Weird Weather of '09!! ....... #3

Eugene, OR

That stuff had so many staples on it!!! It wasn't too bad when we moved in, so I left it planning on changing it later. heeheehee I had contact paper on the other shelves and the drawers, much easier to take off. Crawling around on the floor and into those bottom cupboards has been a pain! And I'm sure not a pretty picture. Will be glad to get everything cut so I can get the piece of plywood off my counter, made it easy measuring and cutting though.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

what a chore. my knees would be killing me by now. But well worth it. the upside is that, given the brighter color, it will always look cleaner now!

Eugene, OR

I agree. If you look on the table in the first pic. There's a folded up fluffy towel I've been using to kneel on. LOL

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I definitely need something fluffy to kneel on. Looks great, Sally.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Wow Sally you have a lot of cupboards! How nice it will be to have them all done and your stuff all organized. And protect those knees!

My parents have a lot of deer visiting their yard - they live near Lake Tahoe. They used to like them but now they curse them. Ate my Mom's entire herb garden a few years ago.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Wow. Those Lake Tahoe deer are something. I thought that rosemary and lavendar were supposed to guarantee keeping them away. I guess there are lots of other kinds of herbs.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Nice job on the cupboards, Sally. One of those jobs that is awkward, but extremely rewarding when you get down too it. I can't even kneel on a towel too long anymore, I do a lot of shifting from squatting to kneeling to laying down to bending over and back to squatting . . .

(Judi)Portland, OR

Katie59 I think the rosemary was the only thing the deer didn't gobble but the lavender was chewed to the ground with all the other herbs. Some of them were pulled out roots & all and left holes where they once were. Quite sad for Mom. She had worked so hard on it and she was 84 at the time!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Sally, I'm sorry. I had pretty good feeling you knew the difference, I just didn't see the ducks because of them being so small and in the grass. I get those blocks at a feed store. They're just called a wild bird block.
Susan

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Aw Portland - that makes me so sad. Did she ever get it all replanted?

Mine do leave my lavendar alone, but maybe that's just because there are alternatives. Good to know that the rosemary, at least, is something they left alone!!

P.S. Maybe it was a band of teenage male deer and they finished it all before they stopped to taste it. LOL

Eugene, OR

Thanks everyone, 3 more down, 5 to go, I goofed off today.

No reason to be sorry Susan, I thought it was funny everyone was trying to help me. LOL Those little ducks were really hard to see, I still wish they had been babies.

What a shame on the herb garden, I hope she could redo it and protect it from the marauders.

Katie....your description was exactly what it took to get the low cupboards done. Well almost done, took some time off today to go to my tatting class, knees needed a break, but there are only 2 more low ones. Yeah!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Mom's herb garden never got replanted because there are so many deer so she gave up. My parents also have a lot of wild turkeys around and they sit on the plants and crush them. They also sit in the birdbath and refuse to move even when shooed. There is a patio with a low fence that the deer don't seem to want to get over so that is a greta place for plants. it's pretty funny to see my 92 year old Dad waving his arms and trying to scare the deer.

Sally - almost done!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Awwwww - it sounds like your folks are getting overrun with wild animals. I had never thought about the trouble wild turkey might cause.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Portland, have your parents get some Liquid Fence for both the deer and the turkey's. The one for deer is made of rotten eggs and garlic and the one for turkey's (it's actually for geese) is made of grape skins. I got the one for deer and sprayed my Arborvitae with it, let me tell you it STINKS, but it does work, even rain doesn't wash it away. I learned about it from my Aunt and Uncle that live in Hoquium, WA. They swear by it and I do too now. The odor lingers for a couple of days, but once you get used to it you don't even notice it but deer do. The one for geese tastes nasty to geese, ducks and turkeys so makes them look for better tasting food elsewhere. It comes in ready-to-use or concentrate in different amounts and is a little spendy, but well worth it in the long run. Have them call around to different nurseries or feed stores to see if they carry it.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Gardener - Mom & Dad live in a gated community with lots of deer & turkeys and everyone there has this problem. They have all tried the Liquid Fence, plus some other products and nothing works! Perhaps the deer and turkeys have learned to adapt. The turkeys don't eat many plants but they do sit on the plants and generally make a mess. The nurseries in the area are well stocked with all kinds of remedies! Still, the creatures carry on their mission. The deer have also become a problem on the golf course, sometimes chasing golf carts. It's the only time I heard my distinguished father use the f word. :)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

