help with winter protection of thunbergia

Porterville, CA

I have had my thunbergia for two years and it has grown to about 6ft by 5ft. I never put anything over the vine for two years, but this winter it has started to die back by about 40%., so I decided to put some burlap over it and after 4 weeks it has died back another 20%. I am now wondering if I should take the burlap off or leave it on!!! I live just south of Fresno, California (town of Porterville) and the temperatures do not get below 30 degrees F., however, I know my vine is suppose to take temps down to 32, so I am really on the spot as to what to do. So far, this year we only went down below 32 one time and that night it was at 31. We still have another month of temps that are suppose to get only down to the mid 30's. Daytime temps get to mid 60's. I am not too experienced with gardening, so can anyone tell me if I am killling my vine by keeping the burlap on it until March????

This is just sad. No one has responded to your post yet and you've been waiting 10 hours. I don't grow Thunbergia, so I can't answer your question, but I noticed this thread in the Vines and Climbers Forum and it has some information about protecting Thunbergia from the frost.

Zuzu, Thank you for the information. I guess there are not too many gardeners that grow Thunbergia. I have seen and looked at a lot of your postings over the past year and I might have known a person like yourself would ansewer my request for help, so I wasn't too worried. Thank you.

Zuzu has such a kind heart.
