making seed tapes with tp

Stevensville, MT(Zone 4b)

Last year I made my own seed tapes with toilet paper. The carrots were evenly spaced and did not have to thin out....anyone ever try this?

Stevensville, MT(Zone 4b)

Roll out toilet paper...place seeds(spacing) according to package directions. Fold over the toilet paper and spray with water(wet but not soggy) Let the tp dry thoroughly....roll it up and store until planting. The seeds will stick to the toilet paper and not move.

Last year I made carrot seed tapes did not have too thin them and they were huge!! This year I will try lettuce and radishes.....the list could go on..

Wendy, you are the BEST! Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea! I was trying to think of how to make my own seed tapes, because the tapes were so much easier to plant than individual seeds, but SO expensive. I'm out of town right now, staying in a motel, so I could easily make up my own seed tapes here, so that when I get home and am ready to start planting my market garden, I can put these down in record time! WhooHoo!

Do you just use the TP as it comes off the roll, or do you cut the roll in half, making 2 narrower tapes?

Stevensville, MT(Zone 4b)

I use it as it comes off the roll, then fold over covering the seeds..let me know how it worked for you..

What an awesome idea:). I hate having to thin seedlings and by the time I get to go plant I'm in such a hurry to grow something that I never space them right.

Thx

Thanks for that! What a great easy idea!

what a way to get a head start and cure the winter garden blues @ the same time!!

How far in advance of planting can you do this? Also, how should the seed tape be stored? Fridge or in a cool dry place? I guess the tp dries out before the seeds have a chance to start germinating. This would be a great project for snow days!

Last year I made my seed tapes approx. in April and stored them in the fridge! Your right, good for snow days!

Sounds good! Thanks. ☻

wendy...thanks for the tip...do you think it would work with napkins for square foot gardening? virginia

Have not tried it with napkins but don't see why it would not work. Do a test now, please let us know how it worked!

Caneyville, KY(Zone 6b)

Well, while I was totally amazed at Wendy's idea, Virginia that is a cool idea too for a square foot garden. I can see it working, especially if you used a cheap brand of napkins.

Way to go girls!

Edisto Island, SC(Zone 8b)

got some seeds today...will let you know how it works...i think i'm going to use the flour and water mixture unless i get some feedback about something better...msrobin...cheap is the only way to go!!!

Stevensville, MT(Zone 4b)

Curious..what is the flour for?

Edisto Island, SC(Zone 8b)

you know...here's what you get from reading so many forums at one time...i did a search on seed tapes and the flour water mixture or the cornstarch water mixture was mostly used...when i found your tp and water suggestion i thought ahhh, now you're cooking...so my mistake, i'm going to use napkin and water...LOL...jeez...so much information so little brain...sorry about the confusion...virginia

I've had a vegetable garden for over 50 years, but never heard of this before. How wonderful not to have to thin seedlings.
THANK YOU!
