trying to plan a rose garden

Troy, NY(Zone 5b)

I am very new to gardening and I really want to plant a rose garden along one fenceline in my back yard. My mother gave me a very old fashion rose cutting last year before she moved and much to my surprise it took. It is very small but if it grows like hers it will be a large tall bushy pink rose that blooms once per season (I have no idea what it is called)

I planted some minatures in front of it last summer and they have done well too. This year I would like to add climbing roses and clematis and more minatures. My neighbor has an ugly chain link fence that I want to cover and give my yard more privacy.

How long will it take for the climbing roses to fill out and grow?

Should I plant the clematis between the climbers or closer to them?

Any help would be appreciated.

Morning, Bookreader: You might like to post this question on the roses forum where all the rose experts hang out. You'll get plenty of help and input there.

Good luck. Sounds like you're off to a great start. Be warned: the roses thread leads to serious rose addiction!

Climbing roses can grow and fill in very quickly if they get at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight. Usually by their second year in the ground they really takeoff.
If roses typically have disease issues in your area, I wouldn't plant the clematis too close. If they grow together it will decrease the air circulation around the foliage and possibly lead to problems with blackspot and powdery mildew (although being on a chain link fence will help with this problem.

If the roses will be climbing through your neighbors fence, please let them know ahead of time. I would hate to see your hard work and money go down the drain if they decided that they do not want things growing on the fence. I speak from experience, and it is no fun having to cut down all those beautiful roses.

I appreciate the input. My neighbor is fine with anything growing on the fence. I have morning glories on the front section and I figured I would try roses on this back area.

I am learing I have to be patient and wait for things to get bigger and fill in but I really didn't want to wait 3 years or so for roses to fill in. If roses will take off next year I would be thrilled. The yard is sunny all day (I think that is why the other roses I have there have done so well)

As for becoming a subscriber I think I need to be signing up. This will be my first spring planting (did some last summer and fall) and I really need help with planning. My husband is already laughing when each new catalogue arrives and want to know just how much I think I can fit in the yard.

one important thing for your climber...do not prune it for THREE years..deadheading of course but do not cut the limbs.

Bookreader, you really should think about signing up. I'm a fairly new gardener, too, and I have learned so much from DG. I'm addicted. It's nice to communicate with others who understand plant addiction and the big stacks of seed and plant catalogues that get read over and over again!

I've been gardening for years but just joined DG & already it is money well spent..I love the threads & am watching quite a few. Some really great people to talk to also!!
