What's Happening in YOUR Neighborhood # 13

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks Betty! Sometimes that is becoming an issue here -a local obedience/rally trainer is also a CKC/CARO judge and she has had to stop judging because so many of her pupils are competing!

Well - interesting things happening here - a Superstore was closed down yesterday by health authorities because of a mouse infestation ( noted because of a consumer complaint!) Apparently there was another customer who actually saw mice but didnt complain - just decided not to shop there anymore! They have to clean the whole store! Which means taking everything off the shelves and cleaning every shelf in the store and of course all other areas too! Can you imagine - what a job!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I think since the City has implemented Cat licensing and bylaws, most people don't let their cats outside. I think the mouse population has become out-of-control in Calgary. What a waste of food product for that store if the mice got into it.

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Someone in the Pet forum had an interesting and valid point and explanation as to why the owners that know that there will be a "Conflict of Interest", still want to bring their Best of Breed winners into the group ring mainly to get credit for winning and also to represent that particular Breed in the Best of Group. That seems reasonable to me.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Don that's exactly what Sharon said...to be able to say your dog won Best of Breed is enough...at least for than entry year...

Store in Toronto closed for same reason a few weeks ago...hadn't thought of the cat situation, but yes, know Riley and Missy are hunters, perhaps I'd best give them more treats, just the thoughts of a mouse yikes..

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Hmmmm, not to mention the poor cats ending up with worms and other parasites from eating those disgusting little creatures.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

WOW .. great info .. makes sense to me now :-)

AKkkkkkkkkkk .. Mice and Cats .. good lord .. I have had to dose Smokey twice since last April with Droncit (dewormer) not only him .. but Lilly as well ... PLUS .. Smokey LOVES to let us SEE what he has caught .. the joys of country living YUK !!!

Hi all, just catching up on all the posts over the past month, I have been WAY too busy teaching, playing CPO, and running my new string program. And now here comes the Kiwanis festival, it is going to get busier!

I have to say, just glancing through, this must be the friendliest forum ever. It is a happy place, from weather to dogs to inspirational thoughts. Thanks for all the posts. And I still want autographs from Les and Carol who are now famous Calgarian gardeners. Theresa

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Theresa I am thinking it is time for another Fools get together since April lst is coming up.I'll send out a group email soon. We can have an autograph party!

Have you seen this? Pretty neat!

Awesome idea Carol - some of us haven't seen each other in quite awhile...time to have a little party for sure... :)

Amazing that it's been two years already since we got our little group together.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Only thing is April lst is a Wed. Weekend is Garden Show
We would have to do it 29th ( Sunday before) or weekend after. Assuming of course that people might want to be at the Garden Show on the 5th.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Blizzard day here..depressing really after all that nice weather..was just tempting us..know I'm going home to a flood tonight, there had to be 2 ft of water at the base of the house..guess I'll spend my lunch at the Garden Gallery..need to be spring cheered...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

What would we do if our weather weren't so changeable LoL

Schools were closed Tues and Wed out here in the country due to treacherous snow conditions .. and now it's gently snowing and has been doing so most of the day.
I see by the news that Toronto has had major amounts of rain causing probs with lots of city services.

DEPRESSING news here in Thunder Bay and in another small community (Marathon) east of us by about 400mi on the shores of Lake Superior. 2 paper mills are closing .. 200 out of work in Marathon, and close to 700-1000 here in Thunder Bay .. and .. NO termination pay or severance packages !!! Huge uproar underway ..

Haven't heard if the Public school teachers in Ont have voted to strike ,, they apparently had til 1pm to accept the Govt's offer .. gads !! What a world ..........

Saw my doc today and will be getting fit for a Carpal Tunnel Splint for my left wrist :-( I refuse to have the surgery .. not many of them are successful ,, and .. as my right hand and wrist are already compromised .. I think it best to grin and bear it .. hopefully the splint will help me at night as i sometimes waken in excruciating pain .. in fact .. 2 nights ago .. I went outside around 2am and stuck my left hand and wrist into a snowbank .. it worked quite well .. then I scooped up some snow and put it in a ziploc bag and sat for a bit just waiting for the nerves to settle down.
Anyone who has this problem has my heartfelt sympathies. 8 out of 10 registered nurses are afflicted.

