I just started my first SFG bed this week and planted 8 broccoli and 9 kohlrabi plants. Next to the broccoli I planted a tomato plant - and plan to put two more tomatoes in soon. A few minutes ago I read that tomatoes won't do good next to the Brassica family. I'm so disappointed! Does anyone have firsthand experience with this?(hopefully disproving this info)
Will tomatoes grow next to broccoli and kohlrabi?
I don't have firsthand experience...though I will say that I have a potager which is basically a mixed kitchen garden...no rows. Everything is next to everything. Though I try to crop rotate and keep companion plants together.
Companion plants will help other plants grow and do better. When you read to keep plants away from each other...I don't think it means the plant in question won't grow at all. It just might not grow as well...you'll get less yield.
Here's a site that has a chart:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_companion_plants
Cabbage family members--brassicas are heavy feeders and prefer to come to harvest in cool weather. The tomato is also a heavy feeder but must come to harvest in very warm weather. So the brassicas and tomatoes are a bad match on two fronts: they both will heavily compete for soil nurtients and they come to harvest in differing temps. You could succession crop them one after the other, kale and broccoli coming to harvest early or late in the season with tomatoes in between. But you still have the nutrition to worry about--so you should give them all compost tea to keep up their strength. Perhaps plant them in two different square foot (intensive) beds.
