New to Houseplants

Saint Peters, MO

Okay......A lady gave me ALOT of plants this weekend. A 7 foot tall ficus, a hindu rope, a very big dumb cane and a small dumb cane that is bushy instead of tall. She said I needed to split it up, but I have no idea how!!!

Also, she gave me 19 african violets. Do I need to have a grow light for them.

My hubby has always had the green thumb, and I had the bright idea that I needed a new hobby. I hope that I can turn my thumb green!!!

How lucky you are to be the recipient of such great plants!

Regarding a grow light for your african violets, it depends upon whether you have enough sunlight. I used to keep my african violets in a south facing window, and they did quite well.

As for your dumb cane. I'm assuming that by "bushy instead of tall" you mean that there are several canes in one pot. Unless the the plant is rootbound, I don't think it's necessary to separate them. But if you still want to, all you need to do is remove it from the pot, pull the canes apart and repot the canes separately in smaller pots with new potting soil.

Good luck, and happy gardening.
