The Northern Flicker came over to the closer tree, but still made it hard to get a pic! But you get a nice look at the yellow shaft.

Orchard Park, NY

LOL Aren't these just the most beautiful photos you've ever seen nanny? It must be the cold weather that makes that pop!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

GP, that pumpkin feeder is so cute! Why don't I ever think of things like that....

Very handsome grosbeak Burn!

Anchorage, AK(Zone 4a)

I saw another small flock of American Robins today. It was 15 degrees below zero fahrenheit. We had another clear, sunny, and very cold day. I was able to take a number of my best winter shots, of Robins, in direct sun today. A small number of Robins over winter here in Anchorage, AK every winter.

The American Robins were feeding in a mixed flock with European Starlings. Latter the flock was joined by a few Bohemian Waxwings. Waxwings are becoming scarce. Apparently this long cold spell is pushing the Waxwings farther south.

One of the Bohemian Waxwings, which joined the mixed flock. All three species prefer feeding on Black Chock Cherries, second choice is Mountain Ash, (known as Rowan, on the other side of the pond), third choice is Crab Apples.

Nice shots everyone.

I finally have a few lesser goldfinch starting coming around; but I can only photograph them through the window. They keep their distance whenever I'm outside.

Here's a black phoebe.

What a nightmare I had trying to take its picture. With all the surrounding tree branches, I had to use my camera's manual focus mode. And, just when I'd get focused in, it would fly to another branch. In the end, I finally won the battle and got a halfway decent picture of it.

I think the american kestrel is one of the prettier birds in my area. This one (a female) flew onto a tree top today that was only about 15 feet away from me; and she was very accomodating about letting me take her picture.

Burn, I love the Grosbeak!

Beautiful pics Gary!

Nanny,Rose and GP great shots!

Jane,I adore the Kestrel and the Phoebe!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Simply wonderful! I've never seen a Kestrel before.

I took this last year and just happened to come across it while looking for another photo. I thought I was crazy when I saw a duck perching in a tree. When I did some googling, I discovered the world of Wood Ducks. :)

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Neat pics Jane...you might want to add your female Kestrel to the Bird Files.

Love the Wood Duck shot Anita.

Wow Mrs. Ed didn't see that...and will have to figure out how to move it up to the top here too! I never scroll down that far....

Carolina Chickadee right out the window...snow does not make it easy! lol

Nanny, that Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker is beautiful. We just have the red.

NMJane, I'm so jealous of that Kestrel photo. It's beautiful. They're all over our area and I can't find one.

I could go on and on with all these beautiful birds-you all are amazing!!

Here's one of my many Lesser Goldfinches.