What a word image. - deer chasing a golf cart and your dear father cussing at them.
Maybe the deer need to be escorted out of the gated community and only let back in, if they have the correct combination or key.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Wow Portland, those deer and turkeys are tough! Obviously being a gated community can be tough on the residents at times. I can just hear a 92 year old man saying the f word. LOL!!! What a HOOT!!!
Susan

(Judi)Portland, OR

Saying the f word and waving a cane no less.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Don't know what the quantities are, but if anyone use the turkey-repellent made of grapeskins, it's good to remember that grapes are toxic to dogs.

Depending on the quantities of grapes used in the formula, you might want to limit dogs' access to the area treated for the first few days.

I've never heard of turkey-repellent. Heh.

Great picture Willow!!! And Portland the one your Dad sent is just too cute for words

I've been watching a thread about a rescued kitten (Charlie) and todays post has some great pictures. And there is a link she put in to show a picture that her husband took with his new camera that is amazing.

rc....you'll love this one.

Charlie is darling!

Eugene, OR

Isn't he gorgeous? His story is neat. He has a forever family now and they still share him us. You should see his paws....six toes on both fronts. I keep calling them ping pong paddles. LOL

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Portland, that story is too funny! what a great image I have of the deer chasing the golf cart and your dad. That's going to be me when I'm 90. Running around chasing the deer with a cane and cussing at them as if they understand the significance of my using that particular word on them. i gaurantee you... that will happen!!!

Beautiful picture Willow! I love the colors right now. I soooo miss them.

Sally, thanks for the link. that story is too cute. I can't believe that they're actually trying to toilet train the cat. I started to follow that thread when it first began and then I lost it. So, I'm so glad to see that Charlie is doing so well. What a doll.

Eugene, OR

rc....did you look at this link? This is the one I wanted you to see.

No, that's the first time that I've seen that link that you just posted Sally. that's absolutely amazing. If I had to guess what the object in the picture was, i would never get it. Boy that must be a really nifty camera to get that much clarity at such a finite size. Dang, I think that when I some day, in years, move up in cameras, I need to get one like that! I can't believe that's just a marble. We can't even see that sort of detail with the human eye!!!!

Eugene, OR

That was in that thread. Charlie's Daddy took it. I was just as amazed as you, it's like something out of a science fiction movie. Awesome!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

definitely! Charlie's such a cute polydactile!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Portland, that pic is absolutely precious!
That pic that Jim took looks like something from outerspace to me, amazing detail too!

I think there are a lot of polydactyl cats - I once had one and didn't even know it until the poor creature got a thorn in his paw. A couple of my friends had similar cats. Let's hope it doesn't become more common in people!

The marble photo is fantastic!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I keep marvelling at the fact that polydactylism in humans would be a "problem", but it's polydactyl cats that get adopted out fast.

The Hemingway cat colony in Florida is polydactyls.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

That's interesting Katie.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I just found a site:

http://www.hemingwayhome.com/HTML/our_cats.htm

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Katie, what a fantastic site, I put it in my favorites so I can go back to it later and check out all the cats and the rooster! I used to have a rooster that looked very similar to that. He was a Rhode Island Red, he started to get mean and was in the yard with only one hen so I gave him to a lady that had 5 Rhodies herself and wanted to try and breed the hens and incubate the eggs in her incubator. I'm sure Red was happy. I know, not a very unique name. LOL!
