Dwarf Meyer Lemon...so talk to me...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hmm... $35.68 with shipping, for a 2 foot tree in a 9 inch pot... that's not bad! I was going to replace my Meyer Lemon with something else... but maybe this is it!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I ordered it when I heard about the fragrant blooms and remembered ya'll talking about it..then posted this thread next day. I figured if someone knew of a better priced one, I'd simply cx my order.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I was hoping for a new citrus tree from DPF, but it looks like there's no citrus shipping out from FL now. I wonder where Roberta's is? Maybe they're figuring the export issue will be fixed by June (estimated shipping date for me if I order).

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

DPF - that's your local one, right? Do you normally get yours from them?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hope they're not one in the same: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/3360/

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Uh oh. I just placed the order (after talking to Jim, who liked the idea of trying this one). I should know to check GWD first, always! I was figuring that any company who had been doing business through QVC for a while now had to be OK, since I doubt QVC wants to deal with repeated complaints from unhappy customers.

QVC has a 30 day "for any reason" return time, but they charge an unspecified "Q return label fee." I suspect that means it'll cost $10 to return it just as it cost $10 to ship it, and I'll be out half the price of the plant. If I get a dead stick, I wonder if QVC would accept a photo for refund purposes in lieu of an actual return?

Should we roll the dice or panic and cancel?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Per QVC's page: Robertas "When you are happy, we are happy. In addition to QVC's 30 day gurantee, Roberta’s assures your satisfaction for its perennials for 1 year and its annuals for 90 days from time of shipment. If for any reason your results don't match your expectations Roberta's will replace it with a similar or comparable plant at no charge. If your replacement is not available or it is too late in the season to ship, it will ship the following season." And here's the ratings on this particular plant: http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.M16671.desc.Robertas-Dwarf-Improved-Meyer-Lemon-Tree-in-9-Pot

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yes, but there are only 3 QVC reviews, and the GWD reviews don't sound like Roberta's guarantee is worth that much since their customer service might be spotty. Maybe we'll just hope for the best -- they do have a few happy customers!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I know...I just finished reading them all....ugh...not sure what to do

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Alrighty...thought I give ya'll THE report...LOL. My babies arrived yesterday and since it's so nice but the sun's not beating down I put them on the porch for some fresh air. Improved Dwarf Meyer to left, Dwarf Kumquat in the middle and the Michelia Skinneriana I'd already rec'd to the right. Soup can at base of lemon for size comparison. Both Citrus were purchased from ebay seller 930sheryl http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190289416374&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D190289416374%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1 - who will hopefully be listing some more items!!! Good size, as you can see, on both of these. I am very pleased - quick ship and careful packing - also VERY quick to respond to messages!! Banana Shrub, as you know, was from Almost Eden.

oopss pic would've helped eh? ^_^

Hooray! I'll definitely have to check that seller out for future listings and will probably place an order with Almost Eden, too. Just got Dmail from Jodi at DPF, and we completely struck out on our list for the FLorida Truck. She apologized and said to check again with the next truck (usually arrives around May 1).

Ok...I understand grafting but this - "3-on-1 Dwarf Citrus Tree Pick oranges lemons tangerines" at only 3-5" high???? Seriously? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160321103961&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Why not? I've seen apple trees with 5 varieties and "fruit salad" trees. As long as the root stock is compatible with all varieties, it should work fine. Might look a little odd with 3 slightly different growth patterns and bloom times etc., but it's a novelty.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I just never imagined grafting something that small - amazing!!! Ohhhh Jilllll....ever heard of an Apple Banana? And is it something I need? I heard wonderful things about the fruit's taste from a friend in Hawaii

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've got one for you if you want it... actually, I have no idea which is which any more, but I have both apple and ice cream banana pups. Apple bananas are indeed delicious! I haven't (yet) tasted an ice cream banana, but it's gotta be good!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

How big do these get praytell before they fruit though? I'm scared...LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

They're not dwarfs. Possibly 12-14 feet... let them fruit in summer, outside!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Holy moly...my ceiling doesn't go quite that high...hmmm...my office does though...LOL

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's a photo of my semi-dwarf Meyers lemon. It is a bumper crop this year - must have over 500 lemons. Been giving them out right and left. I have had to prune quite drastically at times, but have managed to keep it around 4-5 feet tall. It is about 7 years old now. The smell of lemons in the house is heavenly.

