I've just recently come to the conlusion that the smaller spirea shrubs are the best for me. They can pretty much fill the space like a perennial, but they are small enough that they won't crowd out nearby plants. Here's a good example in my garden: http://members.home.net/kygarden/spirea-phlox.jpg
You may have seen another of my posts where I had just bought "mellow yellow" spirea. This one is a smaller one as well. I think I may have to buy a few more to fill in bare spots. The one in the hyperlink picture is a favorite of mine. They perform very well.
Great shrub for the garden
Marty, that's pretty. Do you know what variety it is? It looks similar to my Spiraea bumalda 'Anthony Waterer' but there are several varieties that look very similar.
By the way, if you are patient and willing, you can probably take some cuttings of your 'Mellow Yellow' spiraea and grow more shrubs. They'll take a couple years to get to a good size, but it can be a fun and inexpensive way to grow your garden. :)
I'd have to look to see which one it is. I'm not sure off the top of my hand.
