Nandina pruning after years of neglect

Fort Payne, AL

I have 2 nandinas that were never pruned. They're approx 4 feet tall and each has about 4 canes. Leaves and berries are, of course, only at the top. Is there any thing I can do or is it too late?

If you cut them off at ground level, they will sprout out and be bushy again. It isn't too late. I had to do this to a huge number of bushes & shrubs when I bought this house. The former owners never shaped or pruned anything, even when they layed on the roof or pushed the electrical lines outta' their way. Some plants cannot be cut like this, so always ask if you are not sure.

Thank you, JuneyBug, will do it today.

Ditto to what JuneyBug said. Nandinas probably respond best to being cut clear to the ground better than any other shrub. Abelias do also. You will LOVE your "new" bushy full nandinas. From now on, (after waiting a few years) cut back the tallest 1/3 of the canes every mid-February. That way you will always have new canes coming along to replace the ones that are getting naked from the bottom up.

Thanks for the information guys. I have the same problem and am glad to know what to do to make them look better.