And the satsumas are the best mandarins. My mom has a tree that supplies fruit for all of us.

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Soilsandup that lemon tree is an inspiration to all of us.....we can all hope that we get that many lemons. If mine keeps all the buds it has right now it should have quite a few. My fingers are staying crossed.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

How exciting!!! I cant' even imagine the scent of so many blooms!!! Heavenly!!

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks astcgirl and chantell.

Happy spring everyone.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks to Chantell, my buddy and encouraging enabler, I broke down and ordered dwarf orange, meyer, lime and ponderosa - now the ponderosa is nice and big, the others, not so much - when they said "dwarf", they meant it ^_^ (and Kona coffe plants) - so I guess now I have to nurse them to a decent size and hope I can keep them happy and growing this summer ^_^ With any luck they wanna grow up and be big and healthy like the others that I see posted here ^_^

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Awwww no need to thank me really...happy to enable...any ole time

Kannapolis, NC

I think I'm still going to try raising a Meyer lemon from seeds. I just have to make a trip to our not-so-local health food store and buy a lemon.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

i would like to know how raising one from seed comes out...i have always heard that they need to be grafted. no personal experience here tho. i have grown meyers for years (in and out of the house for winter) just for the blooms, which i distill into 'mock' neroli! (scuse the pun)
dabney

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hopefully someone else will chime in here...as I'm painfully clueless about that. Or if you think about it post over on this thread I'd started http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/949865/

Soils, what do you feed that prolific lemon tree? It's beautiful.

Dahlonega, GA

The cut ants strip the leaves every winter off mine in Texas . I buy all the recomended stuff for them , but they keep eating away . Any thoughts on what to do ? Digger

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

KaperC - I am a very hit and miss fertilizerer. Every couple of years or so, I remember to throw in some fertilizer throughout my garden, and it is generally an all-purpose kind -16-16-16 maybe??? It is whatever I have on hand. However, whenever I plant anything, especially a plant that is going to stay put for awhile, I prepare the soil with lots of composted material and that tends to supply the necessary nutrients over a long period of time.

Can't help you with your ant problem, Digger. Is there an extension specialist in your area that can answer that?

Dahlonega, GA

Yes, but so far nothing has worled . They strip a coupla Turks Cap mallows also .

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Soils. You sound like me, but it obviously works better for you! LOL

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

after listening to you all, i went down to HD and brought myself home a meyer lemon...except i'm pretty sure there are two trees in this pot! i don't want to repot it until it finishes blooming, but so far it feels like two truncks way down there!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Good for you...and if you've not been blessed with the scent of these blooms before...you're in for a treat. I've smelled the Ponderosa lemon blooms and woooo -whoooo what a delightful jasmine like scent. My Myer baby has buds on it now!!!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

o no! i've been growing these things for a decade or more Just for the blooms (i distill them) i don't care a whit about the fruit! the meyer i already had is about half way thru it's blooming...i harvest it a couple a times/day.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Then you'll be my go to person for questions!!! I'm just starting out with these babies!!! I'd love to hear the process of distilling them...what do you use it for?

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

i just use water! (google my name and you'll get my web site.) there are folks here that will prob know more about citrus in general than me...but i have learned how to get lots of blooms with the conditions i have. (6b) mine spends the winter in an unheated house with LOTS of windows, for starters.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

First I LOVE that quote...may borrow it if ok with you??? Second...I've got some serious reading to do...
