Can anyone give me any thoughts on whether the primrose plant, tulips and daffodils are truly toxic to cats. I found this info on a cat website but the list of toxic plants was endless so I thought maybe someone else had some info. thanks
toxic to cats
I've definitely heard before that daffodils are toxic--not sure about the others but there are a lot of toxic plants out there so unless you have some reason to doubt the credibility of that particular site then it's probably safe to assume that they are at least somewhat toxic. The degree of toxicity of different plants can vary though and that's something that can be a bit harder to track down. However, since cats are pretty small and smaller animals require a lower dose of a poisonous substance to cause problems, then if your cat is into eating greenery I wouldn't take chances with anything that even might be toxic if it's an area that the cat can get to.

Boy ! That's a pretty hefty list !
Like ecrane, I've always heard that daffodils are toxic but I've never heard of the others being a problem. I have three cats who all like to sample my houseplants and each Christmas they relearn that poinsettia foliage is not tasty. And although they feel the need to sample everything, I've never had a problem with any "toxic" plant, including the highly poisonous Dieffenbachia which my boy cat nearly defoliated because he kept going back for more! Off of the list above I know they have eaten on Amaryllis, Bleeding Heart Dracaena, Peace Lily, Pothos, at the very least.
They usually eat a few leaves, spit it up and hopefully learn their lesson. It is a good idea to keep a close eye on them if you know they've eaten something they shouldn't have (especially if they are young, old or sickly) but I try not to let supposed toxicities worry me too much.
I don't think that they mean these plants are instantly deadly, what I am assuming they mean is that over time if your cat continues to eat on them, they will slowly build toxins in their systems. A lot like giving your dog grapes or onions. One alone will not kill them, but eating them over and over causes toxins to build and eventually will be very harmful to them if not deadly. A lot of the plants listed above are also listed as being toxic to dogs, again ingesting them repeatedly over time.
The problem with plant lists like these is there is no telling what is REALLY a problem versus what is just some what-irritating. For example if your cat ate a Euphorbia, it would probably puke a few times and that would be that. If it ate a bite of diffenbachia, it would undoubtedly drool for a while, and that would be that. No cat could possibly eat more than that, but if somehow it could, it would be a lot sicker. However, Lily-like plants and bulbs, such as Daffodils, are quite toxic to cats. It does not take that much eating to make a cat very ill with these plants, and they are not as noxious as those other two, so cats are much more likely to be made toxic from them.. and these can cause severe kidney failure. However, saying that, they still don't taste good and few cats will actually eat enough to do any serious damage, save for some Lily species that are so poisonous that swallowing just one bit can make them extremely ill. I am a veterinarian and in 22 years I don't think I have seen more than 3 or 4 seriously ill cats from eating a poisonous plant.
Now dogs are a completely different matter as dogs eat everything, and often won't stop just because something tastes horrible. Cats just aren't that crazy.
very toxic, dont even let leaves or flowers fall in their drinkwater.thankfully they kill rats too[they struck my lillies this year]
Now I know why I'm not a cat owner. If you are concerned about your cat, why allow it outside. Cats do not have to be outside. My daughter's and my son's cat never have seen the outside of the house and they are just as happy---and safe. I would worry more about a cat or dog getting hit by a car.
The long list of toxic plants don't leave a gardener many choices to plant.
Like blomma, I would worry about cats outdoors. Cats can wander quite far so even if you don't plant these, I'd be willing to bet that they are already in someone else's yard in your cat's territory. I'm not presently a cat owner but know that there are plenty in our neighborhood. I wouldn't think of not planting things in my own yard to keep other folks tabbies safe. Not that I'd wish them harm, I just wouldn't think of it. And, on the other side, I don't check to see what's toxic to dogs either...I have two:-)
