Gardening: Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #29

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

I feel like a grandma seeing those 'wild thing' babies. OK, it's the closest I can get to being a grandma for the time being! Glad they germinated for you Neal. They are probably a mix of what came off my plant and what I snitched in the mall parking lot!

SingingWolf,
What a happy story. Loved the pictures.
Critter - Happy Birthday!

Oh, I meant to tell y'all earlier when I was talking about the cheap potting soil I'm using (and liking), NO gnats! I've had no gnat issues with it at all! The surface drys quickly, I think that has something to do with it.

Here are Salvia argentea- look how fuzzy!

SW , I hope your little hummer gets out, that's so thoughtful of you to think of the fans I'm sure he appreciates it!

Neal, I spot a couple of my seeds in there, you are going to love those two, nice babies! They look so healthy! I planted lion's tail a few times and just couldn't get them to germinate :( I love the Cobea blooms those are nice, they don't look real to me I haven't grown those for a few years.

Happy Birthday Critter! Hope you had lots of babies comming up today ;-)

Off Topic, but wanted to make a quick note about the fans, Dad (Trois) and Barbara used to rescue a lot of birds that had been maimed by ceiling fans. People turn off your ceiling fans before you let your birds fly around the house! The hummer has been identified as a juvenile male Anna's Hummingbird, thanks to a couple of smart DG'ers.
Finally can show you Cineria seedlings! Yippee!

Carolyn have you been sick too, so many people around her has that awful flu going around!

I've meant to ask you do you have any seeds to those cute little mounding mex. petunias may be in pink? If you don't would you save me some for next year :) I had mine planted around my wisteria and the runners from the darn wisteria took them over! I really miss them :) That wisteria BTW is from you too LOL

OOPS! moved it to the other thread LOL

OM goodness, I FINALLY came to the end of the discussions :). I think I've found my gardening soul people!

Happy Birthday Jill!!!!

I am so envious of you guys that have loads of your seeds sprouting. I've learned to wait a bit due to my late season so I can't wait for March 1st to come! I have learned how to make my own homemade wallpaper paste so will be sowing my Heliotrope in that. It has this crazy sowing requirement that germinates at 80 degrees for 20 days (going to put it right on my heat register) then it need alternating temps of 75 days/65 nights for 2 weeks after germination then grow at 60 degree for strong plants - whew! Definitely will be easier to baggy this! The biggest problem I have will baggy sowing is that the roots stick to the paper towel. Wish me luck, my wallpaper recipe is:
Homemade wallpaper paste

1 cup cornstarch
1 scant cup sugar (more than ¾, but less then 1)
2 teaspoons powdered alum

Mix above together with just enough water to dissolve the ingredients. Then add 6 quarts of rolling boiling water, stirring constantly. This paste can be stored in an air-tight container for some time.

I did a stupid thing, The Calendula sprouted so beautifully in Grandma's cupbaord but I forgot about the darn things! I just had to pitch all the seeds! Work/my lack of memory just gets in the way of my planting success!!! I've decided to get a blackberry in March so I can remember everything!

I'm pretty sure I just left heliotrope on my heat mat (80 degrees) and it germinated fine... then I moved it onto an unheated shelf, which is probably 70-75 days and 65-65 nights.

I don't understand what you are doing with the wallpaper paste... ?

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

I did the same as critter ... heat mat at 80 degrees. My lights and heat mat are on a timer, so at night everything cools down to 60 in the basement when they turn off. I have one container still on the edge of the heat mat, the other completely off, both seem to be doing just fine. About a week to germinate I think.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My lights are on a timer like that, but the heat mats are not -- they stay on 24/7.

We're over here guys, come join us :)
