planning crosses for 2009

Hi Dany/everyone...

i'm planning on crossing fujishibori with fuji no mine... i want to keep the speckles and combine the 'spoke' effect of fujishibori
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/77102/
with the real spokes of fuji no mine
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/171362/
... sort of doubling the effect if you like :-)

i plan on crossing the f1 generation back to fujishibori first... as i think this might help with keeping the speckles and flower size... and then selfing the best of those....

what are you planning?

Colin

edited for spelling...

Colin and Dany, those 2 strains are to die for whose photos you posted above.

Very big fish to try to land!

Hey Colin,
Check this one out.
One of mine with no name yet from 2007 -
Looks much like this JMG don't you think!
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6102056
But it is not.

'Black King', I did grow AND grew 'Purple Rain' Neither was anything like it was supposed to be. Both seeds from Japan

Thanks Ronnie,
Photo just doesn't do this one justice.
It was just awesome. and blooms were huge

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

It is a beauty, great color.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

oh my goodness that is beautiful!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Lovely vine and bloom, Emma!

Colin - Good luck with your future cross! I hope you get exactly what you are hoping for! :-)

I haven't decided on any crosses yet for this growing season. Though I have some ideas that I am tossing around in my head... :-)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks everyone,
Emma

(Zone 7a)

Love your dusky lavender-purple, Emma. Am trying to imagine Colin wreaking his speckly magic on Black Knight, so that there's a rain of ivory speckles upon the dusky night - like the inverse of Fujisibori. Throw in some spokes, and we'd have a galaxy of stars, for sure :)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you bluespiral -
Just something about those 'Speckles' isn't it!
I will be growing a lot of Blue Speckled this year of different cultivars.
Some straight from Japan.

Colin's Fujishibori x Fuji Mine sounds like an awesome MG. I did a lot of Fujishibori crossing in 2007 but haven't grown them all out yet. So many!
And, actually I DO have this one - for a fact:
"like the inverse of Fujisibori. Throw in some spokes"
I crossed my Plum Frost x Fuji no Mine that looks exactly like Plum Frost with Spokes.
I'll have to dig out that photo. so awesome!
AND, did many crosses of Fujishibori x Fuji no Mine and other of the Fuji's as well.
Again, haven't grown them out yet.

Fujishibori is great to cross with.

Emma your Purple Rain only marvellous ! I love it
Here is an other pic of Black King from Japan where we can see the tube .

Thumbnail by dany12

thanks all... i like your description bluespiral... imagineering at it's very best...

..... the purple rain looks so nice Emma .... perhaps if it was crossed with hama no murasaki, you could introduce a darker eye... getting it nearer to Dany's pic of black king!?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Dany and Colin,

A really nice color on that JMG Dany. . .

Yes, Colin, I agree with your thoughts on my MG and I must play with it this year and see what I can get it to do. It really is a Beauty!

emma the purple rain is just lovely as it is... i hope it keeps comming true i just love the darker colours...

shame about the black king not comming through like it was supposed to be :-( especially as the seeds came from japan!

i think i will try crossing one flower hama no murasaki with your coco chocolate and see where that goes...

i'd love to see the results of any fujishibori crosses you growout :-) the lighter star on fujishibori seems to be along the folds of the flower... whereas the ray white markings are midway between the folds.... i'd like to see what that looks like together :-)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Colin,

I have a couple of other seeds from Japan that are dark Purple tones that I have not yet grown. So, just need to see what all I can squeeze in this year.

Yes, the Hama no Murasaki x Cocoa Chocolate sounds interesting for sure.

I will be sure to LYK first what any of my Fujishibori crosses produce. Something interesting should come from at least some that I crossed, just need to grow them out. I am especially looking forward to seeing my Fujishibori x Fuji crosses. Another I think I will grow out this year that I crossed is a Pink Kawaii x Fujishibori. How neat would that be to see a speckled creeping-type.

It seems like there's a system for maintaining the king....

From the site: Roppongi leaves.

What are they? I can't find any literature on these online even on the yellow morning glory as posted on the site. ..

i need to check the threads ... dany posted a link that lead to it(where i got the pic) i think, not long ago Eliz

a speckled kawaii type is sounding good :-)

That's beautiful...

My plans for crossing (provided I can grow these vines outdoors during summer =/):

Following Dr. Yoneda's descriptions...
Blue Asagao Willow x Bamboo leaf (http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/PCD2523/htmls/07.html) producing filamentous willow (when I say "produce" in my response here, it means that it may produce that, because there will be other types of leaf/bloom forms that will be produced like it may just produce willow leaf or some other form of willow leaf...)

On ray flow crossings http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/PCD2521/htmls/40.html
akatsuki no yume x chachamaru
chachamaru x akatsuki no yume
akatsuki no yume x maisugata
maisugata x akatsuki no yume
akatsuki no yume x various mt. fuji
keiryu x maisugata
maisugata x keiryu

I would like to try and cross various mt. fujis and youjiro just to see, even though it says on his website that he crossed youjiros with blizzards =)

Dai x Willow Dianthus http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/PCD2523/htmls/34.html
Dr. Yoneda did not specifically say which cultivars/types he crossed, but from here, we can see that the genes that are carried by nidozaki are crepe and duplicate. We will need to cross a dai with something that carries for the duplicate gene...which will be willow dianthus.

Cameo elegance x gray fog (or any type of gray blooming flowers)
perhaps an introduction of chocolate or grays into the princess types? Idea sparked from atenkly's introduction of blue blooms on princesses (I'm not kept up to date with this, I'm not sure if he got this one stabilized)

Kikyo x Oreheme (or any white blooms with a tinge of red at the throat)
white star flower would be nice with a contrasting red throat...like dracula =)

Have lots more i wrote in a scrap paper, I just don't know where it went lol.

Those japanese seeds are not going to come here anytime soon, so I think it's a great idea that there's initiative to create and recreate (try) some things here in north america and europe......

They have the real BLACK ..... but the pansy !

Love those blacks, too, Dany - they do leave me senseless. But, then, evr's crosses re-activate the thinking part of me, along with expanding my appreciative powers. All the potential beauty here along with food for thought is quite a winter feast. Thanks, All.

I suggest to people , fans of native ipomoeas with a large collection trying to hybridize of the Moon Flower ( ipomoea Alba ).

ps : I'm looking for seeds of the second version of ipomoea Alba with palm leaf and black seeds - let's make a trade ( Dmail )
Dany
Here ie Benkei - dark redish-purple

Thumbnail by dany12

I may try crossing Ethiopia with a different strain of Ipomoea obscura to see what comes of it. I was trying to germinate seeds I collected from the Bone Yellow strain of I. obscura but I had 3 duds in succession and I grew afraid I didn't have a viable seed in the lot of seeds I collected last year, and believe me it wasn't a lot of them!

Joseph - Germination factors reconsidered sent via private dmail...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Dany I have some Ipomoea albivenia, is that what you are looking for? oh I see it is not.. well I have some if anyone wants any LOL

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, I would love to have a few albivenia, sending you a dmail.

Finally I find the name of the Moonflower cultivar with " palm " leaf : it's Ipomoea Alba Meekerii
Here is a pic

Thumbnail by dany12
Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

The dark seeded form of Ipomoea alba is entered in the PlantFiles here
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/120341/

The designation of 'meekeri' is not a legitimate recognized appellation and apparently a non-subscribing member has entered several photos to the entry which show no indication of being from the dark seeded form...
