Yes, barberry might work! Maybe there is a wicked plant that if you brush your skin against you break into serious welts . . . .
NE Forum Round Robin for Flowers, Veggies or Herbs
Willie - does anyone even check the vending machines? Or the lobby? Does management manage the facility or is it on the list of "not MY job"???
I worked a few years as a mail carrier, so I understand the inner workings of the Post Office well. Customer Service is no longer emphasized, and where I worked, was frowned upon by the Postmaster & supervisers. So, most of us gave our best, & attempted to conceal what small favours we could offer the customers, from management, so as not to get in trouble.
I made sure I had fun working in this capacity - it is a drudgery, to be sure. Most of us really liked people, and wanted to ensure the satisfaction of the customer whenever possible. Easy to smile & be friendly, treating others the way you'd want to be treated: I respect people's property, so I never cut through any plantings. Plus, I was treated to seeing some very cool gardens as well as receiving vegies & flowers.
The problem these days is in the office: management does not schedule enough people to work the counter, and are not flexible in attending to the lines that form.
There is no incentive to hurry - in general, Government entities have the upper hand & not accountable to anyone or anything except $.
I moved on to other things & was quite glad, as my philosophy is polar opposite to "government-structured thinking".
It was educational though: I did have a great time working hard, and getting to know people in my community, along with a fun group of co-workers. However, incompetence & a lack of pride in one's work still makes me grumpy...
OK - back to fun stuff!
How many more days until the NE receives a major dose of wonderful spring weather? Seems like most of you got hit hard again this winter, and the pictures I've seen on other NE threads have been a jolt of reality and a reminder for those of us that live in milder climates to appreciate what we have.
The PNW is sliding into our very typical March weather: windy & wet, but no complaints from me. This gives the extra time needed to plan & get many things sown early.
I am curious to know what you're planning to grow this year that you've not grown before?
I can't believe the box arrived already! I tell you . . . it makes me wish I had a veggie garden too! There are sooooo many neat varieties of veggies!
I will have to rifle through my seeds and see if I can come up with some interesting seeds to replace those I take.
I presume I send the box back to you Cyndie? Anything in particular you might be looking for? (Just in case I have some . . .)
new england is not having spring this year. Did you hear the weather lately more snow lots more all week I have heard and rain in between it all. It is a test of our hardiness!!
Seandor,
Yes the robin comes back to me....If there is not a label in the box, my address is in the addy exchange.
Take what you would like to try. It is not required to replace what you have taken with the same number of packets.
I am not looking for anything thing in particular. If you have a flower that reseeds itself easily, that would be great. I am always trying to plant some empty banks that I have. This robin was my attempt to get rid of some seeds, so I don't have a wish list. LOL.
Robin, I don't know about you, but we got 2 feet of snow at my house. There goes my plan of having no snow in the yard come May.
Katye, I am glad you are having typical weather. The question about what we are growing new is a good one. I will check my stash and post what I am trying. I am always a sucker for new veggies.
Okay - ummmm . . . . what about poppies? Wouldn't a bank of annual poppies resow itself? . . . just a thought. . .
Yes - there was an address slip inside, I was just checking . . .
BTW, I hope you have a HUGE veggie garden! ^_^
I would love extra poppy seeds you if you have some. I can just winter sow those.
I have a large veggie garden, but probably not to for all the seeds you are hinting at. LOL
When I get the box back, I will take my turn, and then I am putting all those extra packets up for grabs to those who did this robin. The remainder are going to Lorraine who sends packets out to all the newbies on a regular basis.
If you are looking for flowers, I have more perennial seeds that have come in since I started the robin. Dmail me if you are looking for stuff.
Katye requested we tell her what we are growing new this year so I thought I would make a list.
Now I am embarassed because I had no idea I had so many "new" things. ;)
Every year I try to grow more things that we can eat on a daily basis, not just novelty things you get tired of. I am also always looking for shorter season things for a larger harvest. I do try hybrids on some veggies, but there are some I try to grow more of the heirloom varieties of, like tomatoes. When it comes to tomatoes, it is all about flavor for fresh eating. I do grow a few hybrids for canning or freezing.
My list this year of new varieties:
Pepper:
Laurel (seed from fellow DG'er)
Boldog Paprika
Sweet Pickle (using as ornamental in flower garden)
Eggplant
Red Egg
Lavendar Touch
Blizzard Snow Pea
Basil from Willie ;)
Zephyr Summer Squash
Winter Squash
Sweet Meat
Confection
Jarradale
Purple Pak Choi
Silver Cup Cauliflower -40 Days!
