Gardening: Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #29

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Gemini that is such a good idea!! : ) The only thing that stinks here about near the road for veggies is all the salt from road cleanup in winter. We don't have a sidewalk or anything to keep it out. We get a lot!
Lea I don'twant to lift concrete either! Have I ever told you guys I'm only 5' tall? I'm practically a midget ; ) The mold I got wasn't that bad. It was twenty dollars and the place threw in a free bag of poppy seeds. And it was like a medium size seed package typical of trading seeds completely full. : )
I think it was cheap seeds?
sciccerella - can I ask what your real name is? I have a hard time remembering how to spell your name and I feel rude if I spell it wrong : ) Anyway I kinda played around with a picture and I am not awesome at describing north south east and west. So I made a little sketch well if I can call it that. The compass is like that on purpose trying to show the exposure. Did I do it how you said? : )

Oh and everyone I think I need a rose bush ain there, and I am finding I am love with peachy pink or coral bicolored with yellow this year. Am I the only one that picks a favorite color every year? Last year I was in love with blue.

You have been in my thoughts a lot lately.

gemini I forgot to say that I think I'll do two arbors - one at the entrance too. For the one in the pic I was thinkingto have a bench so it looks built in. I was even thinking maybe dh can make me one. He is alaways bragging about his metal skills. lo

Hey Lala_Jane! thanks for the hibiscus seed offer. Cross your fingers that a few might germinate for me (not all! I probably planted over 90 seeds!)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Hey Veonica, nice to see you on here too! I'm back, I missed my gardening buddies lol

Meredith, did you get that mold locally? If I could find one for $20 I would get one, just one mold though it would take forever to make as many as I want to put thru my beds for walking on them, you have a lot of beds too don't you? I was wanting to tweak my beds this year and that's one of the things I want to work on making something to walk on in them. Gourd on here made some stepping stones with his own molds, I think I was watching that thread I'll have to see if I can find it...

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

90 and they will all come up

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh my gosh! What would I do with 90 hardy hibiscus? EGADS!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

now you may loose a few hardening them but you will still have lots and a suggestion is that you could sell the plants have a plant sale combo garage sale

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Seandor I'm sure you wouldn't have any problem putting the extra hibiscus on here to trade either but I would like to see you transplanting that many lol

Meredith, Here’s a thread about Gourd on here making stepping stones from Hypertufa and Concrete, I think she got the recipe from Tom Tom on the Hypertufa and Concrete forum, I’ll need to do a little more research to find it lol I don’t have time tonite but I do want to find it for when I want to start making my stepping stones. I don’t have much of an imagination so I have to look at everyone else’s creativity lol I have some plastic butterflies I want to use for those too cause I want butterflies on my stones too!

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/752516/

It's a cool idea but sounds they are heavy lol Something I would need help with and a little 5' lady too LOL

Need to get back to the seeds :)

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I got mine from cheap seeds but they must have ran out. I found the same one I got here. http://www.mudart.com/allmolds.html If you scroll down you'll see it - it's the one that says butterflies. : )

Just a quick drive through. I had to tell you about something I am tres excited about. I scarfed some pentas seeds from a neighbor last fall or at least I thought I did. Maybe I should say I scarfed some dust and hoped there was some seed in there somewhere. They had 3 different colored plants and I snitched off all three plants. The rose colored seeds germinated in 8 days but boy did they grow slooooowly. I transplanted them when they were 3 weeks old even though they were still no bigger than a pin head. Sadly neither the white or the burgundy ever germinated.
:-(

I have no idea why I hadn't given up on them after over a month, but low and behold I just found 2 tiny green specs in the white penta container. Holy cow I sowed those seeds 33 days ago! Why in the world did the rose seeds germinate in a week and the white ones took 4 times that long? Crazy!

Waving wildly at all..... ....so good to see you Lea!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Hey La, sorry I missed your birthday I meant to wish you a belated one and forgot, H appy Belated Birthday LOL I'm forgetting too much these days just too much on this pea brain of mine here lately :)

I tried Penta seeds a couple of years and finally gave up didn't have any luck with them even got my magnifying gass out incase I was just blind! Tonight I'm planting some lovely begonia seeds I got from ansonfan, I tried the same ones last year with no luck but these are pelleted so I'm hoping I have better luck lol These little fine seeds are such a trip! I never have any trouble starting the pink begonia and those seeds are dust!

Can anyone tell me if I should start the ageratum seeds I got from MamawK now are they slow growers like the begonias? I think I'm finally getting it in gear LOL

Meredith they have a few lovely molds on there sure wish I was back to work LOL That one is just covered in butterflies how neat! I love it!

This is what Tplant said I think I like this Idea..And like you said the price of the reflective film is not worth it.Thanks for your help

Tubby --- Just make sure you use cool light flourescent or you can burn your plants. Actually all you have to do is drape both sides of the lamp with aluminum foil like a curtain.

Hi guys,
Sorry I haven't been able to post for awhile. Been busy wanting to do things like plant seeds, but have had to deal with my Mom having a mini-stroke, breaking two bones in her ankle, one on each side, her surgery, time in rehab, and now she is home with us. It's been real stressful.
Something wonderful happened this morning. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/954218/
Cheered me up, cheered Mom up. Even my teens were impressed.
I still have a bunch of catch up to do, but my sweet peas are sprouting. I haven't had some of the successes you all are reporting, but then again, I haven't had much time since Mom fell down on the 31st of Jan. Even if I wasn't posting, I was lurking.
Hoping to get out and see what the rain did to the farm! Really should finish planting more seeds too!

SingingWolf, glad to hear your mom is on the road to recovery. I know how stressful life can be when we find ourselves in the role of caregivers. God sent you a special gift when your little hummer came to visit. How wonderful.

Critter, happy birthday!

Happy Birthday Critter!

I am very happy today, folks - it looks like the Lady Baltimore Hibiscus is germinating!

Also - I have tiger lily seeds germinating in their coffee filters - boy, did that take a long time! I received these in trade - (sorry, I don't have the package in front of me, so I don't know who to thank . . . )

Anyway, I am very happy today! Besides it is raining outside - not snowing! That is a good sign, right?

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Whooooooohoooooooooooooo It's Birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to YOU CRITTER!!!!!!

Have a Happy one Critter!

So ... I was out buying a pack of Oriental Poppy seeds to replace mine that did not grow and I found 2 more interesting ones... Tower Light Rose Columbine and Tower Light Blue. Ok, your right, I picked them up.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Ooohh...I have Clematis 'Radar Love' germinating!! My very first Clematis from seed!

...and Cobea (Cup and Saucer vine) are very weird looking, kinda like snakes with the big seed coats being shed like skin. One seed was evidently upside down (although I have no idea how to tell the difference), and the root came out the top and curled its way to the potting soil.

Happy Bday Critter-I hope you get to play in some dirt today!!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the kind comments about the hummer. Really, all he needed was to warm up. Will work on planting more food for the silly beast. I really hope he finds his way out. I'll be moving the feeder closer to the door of the green house to encourage him. It's supposed to be warm the next few days. Too bad, 'cause we need the rain.

Critter I wanted to wish you the Happiest Birthday Ever! You make this world a much brighter place for the rest of us! Nice article today too!
