Dwarf Meyer Lemon...so talk to me...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Please and thank you. I know ya'll have spoke about this little cutie but I didn't give much consideration to a "fruit tree" till I (lame, I know) had QVC on for background noise last night and I heard - amazingly scented blooms... Huh? What? Scented....hmmm????? QVC: "Shipped as a 22"H to 30"H " comes in a 9" deep pot - price: $25.46 plus s/h $10.22 from Roberta's. Any thoughts? Good plant? Good price? Know a vendor you think better?????

Hi Chantell....I was just in the garden yesterday (vacuuming my pathway from leaves) and noticed this sweet smell....low and behold it was my Meyer Lemon in the pot! It really had a nice fragrance. Usually I have to stick my nose into citrus flowers but yesterday it was close by that I could smell it. Plus you can crush the leaves and get another different but equally nice smell. I've had this small Meyer in a pot for the past 2 years and never seen fruit, I bought it at Lowes or HD. I"m not sure if mine is Dwarf or not but it's a really slow grower for me. This is the first year it is totally full of blooms so I'm hopefully it will get lemons. I say get it....LOL. Not sure of any other sources for a Dwarf as I got all 3 of my citrus (Kaffir Lime, Sambo Lemon and Meyer Lemon) from Lowes or HD. Hopefully someone will help you out with a cheaper source but QVC is pretty good and it is on sale Chantell....LOL, fragrance and a sale....who could say no.

ahhh Samantha...thank you...I remembered you all were discussing them at some point but as I said I didn't think I could container grow a fruit tree - unaware there were dwarf versions out there...LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Chantell, you've seen my little potted citrus trees! (OK, so the lemon tree bit the dust, but the key lime is hanging in there.) I think all citrus blooms I've ever smelled were lovely. Some bloom more often than others, though... My lime hasn't fruited in a while (probably needs repotting), but I think key limes and kumquats are more likely to fruit year-round. Lemons (oranges too?) just bloom once a year, I believe.

Does anybody know if kumquats, limequats, and/or Kaffir limes have sweetly fragrant blooms? I'm thinking I might need one of those...

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

I know the Kaffir limes are very fragrant but not sure of the others. I don't like the fruit so I don't grow them, they also make a mess with all the fruit drop (IMO).
Ms Chantell, I thought you didn't like citrus scent?? I remember you had asked about me Mock Lemon (Aglaia odorata) once. If you want a citrus scent thats it! It will do well indoors and out. Once it starts flowering it never seems to stop. It is by far one on my favorites.
Back to the Meyer lemons, they are very fragrant! Mine has not set fruit for me yet but my mom has one that gets crazy with blooms and the fruits are large (like a navel orange size) with the best juice for cooking and lemonade of corse! As for its blooms mine comes in cycles a big bloom in spring and one in late summer and I just had a few blooms that got frosted off last week along with what I thought would be my first lemons.
We also have grapefruit and navel orange trees through out the yard and they all smell wonderful.

I thought it was more the leaves than fruits of the Kaffir limes that people used in cooking... you could enjoy the flowers and leaves and just pluck off the fruits as they form... then again, your trees are probably outside, getting much larger than my potted ones, so that might not be practical!

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Need to clarify... I don't like the kumquats they are the ones that are messy and IMO the fruit is nasty. I guess if you pick the fruit to eat it, it wouldn't be messy lol!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I like kumquats when I (rarely) buy them at the grocery store...

Another consideration might be that Chantell's DGD would be enchanted watching her very own lemon form, grow, and gradually turn from green to yellow... ;-)

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

I have all my citrus in large containers in my front courtyard.
Dwarf Meyer
Limequat (edible rind, but tart little juicy fruit, too)
Lime...can't think of the variety
and Kaffir lime (waiting for it to fruit the first time---it's about 3 years old)

Right now my Meyer and my limequat are covered with ripe fruit.

When they bloom, the fragrance is just heavenly---and concentrated, too, since they're in an enclosed area.

