The owner of the first pic of Ipomoea Alba Meekerii http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6177630 say that he bought the seeds on this French Link.

Here are the seed picture .

The light seeded strains of Ipomoea alba sometimes produce multi-lobed leaves

http://convolvulaceae.home.comcast.net/~convolvulaceae/Convolvulaceae/Ipomoea_alba/Ipomoea_alba-2_2005-08-15_01-runner.jpg
although much more commonly, the light seeded strains of I.alba produce heart shaped leaves.

The dark brown to dark black seeded strain of Ipomoea alba
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/120337/
usually produces multi-lobed leaves
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/626251/
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/QueenB_1154288135_717.jpg
and has been reported to be more cold hardy than the light seeded strains of I.alba.

The seedpod pedicels of the very dark seeded strains of Ipomoea alba have a pitted texture that is not usually to be seen on the light seeded strains of I.alba as seen here
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/120339/

Pedicels of light seeded strains are smooth in comparison to the 'rough' surface of the dark seeded strains
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/10807/
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/223546/

The light seeded strain may cross with the dark seeded strain to produce an intermediate type and from the looks of the seeds here
http://www.barbadine.com/images/ipalbagraines.jpg
it may be that these represent a cross of the light and dark seeded strains...

The 'Mr.Meeker' thought that he had recently discovered a 'new' dark seeded type and wanted the subtype to be called 'meekeri',but Park seeds was offering both light and dark seeded strains of Ipomoea alba as early as 1931 in their catalog here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3459947

Hope that contributes to clarifying the overall fund of knowledge regarding the light and dark seeded forms of Ipomoea alba...

What a documentation Ron , Thanks

has anyone or is anyone planning using minibar rose as a parent... i'd like some hanging basket types(non climbing) with bigger tie die flowers... preferably in blue.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Colin - I'd thought I should mention that are at least several types marketed as 'minibar rose' and consistency of plant form relative to advertisement photos could get 'glitchy'...

Here are a couple of threads where I and Arlan had shared on the different forms previously

Today I begin my MG affair for spring-summer 2009
First wave of 90 cultivars , up to one's eyes in water ( don't know it's the good expression )
Tomorow on the top of an aquarium of 150 gallons ( 82 ° F ) on wet paper.

Colin - Great thread! Thanks for starting this topic. It's been interesting to read what others are planning to cross this year! :-) Sun Smiles is another MG that is mounding in growth and is great for hanging baskets, as is Kawaii! :-)

Dany - WOW! You aren't joking around, are you?!! LOL!

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I have speckles! Hopefully they will be in different colors like blue, chocolate and pink etc.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Btw, Dany your table is pretty. I notice your plant markers in different colors. Is that to distiguish different species or names? Just curious.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I mean the cotyledons have the classic spots on them. It occurs in a 1 in 10 ratio. They have not bloomed yet. I can`t wait. :)

szarvas, Hungary

Karen, there the colour is not important , everything is good to make tags, even ice cream sticks.Later after soaking when seeds are going on paper I've used the blue colour pencil for the first group of cultivar and also to indicade which place they are in the little glass-boxes . Then the second group is in red , the third in black and next week when I've got more seeds coming from Japan it will be in green

Here was something not really on the control - it split in every directions. WOW !

And the second group with outside the sarcophagus of my Musa Basjoo. First day of Spring , we have good light but the wind is cold.

Here are my notes - in blue so it the first group .So ,for example,I will find four different number "84" in different colour for different cultivar ( it's the Kyusu Method ) LOL
Helena as you can see , your seeds were good quality , a lot of babies !!!!!!
Now I can make previsions , which cultivar go in the garden , in large container , in little ( 2 gallons ) ...
or micro 1 gallon .In fact everything still in the mist , I will see....

Dany, You have lots of beautiful healthy plants on the way! :)

Karen

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Dany - Way cool to see what you are doing!!! You do the same thing that I do ... keep note on a clipboard. I don't number mine, I use the English alphabet - A - Z , then do double letters AA - ZZ. I use numbers for other things ...

How many different cultivars are you growing "total" right now? Looks like a LOT! Where are you going to grow them all?

szarvas, Hungary

group1 : 100 cultivar,group 2 : 118 C. ,group 3 : 71 C. and from Japan 40.
5 different purpurea
The 6 tricolors + 3 Summer Skies ( differents origin ) + 4 Heavently Blue ( different origin)
2 Moonflower alba
And all the seeds from 2008 - Blue Bird, Violet , Gray etc....
Place is not a problem but time ....yes - so : waking in summer before the sun, at dawn I've 2 or 3 hours to make some pics and hand pollinisation.
On the weekend I've an worker to make the strong job.

SOS those person how love wild MG and how grow them ,2009 is a good time to try hybridation Ipomoea Alba with everting coming from every continents.

Colin the message is for you ! LOL
Here is 2 cultivars , they must be the same but one have red legs other green !

