Most Disappointing Shot Vol.5

Fox Island, WA(Zone 8b)

And finally my favorite bird from the Montana trip - the Stellers jay. No decent shots of this one darn it! It is a very nice branch shot though

rntx...I know what you mean about wood ducks. They always see me before I am close enough to get good pics.

This is the best Wood Duck from yesterday. Too far away and heavily cropped.

rntx, nanny, and f_chis...

To me, ya'll have awesome pics because they would all be "lifer" birds for me!
The only Wood Ducks, Chickadees and Steller Jays I've seen are in books/field guides...
I just saw 3 lifer's last weekend at one of our local parks here in Lincoln...a Red Headed Woodpecker, a White Breasted Nuthatch and a Red Breasted Nuthatch. And all of them are very common birds, but were all a 1st for me. I've seen Downy Woodpeckers before...but never the Red Headed ones...
This was one of the pics...not great, but it was for my record :)

Nice pic of the Red-bellied Woodpecker Susan!

Do they come to the feeders in your yard?

Congratulations on the new birds! Aren't the Nuthatch's adorable?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Hello Helen,

Thanks :)
Hmmmmm...oh, it's Red "Bellied" Woodpecker...ROFL...
Who names these birds?! It has a red head!
Anyway, in my previous post I mentioned I saw the 3 birds at our local park in Lincoln...which has more trees, like pines and evergreens. The park is only about 5-6 miles from our home. The likelihood I'd see any of those birds in our yard or neighborhood is slim to none...
Unless one lives very near the parks...there are very few trees that would interest Nuthatches, Chickadees, Titmouse, or Red-Bellied Woodpeckers.
We did have a Downy Woodpecker visit our yard once in December...but never came back :(

Hi Susan, I know,a lot of people ask why it isn't named Red-headed Woodpecker.

To my knowledge it's because there is another woodpecker that has a fully red head and they were named first so...

The Red-bellieds are such wonderful characters. I absolutely love them!

Good morning, Sally! So that's where the Great Crested Flycatcher has been. We had him come to our yard a couple of years ago, and I thought he was going to use the shed skins from our resident snakes to build a nest. Too bad he moved on. Who cares if the photos you took are a bit blurred?

SusanLouise- you might be able to crop that shepards hook right out of your Redbellied WP picture. Very nice! We have seen him a lot here. If you get the right angle you can see some red coloring way down under its belly. I guess they were desperate for a name once RedHeaded was taken.

Hi Sharon--Didn't mean to steal your flycatcher! I have fun watching this guy's habits around my garden. And that trademark ~wheep~ call- my hubby just goes yeah of course sure when I tried to point it out to him. (Hidden message- half the birds I hear do the same thing)

Well here's my heron story. I had just come home from the store, parked in the drive between me and the neighbor with the pool, and got out, when from behind and felt like only a foot over my head, comes this almost-not there swoooosh. This GB heron (?) lands on the neighbor's fence twenty feet from me. So I'm standing right next to my van which I figure is sort of concealing me so I stay and look.

=Minutes go by and I have groceries to put away.
It just sits there till I'm getting tired of watching! I go in and get the camera. During the event it moved to the peak on the roof next door. so this is the best I could do with the sun . But I was glad to have it

Yes Sally, looks like a Great Blue Heron. That sounds like a great experience.

Every morning in the summer they fly over my house; I just love them.

Wow only Resin could get an ID from the photos on this thread! LOL

The mountain chickadee, stellers jay, and wood ducks were all lifers for me, just wish I could have gotten a better photo to remember them by! Your 2nd wood duck photo is pretty darn good f-chisolm! They are just so skittish, I wonder how anyone has ever gotten a decent picture of them. Most likely with something much more powerful than 200mm so they don't have to be close.

Here is a ruby crowned kinglet. Would have been a really cute picture if not for the shadow!

I just saw a really pretty bird a woodpecker I think, and we were at the traffic lights - he slowed down and I had my camera ready - then he drove on - some people don't realise that I need to take pictures - they worry about all those people tooting behind us!

Not so easy, as it is blurred, rather than just dark!

Darn I was hoping for a cure to blurriness, since all my photos come out that way it seems!

Here's yet another messed up attempt at a ruby crowned kinglet. These guys probably produce tons of bad shots!

Here is my photo... what?? you say you don't see it?? it's suppose to be a Bufflehead duck. Would help if I had remembered to place my battery back in my camera before I went out birding miles from home. Makes ya wanna say bad words
