Would eggshells be good to add to my veggie beds?
Egg shell question
If you need to raise pH. The primary ingredient is Calcium Carbonate. Probably has a few different nutrients than ground limestone. Unless you have an alkaline soil, should not do any harm.
I'll start tossing them in the garden. Always seemed like a waste to throw them in the trash.
Do you compost?? Thinking I would start one....
I don't have room for a compost pile. It would take away room that I garden in so I just put the composting stuff right in the beds.
You might find it useful to get a mortar and pestle to grind up the egg shells, for easier distribution. We used to just throw them in, and they would last a bit before breaking down properly, until we started pestling them. Great fun, too.
wendyloo66-I'm an avid composter..happy to answer any questions if you have them.
We don't buy eggs b/c we have an egg allergic child..but they can be composted..in a pile or around plants. They add calcium so put them around your tomatoes.
I crush the shells in my hand before I put them in the bed.

I have been putting them on a plate to dry and then crushing them to small bits with my hand before adding them to the bed. Think I'll start adding the coffee grounds too.
Cajun,
By all means, add the coffee grounds, too. Earth worms like the coffee grounds.
Karen
That is great news. Then I can feed the worms to my turtle and my salamander.
