Coffee Break # 5 - Spring is not too far off!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I am itching to start my Oriental Poppies.
DD says too early they will get spindly, so I will clean the garden instead.

Thomaston, CT

Wow, Jo Ann---everything here is still frozen--my gardens still have SNOW on them!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am going to try and winter sow some poppies outside... seem like a good candidate since they reseed

I germinated some oriential poppies last year, planted them but no flowers. Maybe this year. If not something will take its place.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I'll be direct sowing more poppies in a couple of weeks onewish. This year I'm adding some 'Green Apple' and a new lilac to the mix. I luv poppys.

Me too but they don't like it down here. DARN!!!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I can't direct sow too many things... I keep pulling them thinking they are weeds

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Ya but look what you CAN have wren ^_^

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I'm constantly asking seedlings 'Are you a good witch or a bad witch?'

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I know, thought right now everything looks dead. I am waiting to see what will come back from the freeze.

ooh ooh ooh "a good witch or a bad witch" Look into a Pagan Garden.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I love the California poppies.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Get a grip everyone!!!!!
I am sowing OP seeds in the garage in April and bringing them into the house.
I dont put anything in the ground until May.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I planted one on my wife for Valentines Day!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

now see - that's the beauty of wintersowing. If it's big enough - I plant it out regardless of the month as it has already been hardened off! :)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Not even sweet peas ge1836? Spring lettuce? No early direct seeding?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Another drum roll please.

THE DOGWOODS ARE BLOOMING!!!!!!!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow! Lucky you. Pics??

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Afraid not! I was in my car , no camera. It is not a good year for them, but they and the red buds are blooming.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Drum roll please

NOTHING IS BLOOMING. BUT AT LEAST IT'S STOPPED SNOWING!!!

LOL Wren I TOTALLY luv dogwoods ^_^

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I do to, just wish we could grow the pink and red down here.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

They are pretty but they don't smell as great as the white ones IMHO.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

All the ones in my area died years ago. I am thinking about trying to plant one. I hope that what every killed them is now gone.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Maybe go with the cornus kousa (asian) or a cross of the kousa and the cornus florida (native). The kousa is more disease resistant. We have the cornus nuttallii here on the west coast. It's susceptible to diseases too but very prettiful.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey! Dahlianut - have you had a chinook lately?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Yupper up in the high 50sF for a stretch beginning of Feb. Now NOT LOL. Back to mid 20sF.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Is that the CA equiv of a Jan thaw?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Nope just a usual Chinooky thing where we all walk around without mittens and touques and get pneumonia. Same old.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

We do that at football games.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

We can not get cornus kousa here. In face out of state nurseries are not allowed to send cornus of any kind to Florida.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I wondered about that. Much like the Fruit Police.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Can't send Cornus florida to Florida?!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Some kind of buggy that they do not want in the state.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Oh the Florida native is ok if bought inside the state but can not be imported into the state. (????) Go figure.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Palmetto?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

No you can get as much Palmetto as you want. How many plants should I send you?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I almost went to prison once for bringing an OR apple into CA. I was picnicing my way down the Pacific Coast highway. Good thing it was sitting on the front seat in plain view so I wasn't fruit smuggling. I still have guilt about that apple. I wonder if they threw it a cell with a gang of oranges.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I knew you were a little shady, dnut!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

dnut you're too funny!

South Hamilton, MA

Still snow outside--storm coming Wed night, but don't know if we will have snow or rain.