Hope you aren't in too much trouble when you get home Betty. I sent my best bud a bouquet of pink and yellow tulips today. She had rotator cuff surgery yesterday .. am hoping the tulips will cheer her up .. they are just beautiful .. made me smile fer sure ..

I'm off

Not good news in TB!

Marily do you have any gel packs that you can keep cold? I have several that I keep in the freezer to haul out when I have a migraine. They are very cold and not all that big but big enough to rest your hane/.wrist on. Might be a better solustion than going into the snow at 2 am. And they stay cold longer and dont melt!

A bit colder here but sunny seems to be a nice day out. Quick doctors appointment to get result of a bunch of lab tests she ordered and my annual mammogram. All normal ( no problems anyway) Arranged to have some growths removed from back and chest next week ( cant remember name - those ugly brown things , crusty and itchy -so many of us get - they just grow on the skin and I usually have them frozen off (although this doc prefers to excise them. ) Also having a little growth removed from my face which bugs me - she will send that one for biopsy just in case!

And making arrangements for a new dog coming to me from Edmonton on Saturday - found abandoned, malnourished , frozen ear tips and nose, teeth in terrible shape, said to be about 13 yrs old! Dont know how much we will be able to do but we will try to help her.

Victoria Harbour, ON

"M" just hate listening to the news or reading a paper..so many are being affected..it's heartbreaking for sure...

You must be in mega pain 'M' to be going outside at that time of morning for relief..Suzanne whom I work with has had it done, she still has some difficulty but says it's much better...now June, a friend of mine had surgery infact ended up with metal to replace some of the damage in her arm..she says it's ok but each and every time she's over painting I see her holding her wrist...

Guess the answer is putting it off as long as you can possibly do without further injuring yourself...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Yep .. I have the gel packs, and the bean bags, and always keep a bag of frozen peas on hand if needed .. the night I went outside I just couldn't stand the thought of moving things around in the freezer of my side by side to get at the gel pack .. rectified that situation right smartly !!

I think the 'moles' you're talking about Carol are called NEVI .. best to have them removed .. pretty quick and efficient.
GAWD you just reminded me .. I haven't had my Mammies Grammed for a couple of years !!!

I agree with you Betty re reading the newspaper/listening to the news .. NOT for the faint of heart for sure .. some mornings I have to almost DARE myself to go to our local papers website .

Have known several colleagues who had the carpal tunnel surgery and really found not a HUGE difference .. so .. am gonna hang in ..
Soon as it starts getting in my way of typing on my keyboard ... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzoooooooooooommmmm .. SURGERY !! LOL

Off to get supper on the go ..

Marrilynne
The night time splints help tons! I don't have a huge problem just a bit in the summer when I'm in the garden too much. My Dad suggested that I wear my inline skate wrist guards for the night as they were waking me up. It worked!
Anyway I can sympathize with the lay off folks, at least I got a package after 32 years.
My Mammies were grammed and I happen to live 1 block from the Breast Center so that makes things easy.
We are colder now but the sun she is a shining and the blue sky is amazing.

Carol you are a doggie angle for sure. I know she will be in good hands when she gets to you.
Cheers for now.

M. no it is sebacious something cant remember the 2nd word - they are no big deal just rather unsightly - I remember as a teenager and young adult I hated wearing swim suits because if had them all over my back. Was not until I was in my 40's that I discovered they could be easily removed by freezing them - they just drop off!

Just got word our sad little abandoned dog will not becoming down this weekend but staying wth our foster family in Edmonton until she finishes her anitbiotics and then will re-evaluate what needs to be done.

I keep my gel packs in the door shelf of my fridge/freezer so always easy to get hold of even in the dark!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

TSN showing Westminster right now ( 7pm in Calgary) Terrier group, non sporting coming up and herding in 60 mins.

Added: Well I know we already knew results but I saw Betty's sister dog Inuk this evening in the non-sporting competition. Lovely dog! And I have to admit I cant stand the hair cut those French Poodles have. I know there were reasons for the style but it seems to be so exagerated I think they just look silly.

Disappointed the sheltie got nowhere but pleased the Puli won in the herding group.
Loved the B. Terverun. We have dogs of most of those breeds competing in agility here.

Just checking in to say Hi. I've been busy too. Nice to see Theresa back. She will understand when I say that Sorcerer's Apprentice has been keeping me busy. Combined with La Mer and Pacific 231 all on one program. Plus a couple of violin and orchestra pieces - Tzigane (Ravel) and Poème (Chausson). Yikes!