Early Dividend Broccoli- 43 Days!
Piracicaba Broccoli- A South America leaf variety
A half Dozen Heirloom Tomato varieties. A couple of new ones from Carolyn
I also have some new perennials I am starting from seed- thats for another post. LOL
If anybody has suggestions of greens etc that they harvest everyday for part of their meal, I would love to hear from you about what you grow and how you fix it. ;)
I have a bunch of poppy seeds as well... if anyone wants some
once you plant poppies, you always have them. Like Morning glories, and Borage...
what kind of poppies - annual?
Good Morning Everyone,
I feel like the days go so much faster as I get older!!
Cyndi, Yes at least two feet of snow it looks like a Fort of white stone here. If you dont get the Poppies you are looking for Cyndi let me know I have several kinds I got in one of the Round Robins that you are welcome to.
I guess everyone's mail carrier has survived our winter madness. I don't see any new plans for destruction. That's good because I have one more box coming and I really want it to get here.
here is my winter sow list... with the poppies in it
http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/vbc/onewish1/71200/
Oh onewish, I don't have that many poppies
yes I tend to overdue things... but the seeds were from the 1/2 price sale.... and the ones I don't like I won't keep... but there is a ton of space in this long bed (that I hate to work on because of the slope) I figure anything self seeding is good for here... there is a 5 foot gap between picture 2 & 3... there is nothing at all there.. (Randy was going to put steps up to the top so I don't have to struggle.. never got done).. I am tired of it looking ugly since it can be seen from the front of the house
Good morning! Cyndie, the box is on its way back home. Confirmation number is:
0307 1790 0004 2810 5052
BTW - you now have enough seeds to start a small truck farm! Enjoy!
I got the box today!
I want to thank everyone for their participation and their generosity. I hope you enjoyed it.
Seandor, I understand your remark. I think that the box just got bigger at every stop. I took some packets, but only made a miniscule dent.
I now have the seeds up for grabs. What you don't ask for will go to Lorraine to be gifted to Newbies.
Before I list what's left, either post here or dmail me that you are interested in receiving more seeds. Depending upon how many packets you are asking for, you can send a SASE or SASBE and I will return them.
Thanks again, Cyndie
Hi Cyndie - thanks so much for hosting this: it was a great idea & seemed to work well for everyone. I like the fact that I could take a small sampling, and not worry about having so much excess, that might go to waste. Spread the love - LOL!
yes thank you Cyndie!!!!
Katye and onewish1,
You are both very welcome!
Cyndie:
Having conducted a successful roundup, you are now entitled to the sobriquet of
"Head Seed Wrangler". Many thanks to you and the other generous ranch hands.
(I just sowed the first seeds yesterday!)
Great RoundUp, Cyndie! Thank you very much.
Don, Thanks for the new nickname and thanks for joining in. If you need more seeds, I have plenty here.....
Saanansandy, Thanks to you, too!
I will post a list of what is left for all of you to peruse one last time.
I will be looking forward to that listing!!
You truly have done an outstanding job with all of this!
Thanks, againg, for sure!!!
Thank you Cyndi your a great hostess
Thanks, everyone. It's great to be appreciated. If this is something we like to do, then we will create an annual Robin.
There are more than one packages of some and some have MANY seeds, so don't hesitate to ask for some thing that someone else already has asked for. There are more than enough to go around. I will mark the ones gone when they are asked for.
After you have decided, we will determine how to send them to you. I have a bunch of stamps and envies. If I need extra postage, I will let you know.
Cyndie

I've been following this thread from the beginning and it sounds like you all did great. I'll have to jump in next year. I only collected seed from a few things last year. That was a first for me. So we'll see how I do this year.
I have made notes for what I am sending to everyone from this list. Will be sending it out shortly.
Last Call before I give it all to Robin. Anyone else that has not responded?
Robin, I am assuming I should give it to you now since Lorraine is temporarily taking some time off?
Hi cyndie,
Did you need any bubble envies?
sue :-)
Thank You Cyndi, yes you can send them here. I am still on duty!!They will be put to good use.
Robin
Sue, Those eggplants and peppers look great! Mine are up too, and I am now starting tomatoes. Can't wait!
Robin, I will send them out to you. I was waiting for you to tell me when you were going to to stop by. LOL
I need to get rid of it otherwise I will start going through them again. ;)
I have been busy at work and have only had the weekends to get to the Post Office, so will do it next weekend.
I will be there by the end of the week. I can pick it up? It will most likely be on Thursday should I swing into work?
