What's Happening in YOUR Neighborhood # 13

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I'll start the new thread. I hope that Betty is OK with this as it was originally her thread. If you'd like to look back at the previous thread, you'll find it at:

Thanks Ann, not my thread..Canadian thread for us to gab...

It was quite a day here yesterday, mega snow, imagine taking the plows and sanders off the road..still this morning they had now plowed our roads in town..

"M" one thing to say READ YOUR MANUAL..almost embarassed...last year bought a car and thanks to you girls found out it must have a plug in cord..got that organized, used my car yesterday and with all the snow on the ground, ice underneath it was slip/slide all the way home..no sooner got to my town that a lightbulb went off..didn't the salesman say something about a 'hold' button next to gear shift...used similar to a 4 wheel drive...pressed it in, OMG what a difference in driving...best I take out my manual tonight and READ/READ/READ...

Hope you are all safe, everyone getting bad weather..newscaster this morning said that to date this month we've surpassed by 25% our normal snowfall.. also said that traditionally February is the coldest month...how cold can you go when it's often been fluctuating from -11 to -30????

Enjoy your day..

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Well .. our piddly 1" of snow is likely to melt this afternoon .. it's a beautiful day .. and .. my sheets weathered being out on the line overnight ...

Went out for lunch with the girls today .. course had to show'em all the new car .. Betty .. I swear .. my car beeps whenever it feels like it :-) I still haven't brought the book in .. will go out after and fetch it as I am not totally 100% comfortable with the cruise control .. as in how to accelerate a tad more when it's on.

Should scoot Lilly outside for a wee walk ..

Take care .. thanks for moving us Ann

The bus strike is over! All it took was Rona Ambrose to announce that she was legislating them back to work. They agreed to binding legislation about an hour before the legislation was to be tabled. She sure did a back flip from her position of last week. I bet a lot of people gave her an earful.

Got 12 jars of Cranberry-Orange Marmalade made after bells tonight. Or say I cooked it. All the cutting was done last night and the peel simmered for 2 hours this afternoon. That gets done once a year when Seville oranges are in season.

Ann

Victoria Harbour, ON

Was glad to hear the strike was over..thing is how come it will take another week to get everything up and running...

My nephew is at York University and they are scheduled back to return to school on Monday after over 2 or was it 3 months off due to the teachers strike..now the students have to take classes through the summer..many will not be able to because it's during this period of time that they work/save for the next year...tragic..know from Brian that many students in their last year have just given up...

Snowing here, heavy at times, understand its almost blizzard conditions at home..glad we are off at 3:00..think I'll head straight home instead of going to Midland (weekly visit or is it 2 at Fabricland) want to make sure I've enough to entertain myself all weekend as they are calling for storms...

Wouldn't you know, that I had all but beat this cold and now this morning I'm hacking and running a fever...only be can get sick for the weekend...

Be safe all of you...

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

It will take awhile because the buses have been stopped so long that every one of them needs to be inspected. They actually expect it to take as long as two months to have the entire fleet up and running. Workers were blocking rush hour traffic shovelling out bus stops this morning, though.

Ann

Victoria Harbour, ON

Well at least it's start..that's crazy though, to take so long...

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Happy to hear about BOTH job actions being resolved in some manner .. I wonder how they'll handle the York students missed classes .. I know a few from TBay who attend York have summer jobs here that commence in mid May .. these jobs are for next years tuition ..

Have a wee bump on my head :-( suffice to say .. one should NOT endeavour to check a phone message on their cordless phone while on a treadmill !!! I now know the importance of the cord that goes from me to the machine .. sure gave Lilly a scare .. me too .. hurt my feelings more than anything else though LoL

Cooking and cleaning today as I am having a couple of folks over for luch tomorrow .. have a batch of homemade pea soup on in the slow cooker .. ya know .. I just don't use that appliance often enough ... smells so good when you're cooking something in a crockpot or slow cooker ^_^

Bright sunny day here .. but .. a titch on the cool side ..

giggle, sorry but the visual on that one made me laugh (just a little), ~M~. You are lucky you didn't hurt that wee body of yours any worse.

Have a good weekend everyone! ^_^

I am SO laughing .. I was absolutely APPALLED I had done what I did .. and with SUCH grace (CHOKE CHOKE) ... I was just lucky that I 'tipped over' onto the handle .. when a treadmill STOPS in a hurry .. anything on it is thrown forward .. Lilly was in her wee bed watching me go for my 'inside walk' .. and she rushed over to see if she could lick me all better .. Smokey just poked his head up .. yawned and went back to sleep !!!!

Live and Learn !!

~M~

Yeah, I'm still laughing from falling down the stairs last week. Marilynne, if you aren't sore in a few places now, you probably will be in a few days.