Theresa - tell us more about your string program. And is your Kiwanis Festival this early? Wow! Ours doesn't get started until April.

Ann

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

SHOOT ... am hoping the Westminster will re air this weekend as I missed it last night.
I hear ya on the type of cut the Standard Poodles get .. I oft times wonder if they're embarrassed...LOL.. course I KNOW they don't KNOW any better, but, one does wonder.
The Bedlington Terrier is the one that creeps me out .. I would love to see one 'let go', am imagining they would bear a great resemblance to a Sheep Dog !! The Dandy Dinmont is also really 'Froo Frooed' ^_^
Ahhhhhhhh .. but their owners love'em just the way they are .. outward appearance says nothing for the hearts of these dogs ..

Am with my Hospice client this morning as she has 3 units of blood .. takes a bit o time and I'll just go and sit with her for a few hours (2) .. then it'll be off to fight the crowds to pick up a couple of Valentines Cards .. PLUS .. I just realized today is FRIDAY the 13th !!!!!!!

ViolaAnn .. do you ever have problems with Carpal Tunnel ? With all the music you play I would think your wrist must get uncomfortable at times ?
I have yet to get the splint .. remember .. my middle name is PROCRASTINATION !!!

I best get a bustle on .. TGIF

Waving to you all..

Wasn't feeling the best when I got home so straight to bed..drats, if I catch that intestinal flu I'll have a word or 2 for Paul and Suzanne who came in ill the past few weeks...

Tummy still rolling but I'm ok

Woke up last night just shy of midnight and news came of the plane crash in Buffalo, couldn't get back to sleep...how tragic...

Slept in this am so on the move..
Talk when I get to the office

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Good morning,

Marilynne - so far no problems with carpel tunnel though I know some musicians who are affected. But I've had my share of shoulder aches and pains.

Friday the 13th, we generally go out to dinner as our first date was on a Friday the 13th. Guess we won't today though as we've got our grandson overnight and I have an overnight guest arriving around midnight at the airport. We are having a Canadian Viola society executive meeting here tomorrow since two of them are involved in the hart House Orchestra which is doing a benefit concert tomorrow evening.

The president will drive in from Montreal and we decided to bring one person from BC. It's rather unusual to get this group together and there is still one missing since she's been touring overseas with La La La Human Steps.

Betty - I hope you avoid that intestinal flu. It's no fun at all.

My aquafit group has breakfast-brunch the second Friday of each month. Will have to decide if I'm going to aquafit first. Might skip it and do some practicing instead (I DID go to aquafit yesterday).

Hope you all have a great day.

Bit of snow here today. Hopefully the roads will be ok since we are traveling to the farm for the weekend. I was going thru some pictures from last summer and thought I would share this one taken on our camping trip at Emma Lake in Northern Saskatchewan.

Marilyn TSN has the 2nd part of Westminster listed for next Thursday starting ( here) at 530pm.

Drive carefully Joanne!

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Joanne
We are headed to Red Deer for a competition for DD. I'm happy that it's not too far but your drive will be a long one.

As far as poodles go my standard would be way embarrassed to have a froofy hair cut.
We just do the same all over and she is fine with that. In the summer she looks like a grey hound with curly black hair so none of the fancy stuff here.

We are overcast today and no wind so that is a good thing.
Betty hope your tummy settles down that flu is no fun at all.
Ann.. wow do you ever keep yourself busy!

Ann ( the other one)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Annabell52,

I called about my seed order & it shipped Tuesday. It wasn't in today's mail, so probably Monday. I will be sending you the amaranthus as soon as I receive the Dam order...that's William Dam.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Betty .. I sure hope your 'rumbly tummy' episode passed ... NOT FUN !!!!! Bug sharers can be annoying fer sure ..

Carol .. thanks so much for the info re the Westminster Show .. I'll see if I can get it .. I know one of the satellites has TSN on it ..

Ann .. glad you aren't affected with carpal tunnel .. my best buds neice who is studying viola in London Eng. has already suffered through a bout of what was diagnosed in Eng as 'tennis elbow' .. but .. when she returned to France for holidays it was discovered it was actually a back problem .. she's all of 18 !!! Heart set on teaching Viola as well as performing .. she missed a semester of playing ..

