann---everything here is still frozen--my gardens still have SNOW on them!

I am going to try and winter sow some poppies outside... seem like a good candidate since they reseed

I germinated some oriential poppies last year, planted them but no flowers. Maybe this year. If not something will take its place.

I'll be direct sowing more poppies in a couple of weeks onewish. This year I'm adding some 'Green Apple' and a new lilac to the mix. I luv poppys.

I am sowing OP seeds in the garage in April and bringing them into the house.
I dont put anything in the ground until May.

I planted one on my wife for Valentines Day!

Afraid not! I was in my car , no camera. It is not a good year for them, but they and the red buds are blooming.

I do to, just wish we could grow the pink and red down here.

They are pretty but they don't smell as great as the white ones IMHO.

All the ones in my area died years ago. I am thinking about trying to plant one. I hope that what every killed them is now gone.

Maybe go with the cornus kousa (asian) or a cross of the kousa and the cornus florida (native). The kousa is more disease resistant. We have the cornus nuttallii here on the west coast. It's susceptible to diseases too but very prettiful.

We can not get cornus kousa here. In face out of state nurseries are not allowed to send cornus of any kind to Florida.

I almost went to prison once for bringing an OR apple into CA. I was picnicing my way down the Pacific Coast highway. Good thing it was sitting on the front seat in plain view so I wasn't fruit smuggling. I still have guilt about that apple. I wonder if they threw it a cell with a gang of oranges.
