Rj you could have been nice and kept that cold up there in Houston instead of sending it down my way. Brrrrrrrrr such nasty weather. I was really enjoying the nice sunny weather we had on Monday.
Christi, where is Desoto? I know you have to be north of us, but just not sure where you are located.
Tropical Garden #29
Technically, DeSoto is a suburb south of Dallas. We are actually 14 miles from downtown Dallas and 14 miles from downtown Waxahachie. We are west of 35E by about 1/2 mile.
All of the cities grow together now so can't tell where one stops and the other starts.
I thought you might be close to Dallas. You get some cold temp's this time of year. When is the last frost date around there? March or even April???
Officially it is March 17. But don't depend on it. Can be as late as the end of April as it was last year and caught everyone off-guard. It was 19 when we got up this morning. Ice is just now beginning to melt. Pretty much paralyzed everything from here to Canada.
Yep Sunshine that's it...they change shape totally... those pothos get huge too.
That's the one clerodendrum that I cannot get to bloom.
Now Patty, you know me and cold...I think someone from DFW sent it. I wonder if I'm going to have to have a plant wrapping party tonight..better check weather
Randy, i think this is your office plant, syngonium, aka nephritis, the all green variety http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Araceae/Syngonium_podophyllum.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Araceae/Syngonium_podophyllum.html&usg=__BxnciXHbkiVs9sTgmQ7wm55n6S8=&h=372&w=250&sz=17&hl=en&start=47&um=1&tbnid=s8nR2dd6Ze7RhM:&tbnh=122&tbnw=82&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsyngonium%26start%3D36%26ndsp%3D18%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us%26sa%3DN
Rob, I think your tree is a banyan tree. I've only seen them in FL, but maybe HI has them too, I dunno
randy, your papaya tree is huge! I thought they stayed 6-7 tall. maybe papaya trees are another of those office plants?
I've seen them get as big as the second story of a house...they're very tall in Hawaii.
the giant plant is this one

It starts out looking like this, and ends up totally different looking...and if I didn't have 2 more that have done the same thing in the back, I'd think I was seeing things.
Hi Snowbird and Fritzie
Hi Button,
That looks like a hibiscus to me.
Hap
Yes, it is Hibiscus "Morning Glory." The Mg. is just the cultivar.
My greenhouse is kept at 55 and although that's a little cool, the plants for the most part seem to tolerate it. Hurry up Spring & get rid of the grey skies, snow & ice.
When I lived in Rochester, NY, I had a GH so I wouldn't go nuts with the weather. It really affects me. They are a joy.
Hap
I looked up my official last frost date and it said January 26th. I thought "Yeah Right". February is usually are coldest month so I'm holding off planting anything right now.
Really? I usually haul everything out of the greenhouse in Feb.
No doubt in my mind that your lot is under some sort of spell. Just look around your neighborhood, they don't have the same results. If this freeze didn't get it here, it can't be got. (not such good grammar). Not much left anyway.
The scientific name is: Oceoclades maculatus

Thanks so much.
What a pleasant surprise. It seems as if I am not the only one getting spring fever. I stayed up most of the night making sure that my breakers did not trip, it got down to 17 degrees last night. Trying to keep the GH at 55 was impossible. I will have to do the same again tonight as it should get down to 22 degrees.
LiliMerci, very interesting pictures from your vacation, are those passion fruit in the last picture? I have never eaten passion fruit before. I 've some seeds given to me by a DG member.
I am anxious to try to grow them this summer.
sunshinesw, your san cyllindrica is new to me, it's a very unusual plant. I hope to find it in one of my plant shopping adventures. Thank you for showing those huge beautiful vines. Your yard long beans are interesting also.
Rj, I did not send the cold front down your way. I will have to go back and read your blog for this week. I always learn something new .
Buttoneer, your scarborough lily is also new plant to me. It is very pretty, it seems as if Fritzie was admiring it too.
Happy_1, that was a nice surprise. Do you have blooms on both Philos?
Hello to everyone else , stay warm and Happy Gardening. Keep those pictures coming

Rita, we should talk in the middle of the night when we are both up. Lately, around 2-4 am or there abouts, I am roaming the house and the yard if it is warm enough. Loosing sleep is a killer. I, too, have to worry with the breakers. That's what I get for living in this old house, never mind that we bought it brand new.
LOL..now that's funny....I will go out around 2 or 3 AM and check on things...we are hard core!
Thank Goodness I am not the on ly one.. I get up to check on the lights and surge protectors around 2 or 3 am.. sheesh!
wow those are some great photos and really big tropicals there! Hap I didn't know those things bloomed! and the office plant ( little one) gets that big? boy am I in for treats this summer with mine!
plac,
That is all one plant and it's about 25 years old. It's sister was tossed to a horrible death in our pool by Hurricane Wilma. Such pain that one caused me. Wilma took 1/2 my orchids too. One even made it over the house to the front yard. Nasty girl, she was.
Hap
Rj--Houston's last frost date was like March 16 or something like that according to the website I was looking at. I do remember it being warm in mid to late February and planting stuf without worryf, but that's been about three or four years ago. After we had that really cold spell around Easter in April two years ago I think, I have held off and tried to keep my spring fever under control.
(Whispering.......I don't have frost.)
(whispering) We have freezing fog this morning, 26 degrees. yuk
LOL!
Why yes Patty..matter of fact there are pictures of the Papaya on a stick from that 3 years ago in this weeks blog..then a picture of the tree today..basically the blog said, am I going to let a freeze 3 years ago, and magic frost date that may or may not happen stop me from doing stuff? nope...
There was ice on the hot tub cover this morning..but plants look fine.