Talk about graceful...and carpet burns

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Ouchies - Marilyn & Echoes!!
Pamper yourself, and you'll feel better soon lol

-Susan-

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

OH NO Echoes !!! Talk about hurt pride x 2 L0L ...
I'm feeling a few owie spots .. plan to take a couple of TES before bed and hope for the best ..
Falling down the stairs can be horrific depending on the incline .. I hope it wasn't a huge flight of stairs !!

I was able to take Lilly out for a walk . .. gosh .. it's actually a 'pleasant' evening out there ... snow on the way I hear .. we'll see ..

Have a nice evening all ^_^

~M~

Not real concerned about my pride. Just thankful nothing is broken, the stairs are carpeted. It was in the middle of the night and I was worried about being quiet. Never even let out the whoop. But I did have a few coloured words to say at the bottom.

Thanks Susan.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Just happy to hear nothing broke .. I seem to be OK this morning ..a bit stiff .. but that'll pass once I start getting busy, at least I hope it will.

Looks as though we got dusted with flakes last night .. not too sure how many .. but enough. It's already 15F, so, am looking forward to a pleasant day. The friends coming for lunch are bringing their XCountry Skis .. but .. I think I may try to convince them to walk a few of the deer trails with me as a few of the Buckeroos have dropped their antlers .. I like to try and find them .. sorta like a 'treasure hunt' .. not that I do much with the antlers .. BUT .. I did see a picture in a Canadian Outdoor or Country living magazine that showed a chandelier MADE from sheds (deer antlers) .. it was kinda trippy ^_^
Trick is .. I'd have to find someone who could DO that .. BETTY .. I betcha you could !!!!

Off to make another coffee ..

Enjoy your day :-)

Good morning,

Cold one here, but I think tomorrow will be a bit warmer.

Those of you who are falling, stop it now. We don't need injuries over here. So glad neither of you was seriously injured.

Have an orchestra rehearsal all afternoon and a concert tonight. We are doing a program of Chinese music which is kind of interesting. Most of it is not too difficult which is good since I've never played any of it before and there are about a dozen pieces.

Am off to breakfast. Hope you all have a good day.

Ann

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Sheesh Ann .. I so envy you and your 'comfort' with the music and new pieces .. even though I had piano training .. without practice I am pretty much left with that old faithful 'CHOPSTICKS' .. Sister St Romuelle would NOT be impressed !!!! Mind you .. I can read and SING sheet music .. odd how the brain stores and processes information.
Anyway .. 'BONNE CHANCE' with both rehersal and concert. I missed a tribute to Handel in mid January .. some of the pieces played were from Messiah .. ahh well .. have heard it MAY be repeated in the Spring as the crowds loved it.

We're busy shovelling .. light fluffy stuff .. looks as though we'll be getting more than just a little ..
Promise not to fall LoL.

Back to some housework ... be still my heart !!!!!

Ciao

Cute rabbit photo teehee!

Here it is a beautiful Sunday morning.....-3 which isn't bad considering it has been really cold lately. I don't mind -3 with lots of sun out there.

The kids are already outside playing....I may even join them :)

Victoria Harbour, ON

OOOOHHHH "M" antlers...yes, wouldn't it be lovely as a chandelier...saw it in one of my magazines...now don't tell me I have to find 'deer' hideaway to get me some...lucky/lucky you..

Echoes and "M" OMG girls, you got to watch that you don't take more falls..bones are brittle...but I did have just a little chuckle, not at you but with you...

It's a stay in your jammies weekend again, still hacking..best I get better by Friday, promised mom to take her to Buffalo for the weekend, she want to do some major shopping..if I do say so myself, a trip to Joanne's Fabrics sounds mighty fine as well..who knows what I will find...

Fabricland had a big sale on this weekend or was it last, doesn't matter, managed to pick up some goodies..my girlfriend Darlene wanted a rag quilt coverlet like I made myself, perhaps a little bigger so Thursday night I pick up the material and almost got all the blocks cut...Saturday I returned to Fabricland, girls know me by name by now..lol...they had beautiful off white curtain material..was think a canope type window dressing but promised myself 'nope' not until you finish that quilt..do you KNOW how fast you can sew when you've a project waiting for you..I will have the quilt done tonight but I'll save the bed for yet another day...

Stew is in the crockpot, homemade bread soup await me for lunch...my break is over at least for now...sunny but cold day out there...setting quilt blocks on living room floor with sunshine coming in feels so good...

Hope it's nice in your neck of the woods..know it is in yours "DON"....

Betty - do you then tuft the corners of some of those squares? I made a HUGE quilt for our bed using bits of my leftover sewing scraps in the same manner. Yours will be really colourful.

I'm working on vegetable - mostly cauliflower soup. Have had the cut cauliflower in the fridge for too long - it's not a favourite with the other half of the family. Now have it simmering in a pot with onion, potatoes and a bit of sweet potato. should be yummy, I hope.

