I know mulch of course, but here's my dilemma...
Not only does my clematis have buds all over it, I think this is a hosta popping up.
Back in the early fall we mulched heavily. Temps have been unusually high here lately and starting tomorrow night the lows will be in the teens. How can I protect them more???
How do you protect your plants from freezing?
I use old blankets, towels, shirts and rags to cover my plants. Just make sure your they're not too heavy and/or use a few small stakes to bear the weight. You can use plastic bags but it's better to use cloth if it's going to be on for more than a few days. (Plastic can heat up too much when the sun shines on it)
Another trick for slightly larger plants is to wrap outdoor Christmas lights around the plant before covering it. The lights put off just enough heat to keep the plant warm but not set the blanket on fire :)
Or rake some more of the mulch over them.
I usually just put more mulch or find a bunch of leaves and cover them up again. That has always worked for me and I am a little farther north than you.
