Massangeanna Cane House Plant (Help)

Langhorne, PA

...I recently purchased this plant. It seemed healthy.I know it requires very little water. I placed it at the bottom of my steps. It probably doesn,t get much light. Two days ago I noticed some of the leaves turning brown. I watered it well and placed it in the window? I,m not sure what to do.Help''''

Good that you are aware that it does not like a lot of water. It should dry out at least as far as you can stick a finger (3") into the soil, before watering again. It may be getting brown leaves from a number of causes: Too cold, air too dry, it is winter and it is getting rid of some old (3-4 year)leaves, or, the biggest problem with all houseplants: over-watering. It doesn't require sunlight on it's leaves, so you can move it to an area with bright light and reclaim your window.
I hope one of the experts comes along to give you more help.
Good luck with this lovely plant.

It might help to raise the humidity around the plant a bit. You can do this by sitting it on a tray of pebbles with a little water in the tray. As the water evaporates it raises the humidity around the plant. Another solution is use a spray bottle of water and mist once in awhile.

BTW, it blooms about this time of year. If anyone in the household has allergies, clip the bloom stalk off before the flowers open. This plant even has family members that are not otherwise allergic coughing and wheezing.