I just bought 3 more citrus varieties from FourWinds to grow in containers.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Aahhh Gilroy, Home of my most favorite festival! When we lived in CA we would always try to make the trip!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok...ok...so I've caved....I guess what I had in my mind as a "citrus" scent isn't necessarily always what it smells like. Clear as mud???? There have been things folks have said had a citrus scent that to my nose didn't smell citrus-y at all....matter-a-fact I LOVED it. Pretty funny eh?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The flowers of citrus trees don't smell citrus-y, themselves... the blossoms have more of a sweet perfume, more like when my little jasmine blooms.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

See, that's what i thought I'd heard someone say...and I'll take ANYthing that smells like jasmine!!!

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

Sweet, but fresh....that's how I'd describe the fragrance.

Yep, Heavinscent----the overwhelming fragrance of Gilroy from about the 4th of July thru November is MARINARA----between the tomatoes and the onions and the garlic being processed!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok...so ya'll have me sold!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just saw a nice big Meyer Lemon tree at Lowe's this week. Now I know I am going back and buy one. Now I need a good satsuma tree for my zone 9a in south Texas.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Gonna have to start stalking my Lowes and HD - most definitely

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

mmmmm Satsuma! Has anyone seen Clementine trees for sale?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

What is a Clementine?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

gessiegail - I have 2 satsuma mandarin trees on order. In Japan they are called Mekans (sp). We would eat those just like candy. I'd buy a 10lb bag and they would be gone by bedtime! I can't wait until they get here!

Darla

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Darla - do they fair well container grown? If so - mind sharing where you purchase yours from?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Please tell us where you did order them? Why can't we get good tangerine trees in the US? That is really what I am calling a satsuma. I have a refrigerator full of them and they are one of my favorite foods.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I don't know about containers, but I'm buying them thru a local nursery. I have them ordered now I just need to wait for them to be delivered. Don't know from whom though.

Darla

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Thank you for the links! Ill LYK if I get one. They are the yummiest little fruits! Like a super juicy and sweet tangerine. Like Darla said a 10 pound bag is gone in no time and they are usually about $6 for a 3 pound box in our walmart.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I foresee a dwarf lemon and Clementine in my future LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Don't fill that new space all at once, Chantell -- enjoy being in a state of "there's room for that!" :-)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

ROTFLOL...oh Jill...you know me well. That "space" hasn't even been emptied yet - but I have to plan around tax returns ya know? And to my defense ^_^ I was ISO of dwarfs...right???? LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

yes, but I know you're only looking for dwarfs (which can still get 6 feet tall I think) so you'll have room for some 8 foot tall bananas. ;-)

*piously* We do have to do our part to spur economic growth.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I feel it my civic duty...and with all the emphasis on going green I look at it being mindful in two important areas...LOL Bananas...that's right...almost forgot while in my "rose" daze...

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Not to be an enabler or anything but there is a Tropical Co-op going on! $1.50 nanners lol!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

ugh....CAREN!!! Sheesh...going ISO of dwarfs...mercy!!!

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

LOL!! They have dwarf nanners!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I just SAW that...PLUS Amazon Lilies (reg & dwarf)...maybe I should post something in a separate thread re those - I believe they've got to reach a certain min with each in order to be able to order it.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Yea, thats the bummer they have to order in full flats.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I'll post a separate thread tonight then just as an FYI - selfish purpose

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Chantell, try to find "Improved Meyer Lemon" I had twice the fruit and it was much sweeter, I have both. Lemon blooms always seem to smell a bit like grape koolaid + jasmine.

Fayetteville, GA(Zone 7b)

violabird, where did you get your improved meyer lemon tree? I live in Fayetteville, GA...just up the road...do you keep it outside? move it out during the summer?

many thx!!'melanie

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Well, hello & welcome to DG Melanie! Don't tell Chantell but I got it Home Depot in Griffin a few years back, just like my regular Meyers and Key Lime. I keep them outside before and after frost an in my sunroom in the winter. The "Improved" goes like an energizer bunny, I didn't think they would be pollinated indoors, but they sure do.

Check your Dmail,
Vi

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

HD? Sheesh!!! I seriously need to move! For those that cant' find it locally - I was able to order the "improved" dwarf through QVC - they might still have some as it was an advance order - not shipping till later.
