STARTING PLANTS FROM SEEDS

Chesapeake, VA

When growing plants from seeds, what is the best way to keep them from being spindly or leggy?
Also... is it better to use a grow light ( and if so... how many hours each day?) or natural sunlight?
I am going to try to grow phlox, marigolds soon and have never attemtped growing from seeds!! Any assistance would be appreciated

You'll be able to start things sooner if you do it indoors with a grow light--the trick with them is you have to have the light no more than a couple inches above the tops of the seedlings or else they don't do nearly as much good. I leave mine on 14-16 hrs a day.

Marigold are a great flower to start with since they are relatively easy. I use florescent shop lights, and keep my on about 16 hours. I also start everything on a heatmat, but I doubt that is necessary for marigolds. I haven't started phlox from seed.

Going to try to grow red plume grass from seed I kept last year.
Will start the seed next week in the house, hope it comes up...
Can be expensive to buy and sometimes hard to find.
Has anyone ever tried it?
