Need ideas for broken trellis

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

This is a collage of the now broken trellis (posts in cement) on the right and something I saw at a local nursery on the left.

I'm sure we could use the look but wonder if it would block too much of the garden. Of course, the trellis didn't allow for any view through it so maybe I shouldn't be concerned.

Any other interesting thoughts?

still thinking...still thinking...

Pirl, are you saying it would be a change if we came up with something interesting?

I love that window in the fence. Jose recently built a fence for the new neighbors next door, closing off the entire back yard to keep the dog from wandering. He added a little window just like that one at dog-eye level so Happy could keep an eye on things in front.

I saw these at a nursery last year.

LOL Sue. Looks familiar. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/382506/

They are so clever. I bet it would look so cute in Pirl's yard.

They used to have great mail boxes as planters too and even doors with stoops with color coordinated combo pots - - all in bright colors. I have pictures somewhere on discs. I was just there the other day and things are looking a bit sad.

Zuzu - I made the change to my first post. My intent was "change" that would be interesting for the placement of the trellis but I saw how it may have looked from the reader's point of view. Thanks.

Thanks, Sue, for the great photos. They're all so attractive. There are tall plants in front and in back of it so I won't be able to use the window box look but I can use the window look.

Thanks, Kell.

JD - any ideas yet?

Love the windows

This isn't a great photo but it does show some of the lilies and dahlias (with broccoli) growing on the terrace side of the trellis.

In the back there are tall white phlox and many tall lilies.

nice combo ,dahlias with brocolli.
I'm sorry I dont have an idea for that spot.

That broccoli was harvested from August through December and there are a few more side shoots I could still use if I wanted to risk breaking bones on the ice covered terrace.

DD wants to put in Vedgs. I'll suggest it.

We had broccoli in with the dahlias and in the vegetable garden but the ones I planted with the dahlias were so much closer to the kitchen door and I could keep up with them much easier.

The lettuce in the rose garden was pure delight!

I knew what you meant, Pirl. I was just being silly.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, I did know what you meant. If I hadn't changed it maybe others would have been offended and I think we had enough of that two weeks ago elsewhere on DG!

My thoughts precisely.

Sue , that window effect is wonderful and giving me some ideas!

Pirl, I have no ideas for you. Wait, maybe I do. A few, maybe more than a few years ago, I planted a bunch of MG seeds against the fence. I wanted to cover that ^%%*#^@ fence. I was very new to gardening and I had to use my own noodle to figure out a support system for the vines. I went to a bait store and bought fishing line. I strung the string top to bottom of the fence in a zig zag fashion. It worked great. I think I'll do it again this year as I had a delusionary moment recently and bought some MG seeds. I would not suggest this for perennials though.

I still find some MG seedlings every spring. It's been well over 8 years since I originally planted them.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

If MG seeds were sterile I'd have them in a lot more places. We were still finding them last year after three years of not having any on a tuteur. Now, from what you said, we have a few more years to go. I've heard those seeds are viable for 80 years. I'll have to return from the grave to get them!

Venu is right-on about using fishing line. I used to use it a lot for sweet peas. It's practically invisible and lasts a long time outdoors.

Luckily the MG seedlings pull out easily though. I am going to throw caution to the wind and grow some od the fancy Japanese varieties this year. I have found in the past that only the most common reseed and the prettiest never seem to here.

I can't wait to see what you pick, Pirl.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Neither can I, Kell.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

That's what I did Kell, using the same thought process.