We were back from church late - meeting afterwards in regard to going ahead in the process to do a $2 million revitalization of our 46 yr-old Christian Education wing with its failing plumbing, heating and electrical systems. It's costing a fortune to keep patching it up. We still aren't committed to do it, but we will go to the next steps of determining where the funding will come from and the initial floor plan. The entire building will be gutted and all systems replaced and wall reconfigured.

Ann

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

OH MY Betty!! I do so love the colours in that quilt coverlet .. as I envy Ann her musical finesse .. so do I envy you your apptitude for crafts .. I'm the music listener and the craft purchaser .. :-)

We have had a HUGE wind here today, and with it DRIFTING !! Lawsie .. a couple of places along Lilly's trail were a couple feet deep from snow blowing over it during the night. I foolishly put a set of sheets on the line to dry after they froze .. right now they are WRAPPED around the line and I have NO IDEA how I will get'em off !!! The snow under the line has got to be almost up to my waist .. because the sheets have 'trapped' the line, I can't pull it in .. a CONUNDRUM for me .. GAIN LoL ..

Haven't seen CArol in the Forum for a bit (Fancy) ...

Betty .. did not go and look for sheds .. this next week I might though .. I already have enough antlers for a chandelier .. however .. I doubt I would use it in my kitchen .. it would be super for a camp/cottage though.

I put my foot down the other day with regards to all the STUFF in the freezer .. as a result .. I am cooking a FULL ON turkey dinner tonight .. guess we'll watch the Super Bowl following .. I am NOT a football fan .. but .. I do like Bruce Springsteen ^-^

Have blabbed long enough .. off to peel potatos

~M~

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY everyone ^_^

Will these Groundhogs see their shadow or not ? I HOPE he doesn't .. but I think that's a tall order to fill given this winter !!

YAY to anyone who was rooting for the Steelers .. I wasn't .. I don't do football .. but to be kind I was pulling for the 'BIRDS' (Cardinals)

Have a great day .. MAY be off to purchase a dishwasher today .... depends on what the day looks like as the world awakens :-)

Well "M" if you ever have any extra, I'll pay the shipping...lol..

Don, you just had to do it right make me envious..keep that up and "M" will pick us up in her new wheels and we'll head down in March, what week is better for you...lol

Did I tell you all, might be going with several other girls to B.J.'s in Texas in May for a get together..wouldn't that be fabulous...have been to Texas..did most of it but always a corner I didn't explore...

Ann, I sew leaving the seam allowance on the top about 6/8ths of an inch then when all put together I clip about every 1/8th or 1/4" in..when washed you get the old tattered look...

Drove in because Suzanne has the flu, don't mind telling you I'll not be happy if I catch it..Paul came in last week when he said 'almost better' now Suzanne has it..still spend all weekend in my jammies as I wasn't feeling the best...I won't be happy if I catch it...

The sun was shinning, blue skies, can almost feel spring in the air..well, maybe not...but enough that I'll think gardening..have a few projects I started that need finishing..like the water spiral unit for the 4' stained glass blue heron under my bed...must while my brother isn't working because of the weather hit him to help me out...

If I'm up to it and no storm on Friday I'll head out to Buffalo for the weekend, mom is getting antsy with not going to Florida so will drive her across..good excuse to go material and craft hunting..lol

Have a wooden photo album I'm painting here in the office..another day or 2 and it will be done, best I get at it...

Oh Darlene called me at work, loves the quilt..now I'm making 2 little ones for her kitties with left over material..

Thumbnail by Bettypauze
Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Ooooooooooo Gorgioso :-) Love the colurs you've used Betty and the patterning .. your bud is indeed fortunate ..

Didn't go to town today .. I did some filing and helped a friend in Edmonton who is a nursing prof with a few kinks in her present program .. the wonders of the internet ... and a great phone plan ..
Maybe tomorrow I'll have a look at the dishwashers .. I have been STOIC for the last couple of months .. but .. stoicism only goes SO far .. I HATE doing dishes 3 to 4 times a day !!!

Hmmmmmmm .. still no posts from Carol .. must look back and see if perhaps she was going away ..

Take care

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I just phoned her & left a msg - I can't recall if she was going away, either....
Maybe she went to take some, or pickup some shelties somewhere?!

-Susan-

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Nope not gone/going anywhere just haven't been doing anything much except making tug toys for ASR to sell at our fund raising table end of Feb. I really got 'hooked' on these things.

Some of the tugs

Thumbnail by fancyvan
Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Have just finished an initial analysis of the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard donations for 2008. Very similar to 2007 (705 rather than 706) but they brought in nearly $11,000 more than in 2007. An article in today's paper is saying many small charities will go under, but that community based charities have a home grown support base that really comes through for them. That sure seems to be the case. Average donation is nearly about $13 larger. It's sure a nice place to be in going into uncertain times.