Travel safe to anyone travelling in any part of our country .. I was just outside with Lilly for a walk .. and the snowflakes that are falling are HUGE .. open your mouth and catch about 5 LoL course .. yer eyeball will catch about 50 while you're doing that !!!!

Cheers everyone

OH!!! Re that plane crash in Buffalo .. OMG !!!! Tragic .... some rather astounding stories coming in in the aftermath .. one woman missed the flight .. another was on her way to a 9/11 type of event (she perished as did her husband in the 9/11 tragedy) ..
As I said .. we live in a very changeable world !!!

Did I hear on the news this morning that it was a female pilot? I sure hope it doesn't show that pilot error was a factor. I have a university friend who lived in the Clarence area for awhile and HAVE visited there. (I actually grew up in Rochester).

Marilynne I HAVE had bits of tennis elbow from time to time, but I think the biggest factor was crocheting a lot. Viola playing CAN lead to various neck problems and I've had my share. Never did have very good shoulders either. And neck problems can be a factor in tennis elbow too. Mostly I find a good massage therapist is worthwhile.

Back to work.

I hope everybody is feeling better. Lots of flu in my studio, I have been coughed on every conceivable germ by a little kid or teenager so I am building up immunity!

Annabelle, so sorry about the job....

Regarding musicians and pain, my violinist husband was on disability from the CPO for almost two years and at last is back playing. So far, knock on wood, I haven't had any serious injuries from playing but it is rampant in the orchestra now. Ann, that sounds like a brutal program. I played a Phillip Glass symphony last week and I was afraid of injury, it was SO repetitive.

Amici String Program is a new program of weekly master classes and chamber music my partner and I are offering to string players grade 6 to AR level. We also offer monthly solo recitals. We have about 55 kids in the program now and the recitals sometimes run over five hours. It is pretty cool but definitely a labor of love. And yes our Kiwanis has been early the past few years. It begins March 3 and ends March 21. It is really hard to prepare the big works in that amount of time.

My son had a six hour jaw surgery last week so I have been doing the liquid diet thing. I have not obsessed over his food this month since he was a toddler! (He is 21 now).

Yes Carol let's get the Fools together!!!!!! That would be awesome!

Greetings to all Hardy Canadian Gardeners Who Endure Weather! The days are getting longer and we all know what that means! Theresa

Yupper Violist "Festival of the Wakening of the Dahlias" WHOOO HOOO! - 14 more sleeps. Man I can't wait to start tomatos too. A Fooly Party would be fantastic!!! We haven't all been together for so long. Maybe a snowstorm will happen and Carol will bake! Just kiddin would make for bad driving conditions.

AWwwwwww ... cute pics .. and .. Betty .. I finally took the PLUNGE and joined the Jacquie Lawson site .. have wanted to for years .. but always talked myself out of it .. the link you sent is such a wonderful card .. thank you ^_^

Been a busy day here .. baked and helped with the yearly AIDS Committee Valentines Waffle breakfast .. we made a goodly amount this year .. both waffles and $$$ :-)
Weather is just awesome .. putting together a casserole and a loaf of bread and heading out to enjoy the day ..

Awfully cold here but it's sunshine..so can't complain..
Went to town and picked up a few goodies and groceries..stew is on, went and forgot flour, now how can I make fresh bread with no flour so off to get some on my break..

You know me, in order to get through this weekend, hate Valentines, it's almost as though the advertising system says you are a loser without a mate...drats..so I keep myself busy...

Kitties were asking for a bench to go temporarily until they get outside so they can watch the world go by, up to now it's tippy toes for them to see out the window..

I've got it constructed, just more sanding then deciding how I want to finish it...took out that cafe birdhouse I didn't get done last fall, cut out the 2 doors..probably 1/2 day and it would be done also, so, my break is over..again hope you enjoy the day..

Theresa, sure hope your son is improving with the special care he's getting from mom..

Best run before I lose steam..

Waving Don, you'll soon be on our side of the border right?

Calgary, Canada

So dahlianut, do you start dahlias March 1? Under lights?

Happy valentine's day all, I don't think it's just for people with mates. My favorite valentine this year (don't tell my husband) is from a four year old student who brought me in a large garish red velvet rose. He told me very seriously, "I know you love flowers but don't plant it outside because it's not real!"