Dany, That is how my fujishibori F2 growouts appear. On the green can be seen tiny flecks of color indicating the spots that will appear on the flower. Mine have different shades of spots so I`m so curious now!

See, anybody can do this for a hobby. There is nothing so difficult about it. A little work, patience and good record keeping gets you well on the way.

Karen

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Why do you suppose the Japanese have such great variety? It is because they breed the plants as a hobby. In Japan this is normal stuff.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

OK, I have a speckled baby resulting from a cross of a Fujishibori X (Mt fuji x chocolate large flower) and this is the grandbaby of those two. It was a cross,a selected cross and another cross and another selction. It is the F2! The F1 was apparently another Mount Fuji purple but I found this in the F2. It has speckles up to its ears. I`m so happy.

Ooooh, that looks like a winner... be sure to post photos.

I got a one too that speckled, but mine are crosses from 2007 that I did not get to grow out. Chocolate Picotee x 1010 (white speckled playcodon star shaped) and it is on it's third leaf.. this year is going to be something, hopefully some of my F2s do something this year. This one is growing really stiff and straight up with the I. nil leaves, not the Ten Ten leaves and the leaves are directly across from each other, they are not staggard.

Mesilla Park, NM

Dany, have you started to transplant yet? I was wondering if it is any more troublesome with flats like the ones you have going... compared to single cups... I started three flats with 72 cells each but they are the huge 3 inch cells, and I sure don't know if I can keep them in there too long, before they start to climb onto each other. This is the first time I grow my seedlings like this.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

I`m exited that more people are breeding because that means More beautiful flowers!!! :)

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Gourd, I know you didn`t ask me but they should be fine whether in cells or flats if you plant them by the time they start getting a few true leaves. The sooner the better as usual. In spring it is not really extremely hot yet so transplanting is easier and less stressful on the seedlings.

The solid leaf is dominant to the variegation. They can carry for variegation and it can come back again. I`m curious how the inheritance goes with the ten ten speckled since you can`t see any spots on the cotyledons. I have some pure green cotyledons in my Fujishibori grow outs too. So,I`m very curious and can`t wait to see what happend next.

Mesilla Park, NM

Happy Easter Everyone... and have a great weekend!

Karen, your babies here are getting leaves too... it will be nice to see other's crosses also, Becky has been coming out with some nice ones.

Some of my Fuji Shibories have both, variegated cotyledons and solids... all the ones from Onalee's have variegated.. and huge cotyledons, mine have both. I think that it will still produce the specks on the flowers though. I also had solid leaves and variegated on them last year.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Happy Easter! This is going to be exiting seeing all the new things people have been hiding up their sleeves all winter. :)

Mesilla Park, NM

ooops, I forgot to say thank you for the Info..

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Right, I also think it is probable that the variegation and speckled color patterns are inherited separately and independently from one other.

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Your welcome. :)

I don`t think of it like I`m informing so to speak. For me it is way to express how much I love my garden. The plants constantly amaze me and I have to talk about them. :)

Gautier, MS

I've been watching a seedling that I have of a solid chocolate that has these little stripes going up thinking that it's not going to be a solid chocolate.

you won't know till it blooms, sometimes they appear as splotches, which only makes them look blotchy, there is another one called Kai no Kasumi that came out with specks and ticks.. I really want to see that one and cross that with some others.

szarvas, Hungary

I grow 30 flats with 24 cells and 12 flats with 42 cells. They grow well but still in the green house . They still number on paper but in one second I can identify -ex : fllat number 14 , second line is ....
This week end is a long week end . BIG BIG job in the garden !
I bild 3 fences ( 3 X 50 ' long and 8 ' hight ) for the vines.
Rare cultivars will grow in containers .

I need and army of bees in summer !

I have more than 10 wheelbarrows of canna bulbs for the garden .
Somebody can help me ?
Dany
No time to graft MG.

Thumbnail by dany12
(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I wanna know ... how do you actually "graft" a MG onto a sweet potatoe plant???? Anyone know?

Dany - I did my math and I counted 1224 minimum of seedlings that you are starting in your flat cells!!! Is 150' total length of fencing going to be long enough for all of these vines? Or are you growing other plants in the flat cells beside vines? And are you planning to go into the seed/plant selling business? It sure looks like you are off to a good start if that is the case!

All the speckles, spots, and stripes on the stems of the seedlings ... sure do make anticipation of what the blooms will produce very exciting!

szarvas, Hungary

Becky don't stress me !

There are more possibilities
- With sheep treillis I make tube of 6 ' hight
- bamboos
- bean net in plastic
- I have 12 brugmansia , they accept the compagny of MG
- I have a lot of fences but not so higt.

The problem is the purpurea volontiers
And the second is to take a young plant from the green house directly outside - the sun will not burn them ? It's good to wait a raining week !
I'll find a solution - no problem.For sure i'will produce MIX seeds !

Blue Team
