Gardening: Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #29

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Another seedling that just seems naturally tall and skinny is Lion's Tail. I remember them doing that last year, right under the lights too. Once they started getting true leaves they bulked right up.

I've been getting pics of the new seedlings. Thinking of all the times I've wanted to know what I was looking for while waiting for a seed to germinate, and finally remembering to do it and hopefully have some to post on PlantFiles. We've recently switched around the computers in the house and I've still got to get the camera software on this one.

Been enjoying observing the differences in various Salvia seedlings. I'm finding them a most fascinating genus.

Oh, I've fallen behind on this thread again. But I had to drop in and ask...

Anybody want PEPPERS for postage?

I've got some passalong commercial seeds to give away, plus some from my stash and now smokemaster is sending some along for me to share also...

I posted a list in the Pepper forum, but they've had a day or so to jump on it, so now I'm posting invitations. :-)

Hi Critter! : ) I have a ton of peppers from the swap, so I am going to pass - Thanks though!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

critter, when do you start your peppers?

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I already started peppers cuz they slow growing.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Star, when is it safe to set them out there?

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I wait until I know frost is good and well over cuz they wont grow unless they have heat.

They sun loving warm weatherplants and if it not hot enough for them outsid e they wil sit and sulk til it is.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

About what date? Here I get them in the last couple of weeks of May.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Oh... I put mine out aroudn end of april. and Critter is above you, so maybe somewhere in the middle depending on when she does hers?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

So you start 'em 10-12 weeks before set out date? I'm thinking I should go for around March 1 to get them started.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Normally i cna put plants out here beginign of april and last frost date is april 15th, but every year we get ice storms that destory eveythign or tonadoe sor hurricane s so am waiting and extra two weeks before puttign out this year cuz they said weather was gonna be crazy

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Uuuggg...that reminds me of the week of temps in the low 20s we had at the end of April in '07. Everything turned to snot.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I going down to 22F tommorrow night. after all the warm weather. everything uncovered and growing i gonan have to hussle plastic covers all over the place

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yep, first week in March for me, and set pepper out Memorial Day... if you plant them in cool soil, they just sulk.

Ah, very good, critter. I was thinking our timing would be about the same.

Found 2 more WS jugs germinating today! Echinacea Double Decker and Dianthus 'Spooky' both from the swap. Seems like this is a little earlier than I've had sprouts in the past.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Anyone growing Ipomaea lobata (Spanish Flag vine)? The one I grew last year was given to me as a plant in June (the one I saved seed from). I was assuming they'd be treated like other Ipomaea- Morning Glory.

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

Critter, I signed up for the postage peppers. I was talking to oneof my brothers and he sounded interested in growing a lot of varieties, and he has lots more land than I do. :o)

He will probably ask me to start them for him though.

It got close to 50F here today, and its been dry for a few days, so I took advantage of it and got the leach field sown. OMG, its really huge! The whole thing is covered with Poppies of all kinds and colors now! And so many other seeds y'all sent have been sown down there- Echinacea, Coreopsis, Cleome, Cornflowers, Rudbeckia, Ox Eye perennial Sunflowers, several of the extras of things I've already wintersown . I still have a bunch held back that I'll sow when its warmer too, like Zinnias, Marigolds, Sunflowers, and Morning Glories. The soil is great, and perfectly tilled and ready. Guess thats the first working of the soil I've done this year, felt good!...although I can already tell I'm going to be sore. That just means spring is on the way, LOL.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

>>The whole thing is covered with Poppies of all kinds and colors now!

you have color?? can we see pics??

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

...well, the seeds, LOL. But if you could see in my head....

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Neal are your poppies blooming now? I w ant to see pictures too! lol

On your Ipomaea lobata, I soaked mine 24 hrs. then planted seems like it still took them a while to come up, I tried to take better notes last year and find I'm lacking again!!!

You all are killing me with all of your lovely sprouts and I haven't even started sowing yet :( I have 4 5 gal. buckets of dirt to start on tonite with my WS and almost have one shelf ready so I can start on my stands planting lol Does that count lol

I've been lurking and trying to catch up but you all are a hard buch to keep up with ;-)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Neal you are just teasing us! You know how hard up we are for blooms LOL

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

hahahahhaa I fell for it too, LOL Was gonan say if you so ful of cover, come til and de weed me and plant. hahahahha good one.

Hi Lea! : ) So happy to see ya : )
Okay everyone all the talk of lasagna beds made me think of my new bed I will be able to start this year. I've decided this is going to be my cottage garden. I am going to try to apply all the wonderful things I've learned here in the cottage forum to it. I need to be able to fit in a minimum of cherry tomatoes, reg. toms and cucumbers into the plan. Oh and a bench and arbor too. : )

cool sounds lovely

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Hopefully but I may need some help from all my cottage garden friends! : ) I'm off to a good start with all these wonderful seeds everyone sent me. : )

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

yes seeds turn into plants and you will need lots of those hahahha sorry late and tired

do remember put arbor on north side as not to shade and bench on west as to face the morning and afternoon sun unless you want to shade your bench using the arbor
vegies usually need about 8 or more hours of sunlight

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I was thinking about how to place an arbor, and I want to try and place it so it will keep the sun out of your eyes while sitting there, and so you can see the garden at the same time. Still keeping in mind what you said about the exposures. I am not sure how I will do it yet. This is probably the sunniest spot in my yard. Besides the very edge of my yard near the road. Which I will not try to grow veggies in. lol ; )
It gets sun first in the morning, out of all the spots in my yard. There are a lot of trees that block the early morning sun here, but it gets sun about 8 or 9 am until the sun sets, so it is the best I have for veggies. I know early sun is best but I just don't have any here unfortunately.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi Meredith :)

I was wondering what are you going to plant on your arbor is it something that wouldn't mix with morning glories? You could plant some morning glories like 3 or four on something to climb to hide what is by the shed, I use a 6' pole with chicken wire on it for them to climb and last year I had a couple of limbs cut off of my cedar tree that I'm going to plant with climbers for this year, I may have a few of the Ipomaea lobata seeds, I have a sprig of them sitting on the book shelves that I haven't gone thru yet to see how many I have that are good they wouldn't mix with morning glories. Are you going to put your arbor there?

