I read to plant cosmos seeds in "open ground" does this infer the ground does not have to be worked?
I have an ounce of cosmos seeds to plant this year. Can I just plant the seeds into the hard sod?
They would get pretty good sun +8 hrs. I could germinate them first and transplant in April.
thanks,
rob s.
Cosmos
I think when they say "open ground", they mean sow the seed directly where you want them to grow, as opposed to starting the seeds in trays or liners and then transplanting them elsewhere.
It would be better if you did "work" the soil before you plant them, though. Hard soil is difficult for their tiny roots to penetrate when they are seedlings.
Cosmos are pretty easy to grow and not fussy about soil, so I would at least loosen the soil to about 6" minimum.
Good answer, but I think it also means ground that gets sun as opposed to ground under trees and other growth that would block the sun.
Never thought of that. Good point !