Ann

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Carol
Great tugs, Cleo got one for Christmas and is using it daily , even throwing it for herself. When it gets stinky I just throw it in the wash.

Weather here over the weekend was VERY windy in gusts. It's settled down and we still have skating rinks on all the side roads with some dandy ruts to navigate.
We are supposed to get some more snow but it has not arrived yet.
Super quilt Betty, and what a good idea to have matching ones for the 4paws family.
Ann

(Zone 4a)

Gross weather here...it is getting really cold again overnight and the next few days.... Boohoo I am tired of this....bring on the warmer weather!!!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

GREAT to hear from you Carol .. and the TUGS look awesome ^_^

A bit cool here this morning .. have no idea what to expect in the weather dept .. as long as it isn't too cold, or snowy, we'll be happy :-)

I got my sheets off the line yesterday, I'll NEVER put sheets on the line in a wind like THAT again !! I trudged out to unravel them in snow up to my hips .. I thought it'd be a simple matter to just flip them over the line a couple of times .. NO WAY .. I ended up having to take both sheets and the pillow cases off the line before the line would seperate and let go !!! Lilly was frantic with me out there swimming in the snow .. L0L

Looks like a shopping day .. course, as the day lightens .. that could change ..

Enjoy

~M~

Victoria Harbour, ON

Carol love those pulls..what a great fund raising idea..wanted to mention my sister is flying to New York City tomorrow..getting ready to show her pooch in the Westminster Dog show..very exciting for her...one evening it will be televised, have to find out and watch...

Ann thank goodness the Food Cupboard is doing ok..so many will be in need..each and every day you hear of more plants shutting down or laying off...so sad!

"M" quite the picture of you fighting with the sheets but hey, nothing is nicer than getting into bed with fresh sheeting off the line..it was bright and -9 when I left the house this a.m. - almost felt spring like...then when I got about 8 miles outside of barrie you couldn't see where you were driving...

Last night with leftover blocks I decided I had enough to make 2 - 16block rag quilt pieces for Darlene's kitties..finished one and machine went capoot...yuk..probably major..didn't need that to happen...

I brought my sewing machine in to work this morning, looked in the telephone book as I knew there was a sewing center about 6 miles from here..waited patienty until 9:00 am... called and was told there is a 3 to 4 week wait for repairs..now that didn't impress me BUT if I paid $25.00 emergency fee then it could be done within several day..ok I'll do that ..she tells me they've now moved to a new location..hey right next to Tim Hortons a block away..Paul is in the office so he told me to run and do my errand..get there with machine in hand, she takes it and says there is an estimate fee of $25.00 + taxes..

Well I left the office without my wallet..she says I'll set the machine down and when you return with the $25+tax we'll have a look...told her I would come over at lunch and give her the money, she said she'd set the machine aside and would look at it once they get the money..policy it is..I said, hello there, wouldn't you think the $3,000. machine would be enough for me to come back later and if I don't, you have the machine..
not good enough, won't look at it till I pay..so I came back to get my wallet back out I went and paid the amount..she said she was sorry but policy is policy..I simply said POLICY could be, if you don't pay the estimate fee YOU DO NOT get your machine back...must tell you I'm more than annoyed...people and policies..yes, some make sense, and no, at times they make absolutely NO SENSE! can you tell I'm annoyed...

And yes I know, it's their policy and if I don't wish to abide by it, take my machine somewhere else...drats..

So, having my coffee, trying to calm myself, watching the snow fall...

Suzanne is home again today with the flu..when I called to see if we were sharing a ride I was shocked at how she sounded..let's hope she's not in tomorrow either..DON'T want to come down with it...just getting over this cold virus..

CONGRATULATIONS Carol...could you take a close up of eachpage and post, perhaps we could read the article..love the photo's...

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Betty, you must let us know your sister's name and her doggie's name and breed, so we can watch for her on TV. I always try and catch the Westminster Show and it would be fun to watch someone we know (kinda) and from Canada.

Sorry to hear about your Sewing Machine woes. I think we can all sympathize having gone through similar bureaucratic ridiculousness. (Is that a word?) anyway, we feel your pain...

Congratulations Carol. It certainly would be nice to read the article and see the photos. ^_^

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Carol
YAHOO! Congrats! Do they publish that mag in Edmonton? Or are they just for Calgarians and members?
I too would like to read the article. It means so much more when you've been there.

Betty, Yikes, are they the only game in town?

Ann

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

It is just the magazine for the Calgary Hort Society members.

For a variety of reasons I wont bore you with I am not entirely pleased with the article but thats what happens when you give an interview that is not live!
And are not allowed to see it before publication.

I took some more pics but not sure if it is readable or not.