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks Lea, Do you know what things don't mix with morning glories? I have morning glory seeds I could use, I also have Cardinal Climbers, a lot of purple hyacinth bean, a few leftover scarlet runners and Sweet peas. What ones should I do? After I posted that picture I realized I had fixed up that spot quite a bit since that pic. That was the spot that I had a big pile of barnyard grass that yellow jackets or wasps had made a nest in. And when I tried to start digging it out - they attacked and stung me! I did end up getting to it sometime in the fall. It's neater but I do still have a bunch of stuff from dh on the side. It is stacked as best as I could. It is still an eye sore though. Maybe I'll find a newer pic to post at some point.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't think any of those would cross pollinate, just morning glories so any of those should be good if you want morning glories just plant the same ones in that spot :)

Watch those bees lol I was worried about a spot under my dogwood tree last fall when I was planting there I had a lot of those wasps that live in the ground there, I was so afraid the kittens would get stung by them too because they were there while I was planting and trying to get them lol

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Anyone heard from SingingWolf lately.... i just dawned on me that i have not seen a post from her in a while.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

so you could put the arbor facing the north east since you do ot get morinng sun

you could plant some vines at each end of it and when they kick in you can then position the bench

its easy to move the bench not so easy to move the arbor

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

I was reading about starting Hostas .This was what they said Any thoughts if this would be okay for tomatoes or flowers ect..

Second‑hand fluorescent bulbs are good enough. Here is a trick to maximize light reflection. Go to any hydroponics shop and purchase some mirrored foil to line the sides around your growing area. This will maximize light reflection. Using such reflectors permits you to set the fluorescent light bulbs two to three feet above your growing bench and triple your growing area. In addition, if twelve hours of light is too costly, you can drop down to six or eight hours per day, since all light is contained within the growing area.

I had noticed that the other day and then on the seed tradign forum seenwhere she had posted and not sure what happened but she I believe was ill or had somethign happen. Not sure exactly what.

All I knwo is she was not doign good there for abit and hope she doign better now.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Tubby,
Ok, I'm going to tell you something that someone else will come on here and say some thing else completely different probably, we'll wait until everyone sees this and has enough time to chime in lol Critter or Star may have something to say I'm really interested to hear what she says :)

I have bought this reflective film that they are talking about and I used it for two years and have planted downstairs for about five years now and cannot tell any difference in my plants seedlings what so ever, now if someone just has one light to each shelf instead of two it would probably work better...as far as the lights not needing the required12-16 hrs. of light I don't see how that would make the light better so you could use less hours in light I think they need that light, I just don't understand how the reflective film would give them enough light in eight hours to make up for 12-16 hrs.

Second hand bulbs doesn't sound like they would last that long I have used bulbs for two years but after that I get rid of them and I always put one good bulb with the one that I'm using the second year if possible after the first year the second year they always start turning black on the ends which means they are about out so the light isn't as strong and the reflective film might come in handy there but I really haven't noticed a difference myself as a matter of fact my reflective film is sitting in the boxes and I don't even bother to use it anymore, now I'm putting seed trays under table top lights this year in my kitchen and I'll use a piece of reflective film for that but mainly because I want my kittens to stay out of my seed trays LOL

Using reflective film couldn't hurt but I think if you went to a dollar store and bought cheap foil it would do the same thing, the reflective foil isn't cheap :)

Tubby where did you see this at? I want to go read about it :)

Oh lea I was thinking the morning glory would choke out certain vines lol. I am not a MG buff so it wouldn't bothe rme if they mix. Maybe I would get one I could name : )
I want to include some paths too. I got this cute mold to make stepping stones with. You mix a bag of concrete and pour it in. It has little butterflies on it. I keep bugging my husband to get me some concrete and he still hasn't : (

Meredith, what a fun project! I just had a "vision" of a kind of secret garden idea. The arbor could mark the entrance, and your bench could be hidden within, where you'd be shaded and surrounded with all the fragrances. Can't you just imagine having morning coffee there this summer in your own little secluded room of blooms! Perhaps tomatoes or vining veggies like cucumbers or pole beans could form a "wall" that would give them good sun exposure and shield the plants within. Tall plants like Tithonia, Sunflowers, Cannas, Dahlias, Lilies, Grasses or trellised vines could shield stuff you want hidden.

Also, you mentioned avoiding veggies by the road, but remember there are some very ornamental veggies that combined with ornamentals are very striking. Various peppers, Bronze leaved okra, colorful lettuces, Bright Lights Chard, and purple Cabbage can all make exceptional landscape plants. I grew some purple cabbage one year that looked like giant purple roses- gorgeous!

I found 2 more WS jugs germinating today! Alyssum and Primrose Gem Chrysanthemum from Tuink.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

OL I was thinking the same thing if the other vines mixed :)

I've seen those molds for the stepping stones in your garden but the ones I was wanting were so expensive! Plus I don't have anyone to lift the concrete for me. They even tried to get a coop started last year for molds but geesh they were so expensive! The one with the butterfly sounds really nice I think I would like that one too!
